VICTOR A. TREADWELL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SHIPS SWINGING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1%14.
Application filed July 1, 1913. Serial No. 776,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIoTon A. TREADWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ships Swinging Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provides an appliance particularly designed for sea-going vessels, whereby meals may be partaken of with comfort and without the inconvenience resulting from the rocking of the ship in rough water.
The invention consists of a platform suspended a short distance from the floor and adapted to receive and support the dining table and the chairs, benches or the like upon which the diners are seated when partaking of the meal.
The invention provides novel means for supporting the platform whereby the same may automatically move to compensate for the rocking of the ship and yet have the table remain comparatively horizontal and fixed with reference to the persons sitting therearound.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a table of the character stated, embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line w-w of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The invention embodies a platform 1, which is preferably of circular outline, although the configuration may vary depending upon the shape of the table to be supported thereon. The platform is suspended a short distance from the floor of the cabin or other part of the ship. The platform comprises a top and an under structure, the latter comprising radial and approximately transverse beams. The top of the platform may consist of flooring which is nailed to the structure in the usual way of securing flooring to sills or other supporting timbers. A center post 2 is connected at its lower end with the plat-form 1 at a central point and is connected at its upper end with the ceiling 3 of the cabin or other part of the ship by means of a loose joint 1, which will admit of the post swinging after the manner of a bob line. An overhead structure 5 is connected with the upper end of the post 2 and with the ceiling 3 and comprises a number of radially disposed bars and relatively transverse connecting bars. A number of posts 6 are vertically arranged and connect the outer portions of the platform 1 and overhead structure 5 so as to provide a substantial supporting frame or structure for the dining table and chairs or benches. A plurality of springs 7 of helical form and contractile type connect the outer part of the overhead structure 5 with the ceiling, such springs inclining outwardly and upwardly and being normally under tension so as to hold the overhead structure in a given position in a yielding manner. Other springs 8 of contractile and helical form connect the outer portion of the platform 1 with the floor 9, said springs inclining inwardly and downwardly. The springs 7 and 8 co-act to yieldingly hold the table suspending structure or frame in a given position against a too free movement so that no annoying movement will be experienced by the persons sitting upon the platform 1 about the table.
A table 10 of any construction is supported centrally upon the platform 1 with the post 2 passing therethrough. The table 10 is designed to receive the dishes and other accessories incident to a dining table. A small table 11 is mounted centrally upon the main table 10 and is adapted to turn about the post 2 and is intended to receive the articles of food, condiment holders and other articles for general use and service. The table 11 is adapted to be turned by hand so as to bring any article within convenient reach of the persons sitting at the table. Chairs, benches, or other supporting means, are placed upon the platform 1 about the table 10 for the persons to sit upon when partaking of a meal at the table.
It will be understood from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the invention provides means whereby persons may partake of a meal with comparative ease and comfort when at sea and the vessel is rolling in rough water, the structure being substantial and mounted in a manner to prevent any unpleasant movement being transmitted from the vessel to the persons sitting upon the platform about the table.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
The joint 4 may be of any type to admit of the structure swinging in every direction. It is preferred to have the joint of the universal type.
The small table 11 is supported by means of a collar 12 and braces 18. The collar 12 is slipped upon the post2 and is free to turn thereon and the braces 13 connect the Outer portion of the table with the collar.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the character specified, the combination of an overhead structure, a platform, a center and outer posts connecting the overhead structure and platform, the
center post being connected at its upper end with the ceiling by means of a universal j oint, oppositely inclined springs connecting the overhead structure with the ceiling and the platform with the floor, a table mounted upon the platform and having the center post passing centrally therethrough, and a self-waiting table mounted upon the dining table and rotatable about the center post,
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VICTOR A. TREADWELL.
