PICTURE-EXHIBITION :DEVICEf Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2G, i914.,
Application filed December 6, 1912. Serial No. 735,248.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEBERT H. STRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Exhibition Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in picture exhibition devices in which a picpicture is mounted on a frame, which has mounted upon it a rod supporting a series of curtains closed over the picture by a spring wire device and cord, the curtains of which may be closed together or opened by the manipulation of a centrally connecting wire, an thus the picture may be suddenly revealed or suddenly concealed for the purpose o attracting attention.
IVith this object in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view and shows the curtain closed and picture concealed, Fig. 2- iis a front view and shows the curtains drawn apart, Fig. 3 is a rear View and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l.
The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the frame A on which is mounted the canvas or picture surface, B, having upon it the picture or other design, C. Mounted on the front of the frame A, is a curtain pole D supported by wire rods or pins Q, and upon the pole the rings, 3, 3, 3 etc., from which is suspended the curtain E and E2. Fastened to, or attached tocurtain E at m is the cord a: and to the curtain E2 at n the cord y. Through the frame A extend the openings a, b, c and d. The cord 3/ passes through the openings a and el, and the cord passes through the openings b and c. On the back of the frame A are mounted pulleys e, f, g and 71 also the pulleys z' and j. The
cord g/ after passing through the opening d, passes over the pulley f and down to and is connected with a spiral spring L, secured at its lower end to the frame, and passing through the opening c, it passes over the pulley g, thence over the pulley ,7' and down to the union of the cord y with a; at l. The cord m is attached at one end to the spring L', fastened at its lower end to the frame, and extends over the pulley it, through the opening Z) to the front of the frame and back through the opening c, thence over the pulley to the union Z with the cord y. From the union Z extends the single cord e over the pulley 76,' the cords and g/ drawing in opposite directions hold the curtains F/ and E2 together until drawn apart by pulling on the cord s. Then the cord a is released the curtains by means of the springs are drawn quickly together again. 'Ihus the figure upon the canvas beneath the curtains can be instantly disclosed and instantly again concealed. The picture may, for instance, be hung in a public place, the cord a being extended to some point where it can be easily reached by an attendant and manipulated, and the attention of the public drawn to the picture by the sudden movement of the curtain cords, causing the picture to suddenly burst upon their view.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
In a picture exhibition device a. picture frame, a curtain rod mounted near the top of said frame, a divided curtain slidably mounted on saidrod, cords attached to said curtain and extending at both ends to the back side of said frame, pulleys for said cords upon the back side of said frame, springs attached tothe frame and to one end of each cord and a cord attached to the other ends of both cords for operating the same and the curtain against the tension of said springs.
In testimony whereof I have aihxed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
SEBERT I'I. STRONG.
Witnesses:
S. A. VALENTINE, A. M. SNYDER.
