To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL Becker, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in l)amper-Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to dampers and damper-operating means for use in cooking stoves or ranges, more particularly combined coal and gas ranges.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of means for controlling communication between a smoke-flue and an uptake, means for controlling comnuinication between an oven and the uptake, and means for operating the two first'named means in concert.
Another object is the provision of operating means detachable from the means for controlling communication between the smoke flue and the uptake, and adapted when so detached to be manipulated for the independent opening or closing of the means that controls connnunication between the oven and the uptake.
Other objects and advantageous characteristics of the invention will be fully under stood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connec tion with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figs. 3 and 41 are transverse vertical sections taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction 1 of the arrow, and showing the working parts in different positions. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrative of the capacity of function of my novel combination.

The damper 12 is provided at 17 with an apertured lug, Figs. 2 to 5. It will also be noticed that by comparison of Figs. 3 and 4 and 2 and 5, that the damper 10 is provided below the arm 1 1 with a vertical tapered projection 18.
Journaled in a bearing 18. fixed on the wall 5 is a revoluble and vertically movable shaft 19 which is also rcvoluble and vertically movable in an apertured stop 20. On the said shaft 11) are fixed a handle 21, an arm 22, a cam 23% and lugs 21 and 241; the lug 25 being designed to merely bring up against the before mentioned frame, which is numbered 30, and thereby limit the rota tion of the shaft in one direction. Depending from the cam 23, off the center of the shaft 1%) is a bar 213, and on said bar is an apertured lug 27 best shown in Figs. 3 and 4;.

It. will be noted here that in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the journal bearing 15 is carried by the frame 30.
The mode of operating the working parts and the advantages thereof will be fully understood from the following: \Vith the shaft 19 in its lower position and arranged l as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and by full lines in Fig. 1, the cam 23 will operate to hold the i damper 10 closed while the link 28 will hold 1 the damper 12 in position to leave the apertures (3 open. Because of this the flue 2 will be. closed to the uptake t while conn'nuni -ation is maintained through the apertures (i l l l l l l in vall 5 and the registered apertures in the damper '12 between the oven and the uptake -l-. From this it follows that when gas is used as a fuel, the products of combustion can freely pass from the oven to the uptake; also, that when coal is used as fuel and the oven becomes unduly heated, hot air, fumes etc, can be permitted to pass from the oven to the uptake. WVhen the shaft 19 is turned in the direction indicated by arrow in Fig. 1 3, the shaft arm 29 by cooperating with the l damper projection 1 1 will open the damper 10, and the link 28 will draw the damper 12 in the direction indicated by arrow'in Fig. 2. Following the said movement of the shaft 19 the damper will gravitate until its projection 15 brings up against the stop 16, at which time the damper 10 will rest immedi ately above the cam. 23, and the aperture 7 will be open and the apertures 6 closed. See Fig. 4. The positioning of the parts as shown in Fig. is advantageous at the startof a fire when coal is used as a fuel in order to heat the pipe and chimney and create a good draft. Then with this accomplished the damper 10 should be closed. It is not desirable, however, at such time to have the apertures 6 open. Therefore, after the shaft 19 is turned in the direction indicated by arrow in Fig. t to close the damper 10 by the cooperation of cam 28 with projection 18, the shaft 19 is raised as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5 and is then turned slightly about its axis in reverse direction and is then lowered to place its arm 22 in the full line position shown in Fig. 5, relative to the damper projection 1%. During the said turning of the shaft 19 in reverse direction, the damper 12 will be drawn toward the left to close the apertures 6. It will also be noted that when the shaft 19 is positioned as shown by full lines in F ig. 5, said shaft, by reason of its lug 25 bearing against the frame and its arm 22 resting back of the damper projection 14 will secure the damper in closed position. If it be desired while the damper 10 is in closed position, to move the damper 12 and open the vents or apertures 6, the same can be accomplished by raising shaft 19 to the dotted line position in Fig. 5 and then turning the shaft in the direction shown by arrow in said figure, after which the shaft 19 can be permitted to drop to its normal position with its arm in front of the damper projection 1 f.
It will'be gathered from the foregoing that in one position of the shaft 19 the opening of the damper 10 will be attended by the closing of the damper 12 and vice versa; and that in another position of said shaft 19 and following the closing of the damper 10, the damper 12 can be closed and opened at pleasure while the damper 10 remains in closed position.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1..The combination with a stove having an oven, a flue above the oven, an uptake back of the oven and flue, and apertures connecting the oven and flue with the uptake; of a vertically swinging damper pivoted at its lower edge in position to control the aperture between the flue and uptake and having an arm and a tapered projection, means for limiting the downward movement of the damper, a slidable damper arranged to control the aperture between the oven and the uptake, a vertically movable and revoluble shaft having an arm to cooperate with the damper arm and a cam to cooperate with the tapered projection on the damper and also having a bar or crank portion depending from the cam, means connecting the slidable damper with said depending bar or crank portion, and means for limiting the upward movement of the shaft.
2. The combination with a stove having an oven, a flue above the oven, an uptake back of the oven and flue, and apertures connecting the oven and flue with the uptake; of a vertically swinging damper for controlling the aperture between the flue and the uptake, a second damper for controlling the aperture between the oven and the uptake, and a shaft equipped with means for operating both dampers; said shaft being adjustable and constructed and arranged in one position to operate one damper independently of the other.
3. The combination with a stove having an oven, a flue above the even, an uptake back of the oven and flue, and apertures connecting the oven and flue with the uptake; of a damper for controlling the aperture between the flue and the uptake, a second damper for controlling the aperture between the oven and the uptake, and a common means. for operating said dampers.
4. The combination with a stove having an oven,'a flue, means for conducting products of combustion out of the stove, and apertures connecting the oven and flue with said conducting means, of a damper for con trolling the aperture between the flue and the conducting means, a second damper for controlling the aperture between the oven and the conducting means, and a common means for operating said dampers.
