To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Day ton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination locks, and relates specifically to certain improved fea tures of the lock shown and described in my pending application, Serial No. 626,543 filed May 11, 1.911.
The objects of the invention are, first, to provide an improved form of resetting means for the combination disks, which are returned to a normal position each time the lock is operated; secondly, to provide a simplified means for selecting the positions of the combination disks through the setting of which the device may be unlocked; and thirdly, to eliminate the use of springs to a great extent, and to improve the lock in various details as will appear in the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the lock with one of the cover plates removed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with some of the mechanism removed and other parts shown in section; Fig. 3 is a section through a portion of a door, and the lock on the line a-a of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line bb of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on the line c-c of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a section on the line aZ-(Z of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a detail view of the resetting mechanism; Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the setting gears; Figs. 9 and 10 are views of the bolts in difierent positions; and Fig. 11 is a section on the line ee of Fig. 3.
In a detail description of the mechanism similar reference characters designate the same parts in the description and drawings.
1 designates the portlon of a door provided with a pocket into which the lock casing is set, the same consisting of the rim portion 3, face plate 2, and side plates or covers 4 and 5, the latter being secured in position by screws 7 which pass through blocks 8 arranged at the corners of the casing. Mounted within the casing and adapted to be thrown through the bolt openings in the face plate 2, are a lower main bolt 9 and an auxiliary bolt 10, which are subject to operation substantially as described in my former application. The normal position of the main bolt 9 is its extended or looking position, as in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper bolt 10 may be moved to a locking or extended position whenever the main bolt is retracted and the combination has not been set. When the combination is set, the main bolt may be withdrawn without extending the upper or auxiliary bolt and thus the lock may be operated to permit of the opening of the door. The main bolt 9 is held in its extended position by a spring 11, which engages a pin 12 on the plate 5, and an extension 13 on the bolt. The said bolt 9 may be retracted at all times by turning the inside knob 14, without extending the upper bolt 10. The inside knob 14 is secured to the part 15 of the knob spindle, which extends through the door and the lock casing and is provided with a roll-back 16 lying within said casing. The roll-back 16 is adapted to engage extensions 13 on said bolt 9, see Figs. 2 and 6. The said bolt 9 may be retracted from the outside of the door by turning the outer knob 17 which is secured to the part 18 of the knob spindle. The spindle part 18 is provided with a roll-back 19 in engagement with a projection 20 on a slidable member 21, which straddles the spindle portion 18 and has a bearing in a cross piece 22 supported by the cover plates 4 and 5. The said cross piece 22 also forms a bearing for the inner end of the said main bolt 9. The
slidable member 21 is provided with a pin 23 which lies in an elongated recess 24 in said bolt 9, and forms the connection between said bolt 9 and said slidable member 21. When the said member 21 is actuated and the bolt 9 is retracted by turning the outer knob The lever 25 forming the main connecting elementbetween the two bolts 9 and 10, has an intermediate fulcrum on a pin 26. This intermediate pin or pivot 26 is on a slidable fulcrum plate 31 having bearings in a cross member 32 and a pin 33*, which parts are supported on the cover plates 4 and 5. The lower end of said lever 25 is pivoted to the slidable member 21 at 27,. while the upper end of said lever is slotted to receive a pin 28 on the upper bolt 10 which forms an upper pivot for said lever. The said bolt 10 is provided with an inclosed aperture 29 which receives a supporting pin 30 projecting from the cover plates 4 and 5.-
VVhen the combination of the lock is not set the operation of the main bolt 9, by turning the outer knob 17, will move the lever 25 onits intermediate fulcrum 26 and reverse the bolts, moving one or the other to the extended position. When the combination is set, however, and the said bolt 9 is operated from the knob 17, the said lever 25 will move on its upper fulcrum 28, and the fulcrum. plate 31. will be shifted the main bolt 9- will'be retracted without extending the upper bolt 10 and thus the door may be opened. The fulcrum plate 31 is held initsnormal position, or that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the combinationdisks3-3 which are provided with peripheral recesses 34 adapted to receive the adjacent end of said fulcrum plate 3 1. The number of disks 33 that may be used depends upon the number of units in the combination. In the present case there are two of such disks; attached to individual gears 35. The said disks 33 are attached to said gears by means of plates 36 and screws 37, which permits- .the said disks to be adjusted to vary the relation of the recesses 34 therein to their respective gears. When the said gears 35 are rotated to bring the recesses 34 opposite the plane of movement of the fulcrum plate 31 the lower or main bolt 9 may be retracted or withdrawn without extending the upper or auxiliary bolt 10. It will be understood that when in normal position, the recesses 34 are out of the plane of movement of the fulcrum plate 31. Their positions depend upon the combinationof numbers previously 1 selected.
The gears 35 are rotated by the following means. Mounted on a swinging frame 38 are pinions- 39 which are in mesh with the gear 35 and with idlers 40 also mounted on said frame; The idlers 40 are mesh with pinions 41mounted on telescopic shafts 42. The shafts 42 are journaled in the hub 43 of the frame 38, and extend out of the lock casing and door, and their outer ends are provided with thumb pieces 44. The teeth of the gears 39' are engaged by springs 45 mounted on the frame 38, and the ends of Which ride in 'and'out of the teeth of said gears. The extent of movement'to be imparted to the gears 35 may be easily ascerlunlock the door, the gears 35 are manipu-- lated to bring the recesses 34 in line with I the fulcrum plate 31. A turn of the outer knob 17 will retract the main bolt 9 without extending the upper bolt 10', the plate 31 moving into said recesses 34. When the said plate 31 rides into said recesses 34, and the lever 25- moves on its upper pivot 28-, the upper bolt 10' will be locked in its retracted position or that shown in Figs. 1 and 10 by a projection 46' on. the lever 25. The surface 47 of said projection 46- at such time engages the stop pin 33 and said lever 25' and projection 46* form a brace between the pins 33 and 28, thereby lockingv the upper bolt 10' in its retracted position. The pin 33 is supported by the cover plates 4 and 5-,
see Fig. 10. The gears 35 and the disks 33 p are returned to their normal positions upon each extended movement of the upper bolt jvided with a pinion 51; while the other gear 35 is mounted on a sleeve 52' also provided with. a pinion 51.- The pinions 51 are in. mesh with gears 53 jsournaledon a boss 54 on the hub .43 of the frame 38'.v Each of I the gears 53- isprovided with a plurality of pins 55,. the. number of which agrees with the ratio of the teeth of the gears 53- and pinions 51. The pins 55 are adapted to be engaged by hook like projections 56 which extend from the upper bolt 10. Then the said upper bolt 10 is extended, one of these projections 56 will engage one of the pins 55 on each of the gears 53-, and will rotate said gears a sufficient distance to move the: combination disks 33 to a normal position. The normal position of the combination disks 33 is that in which the pins 55 occupy the dot ted positions shown in Fig. 7.
To prevent the resetting of the gears 35 and disks 33 being obstructedwhile the thumb pieces 44 are being held, the gears 39' are thrown out of mesh with the gears 35 by the following. described means. As
1 before stated, the part 38 on which the gears 39 are mounted, is a swinging frame: This frame is engaged by the end 57 of a lever 53 pivoted on the pin 33".v As shown in :Frg. 1 the adjacent end of said frame has a notch which receives the: end 57'.
The lower end of said lever 58 is provided with a am slot 59, which receives a pin 60 carried: on the main bolt- 9. Whenthe main bolt 9' is retracted, the pin 60 will rock said lever 58, and thereby elevate the end 57 and disengage the gears 35 and 39. To prevent any friction between the combination disks 33 and the slidable fulcrum plate 31 retarding the resetting movement of said disks, the projection 46 of the lever 25 is adapted to engage the pin 33 to move said plate away from said disks, whenever the lever 25 is actuated on the pivot 26 by the bolt 9, to extend the upper bolt 10, as will be seen in Fig. 9.
In selecting a combination for the lock, the disks 33 are moved by the finger pieces 44 to an unlocking position, which we have seen is that in which the fulcrum plate 31 and the recesses 34 are in alinement. This position is ascertained by the finger catch 61, pivoted at 62 and extending through an opening in the frame 1. The said catch has a nose 63 which is adapted to rest in a recess 64 in each of the disks 33 when said recesses 34 are in line with the plate 31. The said catch 61 is slidably mounted on the pivot 62 and may engage either of the disks, see Fig. 5. After the position of the recesses 34 are thus ascertained, the disks 33 and gears 35 are disconnected by loosening the screws 37, access being had thereto through openings 44 in the cover plates 4 and 5, see Fig. 3. The gears may be then moved relatively to the disks by rotating the respective thumb pieces 44 the necessary extent in the same direction in which they are moved when the combination is being set. The combination being thus selected, the screws 37 are tightened and the disks made fast to the gears. The bolts 9 and 10 may then be operated to move the recesses 34 to their normal positions or out of the plane of the fulcrum plate 31. It will be understood that in this operation the overhanging ends 56 of the upper bolt 10 engages the adjacent pins 55 on the gears and both the gears and the disks are actuated.
To place the lock out of combination, after the door has been opened, one of the thumb pieces 44 may be rotated slightly to move one of the disks to a position to bring its recess 34 away from the end of the fulcrum plate 31. The main bolt 9 may be then actuated; owing to the fulcrum plate engaging the periphery of the other disk, the lever 25 will move on its intermediate pivot 26, and the upper bolt 10 will be extended. When said upper bolt is thus extended, the projections 56 of said bolt will rotate the gears 53 with the result that the disks 33 will be rotated to a normal position.
To maintain the lock in an unlocked condition so that the door may be opened at any time after the combination is set and without requiring a too frequent setting of the combination, and also to prevent the unlocking of the lock by persons possessing the combination at such times when said combination is not set, I provide the following means, shown in Fig. 11. Mounted on the inside of the door on the knob spindle 15, is a ratchet 65, adapted to be engaged by a pawl 66 pivoted at 67 to an inclosing plate 68. The pawl 66 is provided with a finger piece 69 accessible from the inside of the door. If the inside knob spindle 15 is slightly rotated and the pawl 66 is placed in engagement with the ratchet 65 on said spindle, the main bolt 9 will be slightly retarded, and will rock the lever 58, thereby actuating the pinion frame 38 to disengage the pinions 39 and gears 35. The combination gears cannot then be set and the lock, as a consequence, cannot be opened by a person possessing the combination.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction herein shown and described for certain changes and modificati ons may be made by one skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. In a lock; main and auxiliary bolts; a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable member providing an intermediate fulcrum for said lever; and means controlling the movement of said shiftable member.

a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable fulcrum member upon which said lever is pivoted; and means controlling the movement of said fulcrum member, to permit both bolts to be simultaneously thrown or only one of them.
3. In a lock; main and auxiliary bolts; a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; and means for locking the auxiliary bolt in its retracted position when the main bolt is actuated and said fulcrum member is shifted.
4. In a lock; a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt; a lever connected to said auxiliary bolt; a slidable member forming a connection between said lever and the main bolt; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; and means co6perating with said lever to lock the auxiliary bolt when the main bolt is actuated and said fulcrum member is shifted.
5. In a lock; a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt; a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; means arranged to engage said lever when the fulcrum member is shifted and to lock the auxiliary bolt when said main bolt is actuated.
6. In a lock; main and auxiliary bolts; a lever connecting said bolts, and adapted to reverse the position of said bolts from a movement of the main bolt, means coiiperating with the main bolt .to lock the auxiliary bolt when the main bolt is actuated; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; and means controlling the movement of said fulcrum member and determining the movements of said bolts.
7. In a lock; main and auxiliary bolts; a lever connecting said bolts, a shiftable ful crum member for said lever; combination setting devices controlling the movement of said fulcrum member; and means actuated by one of said bolts and adapted to return said setting devices to normal position during the movement of said bolt.

In a lock; a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt; a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; combination setting devices controlling the movement of said fulcrum member; and a resetting member mounted between said setting devices and adapted to be actuated by one of said bolts, whereby said setting devices are returned to a normal position When said bolt is actuated.
9. In a lock; a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt; alever connecting saidbolts; ashiftable fulcrum member for said lever; combination setting means controlling the movement of said fulcrum member; a gear having means thereon cooperating With one of said bolts and With said setting means to return said setting means to a normal position When said bolt is actuated.
10. In a lock; main and auxiliary bolts; a lever connecting said bolts; a shiftable fulcrum member for said lever; combination setting means controlling the position of said fulcrum member; means actuated by one of said bolts and adapted to return said combination setting means to normal position When said bolt is actuated; .and means adapted to release said fulcrum member from engagement With said combination setting means When said combination setting means is being returned to a normal position.

In a lock, combination-setting disks, means for rotating each of said disks independently, and a laterally shiftable member for holding said disks in an unlocking position When the rotating means are released therefrom, said laterally shiftable member being adapted to independently engage either disk.
