Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1 914.
Application filed August 15, 1910. Serial No. 577,132.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,.ED\VARD P. BRINKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have .invented a certain new an Improved lowing is a'specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an undergarment of the class known as union suits, of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, designed to be quickly and conveniently adjusted by-the wearer to position for stooling or urinating.
A further object of my invention is to provide an undergarment so deslgned that when in normal position the privates of the wearer will be completely covered and protected from the outer clothing, and further so designed and constructed as to receive all perspiration and other excretions from the of the wearer that ordinarily collect upon and soil the outer garments.
A further object of my invention is to provide an undergarment designed to allow the free and easy movement of the body in all ordinary directions without drawing or binding, and without danger of tearing or otherwise injuring the garment, and further to provide an undergarment that will not be stretched out of its normal shape by continued usage.
My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a rear elevation of an entire garment in closed position, embodying my invention, illustrating the construction of the fall member, the buttock members and the elastic band devices. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation of the same in closed position illustrating the improved suspensory pouch. Fig. 3 shows a rear elevation of the same in illustrating the V shaped opening and the fall member in open position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings. The body portion of the undergarment indicated by reference numeral 10, may be constructed of any desirable material. In the back of said body portion 1 have'provided an elastic band 11 to beinserted at or about the waist line of the wearers body and extending horizontally for a distance Undergarment, of which the folgenerally not quite half way around the body portion, to allow the free and easy movement of the body without drawing or binding, and without danger of tearing or otherwiseinjuring the garment. Just below said elastic band and having its narrow end extending downwardly to a point spaced apart a short distan'cefrom the crotch is a V shaped opening 12.
Positionedat either side of the V shaped opening, and designed to normally cover the side portions of the buttock are the buttock members 13, which may be manually spread apart to allow the buttock to conveniently protrude when the wearer is stooling.
Attached to the garment at the lower end of the V shaped opening, I have provided a fall member 14 designed to normally cover the V shaped opening, and also designed to overlap the edges of the buttock members 13. Said fall member is designed to be detachably connected at its upper corners by means'of buttons or other fasteners 15 to the elastic band 11. Any number of fasteners may be used between the said fasteners 15, if desired, but for convenience in the drawings I have shown only one which will ordinarily be sufficient.
The opening in the seat and the fall member are sufficiently narrow at their lower ends so that they are between those parts of the garment, which receive weight of the wearer when sitting so that the wearer does not sit on the lines of the opening or the edges of the fall member. The fall member i .secured near the crotch so that it may readily drop between the legs in front of the seat.
Extending horizontally across the lower part of the fall member is an elastic band 16 designed to give elasticity to the fall member to prevent tearing off the fasteners For the purpose of normally receiving and supporting the penis and testicles, I have provided a suspensory pouch ,19, said pouch being designed to be constructed of the same material as the body portion of the garment, and is woven into and made a part of the garment itself and designed to act as a suspensory.
In practical use it is obvious that when the garment is properly adjusted to the body the privates will be completely covered and protected from the outer garments, and that all perspiration, urine and other excretions from the body of the wearer that ordinarily collect upon and soil the outer garments will.
be received and retained by the undergarment, so that the same may be removed and cleansed; for the reason that there are no openings in the region of the privates through which the same may be exposed to the outer clothing, and for the further rea-.
son that the V shaped opening in the back will be completely and efiiciently covered by means of the fall member 14, said V shaped opening being designed to allow the buttock to protrude only when the buttock members 13 are drawn apart and when the fall member i in open position, as shown in Fig. 3. f
The elastic band 16 is designed to allow the free and easy movementof the body without danger of breaking the fasteners 15 or otherwise tearing or injuring the garment, and also to hold the'fall member firmly in position over the V shaped opening as shown in Fig. 1, and thus prevent said fall member from drawing together and becoming wedged in between the side portions of the buttock.
The elastic band 11 is designed to allow the free and easy movement of the body in any ordinary direction without danger of tearing or otherwise injuring the garment,
and is also designed to hold the buttock members 13 firmly in position and to prevent the garment from gaping and exposing the person to the outer garments.
The front of the garment is designed to open downwardly to a point indicated by the reference numeral 17 a short distance above the opening for the penis and to button in the usual way. The fore part of the garment below the point indicated by reference numeral 17 and also the crotch of the garment are designed to be entirely closed except the opening for the penis, 18. The obect of said construction is to provide a garment which may be q'uicklyand conveniently adjusted to the body and to prevent the privates from coming in contact with the outer clothing, and to keep said outer garments free from perspiration, urine and other excretions.
One of the advantages of my invention is lapping parts in the crotch or in the region of theprivates that ordinarily have a tendency to become torn, or to bind, or otherwise inconvenience the wearer.
I claim as my invention.
In a union undergarment of the class described, the combination of a body having arms and legs formed thereon, the front part of the body. portion, above the waist, being provided with a buttoned opening and a pocketportion below the waist and in line with the buttoned opening, the upper part of said pocket port-ion having an opening closed by the elasticity of the garment, the back .of said body portion being provided with a V shaped opening, the narrow end of I which extends almost to the center of the i rotch, and an elastic insert above said opening, a V shaped fall member having an elastic insert, secured to the back of said rment below said opening, on a single s ort horizontal line, and designed to cover said V shaped opening, and means for securing the wide end of said V shaped fall member i to the lower edge of the insert. portion of the back member.
