Be it known thot I, EDWARD ERICKSON,
2L citizen of the United States, residing in Beveriy, connty of Essex, and sachusetts, have invented en Improvment in Fastening Devices, of which the foiiowing description, in connection With the ne companying drawings, is a specificetion, iike letters on the drawings representing iike parts. This invention relates to a seprabie button or fustening device especiaiiy adapted among other uses to ioe empioyed on automobiles, motor-bOats and iike vehicles in connection with curtains, flops and iike coverings.
The invention ims for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient fastening device, witiiwhich tiie curtnin or other flexible device may be securei; fastened against accidentel disengagement, but which is capable of being readiiy disengnged from opposite sides of the curtnin or iike device, which nmkes the instcning device especmiiy apProprmte for use on motor and other boots provided with side cnrtains as 21 protection against the weather, as the danger of the occupants of the boat being unabie t0 unfasten the cnrtuins in case of accidents is 'avo-ided.

The femaie nn;n1ber is provided with an eiongated hoie 32 of a iength slightiy greater than the distance from the center portion 10 of the movabie section in its outward position and the rear waii of the post or stud, and less than th. iength or the head 0 of the post 01' stud, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3, so that when the femaie member is engaged With the maie n1ember as represented in Figs. 1 and 3, the projecting ends 20, 21 o:% the head of the post or stud overiap'the end wal]sof the sio 32 in the temale member and prevent the latter from being discngaged accidentaily by a direct movement of the femaie member on the post 01' stud toward the head tiwrcot. and thereby necessitating movement et the i'cmaie mcmber in the direction of its length and inward movement of the movabie section 01 the post or stud, in order t0 engage or disengage the emaie member With U]; from the maie member thereby effectively ]ocking the two memoers together against accidentai disengagement.
The femaie men1ber is engaged With the maie member in the following manner: One end oi the 1emaie member is passed over the projeeting end 21 of the head 0, and the temaie member is then moved longitudinaiiy toward the projecting end 20 in the direction indicated by the arrow 40, the femaie membcr being in an inciined position with relation to the base of the maie inembr after the znanner represented in Fig. 3

I have herein shown one embodiment et the invention, but I do not desire to limit the 'wention to the particuiar construction shown.
In Fig. 3, the spring 15 is represented as soidered to the movabie section of the post or stud, but such spring can be integral with Ii(i m vaoie section as represented in Fig. 4.
Claims:
1. In a fastening device of the charaeter de cribcd, in combination, a base, a hoilow post erected thereon and provided with a head esaended in opposite directions beyond said post to form projecting ends, one of which is uprvardiy inciined on its under sur face, said hoi]ow post having an opening in its side opposite the inciined projecting and a sliding post section comprising a curved central portion to project through the opening in the said post, and substantiaiiy straight sides extended into the hoiiow post tcsiide therein and guide'tixe s]iding post section, and a substantialiy U-shaped spring within the holiow post te force the shding post section ouiwardi} and to engage said base to iimit !hc ontward movement of said siiding post section, and a en1aie mendier having an. 'elongated siot of a iength less than the head of the post and coperating With tiie pr'ojetting ends et the latter to 'be retained on the post against removal by a direct pull or push, and eoperating *ith 1he incined under surface of one of said projecting ends to enabie the t'emale member to ne disengaged romthe outside of tize maie membenby a, pull exertcd against the said inelined surface or from the inside of the emale member by a push against the said inciined surface.
