TOOL FOR JOINING METAL STRAP ENDS.
PPPP IGATION FILED SEPT 2 191 1,083,607. Patented Jan. 6, 1914. I s ssssssssssss a.
W mo %W//% bed-frame, and the handle of which may be of any desired length. An adjustable stopstud 38 is shown to project'from the rear face of the link to engage the stop 34 and limit the extent of raising the lever. A wooden stop-block 39 on. a" ledge 40 at the back of the bed-frame wall 10 and bolted to that wall, limits the extent of lowering the lever, which rests thereon when it has been operated to bring the jaw- lips 19 and 19 into meeting contact.
I strap-sections To operate the tool, with the lever raised, the mutually-overlappii'ig end-portions of a metal strap ll are introduced into the position represented in Fig. 6, to bear upon the elevated portions of the seat 24 and against the wedge-shaped ends of the stationary pins 20. .By thus lowering the handle end of the lever to turn the link 35 forwardly, the toggle 31 is straightened and thelink 28 is rocked forwardly to advance the head-block 25. In this advance, theadjacent edge of the work 41 is attacked at two points by the pins 21 and the pressure grips the opposite edges of the work at these and'the respectively opposite points between the opposing beveled ends of the crimping-pins, there curling the ed 'es into the grooves 23 and 23 outwardly (with relation to the face of the tool). Continued movement of the jaw 18 bends and cups the straps between their edge-portions into the seat-depressions, so that in the final part of the downward movement of the operating lever, which abuts the lips together, the crimping-pins force the outwardly-curled edge-portions of the straps toward each other, as represented in Fig. 7, and the parts cooperate to bulge the crirnped into the concavely-curved ends of the pins and produce the shape of the joints l2 illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, thereby firmly locking the straps one within the other. The opening through the tailpiece 30' being of elliptical shape the pivotpin 29 has play therein, and the rocking yoke-link 28 through the opening in which the said pin 29 also passes causes the head: block 25 carried by the tail-piece 30 to re ciprocate in a straight horizontal line and obviates all binding thereof in its guides.
The herein described construction of tool renders it very powerful for its purpose, which it accomplishes without requiring the application of great power to the operating lever and is therefore easy of operation.
What we claim as new and desire to se cure by-Letters Patent is 1. A tool for jointing metal strap-ends, having a bed-frame, a stationary jaw onthe bed of said frame, a head-block reciprocably supported on said bed and having a tailpiece, a jaw carried by the head-block, a seat for the work supported on the bed to extend between the jaws, a link-connecting the tail-piece with the frame, a toggle-lever pivotally connected at its forward end with said tail-piece and link and at its opposite end with said frame, a link connected at its lower end with thejoint between the togglemernbers, and an operating lever fulcrumed in hearings on said frame and connected with the opposite end of the last-named link.
2. A tool for joining metal strap-ends, having a bed-frame, a jaw stationarily supported on the bed of said frame and provided with .a lip, a head-block reciprocably supported on said bed and having a tailpiece, a jaw confined on the headblock to reciprocate with it and provided with a lip, crimping-pins projecting opposite each other from the j aw-faces, a seat for the work supported to extend beneath the opposing 1i as between the jaws, a link connecting said tailpiece with the frame, a toggle-lever piv- ,otally'connected at its forward end with said tail-piece and link and at its opposite end with said frame, a link connected at its lower end with the joint between the toggle-members, and an operating lever fulcrumed in hearings on said frame and connected with the opposite end of the last-named. link.
