JOHN LUDVIG OHLSON, OF ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA.
ADJUSTABLE CONNECTING-ROD FOB, SEWING-MACHINES.
messes.
Application filed June '7, 1909.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Louvre OHLSON, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, residing at Rundle street, Adelaide, in the State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Connecting-Rods for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toan improved adjustable connecting rod for needle bar frames of sewing machines, and is applicable to that class of sewing machines wherein the needle bar is caused to swing back ward and forward in order to make stitches such as are used for button-hole work. For this purpose I construct an adjustable connecting rod which imparts motion from a rotary cam of well known device to the oscillating frame which carries the needle bar these latter elements being similar to those shown by my former application filed September 10, 1907, No. 392,234.
This connecting rod is characterized by a jointed portion which is operated by a lever and slide device, the constructional parts of which are devised and arranged so as to afford greater advantage and convenience in use.
I will now describe my invention by aid of the accompanying illustrative drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the connecting rod complete, Fig. 2 is a plan of same, and Fig. 3 is a repetition of Fig. 1, showing the connecting rod shortened by operation of the lever, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of cam end of connecting rod, and Fig. 5 is an end view of same. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a sewing machine equipped with applicants connecting rod.
In each of the illustrations similar letters of reference are used to denote similar or corresponding parts.
In the drawings a is the main portion of the connecting rod and is provided at one end with a hole or opening I) which is capable of being attached to an oscillating needle bar frame in the manner common to this class of machine. The opposite end terminates in a diagonal cut 0 and is provided with a lever (Z which is pivotally fastened to the main portion of the connecting rod a by means of a screw or bolt 6. This lever is formed with an extension or wheel f, through which the screw or bolt 9 passes and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
Serial No. 500,765.
forms the fulcrum or pivot upon which the heel f of the lever (Z operates.
The secondary portion of the connecting rod is shown at h and is provided with a hole j whereby it is fastened to the end of a cam wheel crank of the nature Well known in the class of machine indicated and from which oscillating motion is obtained. This portion of the rod is diagonally shouldered at 70 corresponding with the portion 0 of the connecting rod previously mentioned, a guide extension Z being formed by the end of the secondary portion.
A stop carrier m is formed above the rod and serves as a support for the stop plate a which is rendered horizontally adjustable by a slot and screw device 0.
Near the end of the guide extension a slot 7) is formed for the reception of a screw or stud g which passes through the slot and is securely fastened into the main portion of the connecting rod a.
For purposes of utility and by way of example let it be assumed that the motion of the cam transmitted to the oscillating needle bar by means of the connecting rod causes an oscillatory stitch of one-eighth of an inch in the length to be made as for instance in the formation of a button-hole.
The operation consists in lifting the needle without moving the work, and then tilting the lever as in Fig. 3, thus adjusting the position of the ensuing stitches. This movement for example may result in the dis placement of the needle one sixteenth of an inch. The right hand ends of the next stitch or stitches upon the already reversed cloth are thus adjusted to come into alinement with the center line of the row of stitches previously made, and from thence to the center line of a parallel line of a row of stitches which it is intended to make on the opposite side to complete the button-hole. After several stitches have been made with the lever in the position shown in Fig. 3 so as to form a bar (the Work being held stationary) the lever is set back again to the original position and the new row of stitches is worked, thus completing both sides and one end of the button-hole. The lever is again moved to the position shown in Fig. 3 and by this means a series of end stitches are inserted which form a bar and extend from the center line on one side of stitches to-the center line of the other set. Thus the construction of the connecting rod enables the bar to be made at the end of a buttonhole by allowing the needle to be thrown over after the last stitch in the row has been finished, and before the return stitch on the opposite side of the button-hole is commenced after the material has been turned end for end.
Various classes of fancy work requiring irregularly placed stitches can be evolved by the operation and adjustment of the lever. Having now fully described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which it is to be performed I declare that what I claim is:
1. A connecting rod for sewing machines comprising a main portion, a supplemental portion having a slotted end, a set screw adjustably connecting said slotted end to a part of the main portion between its ends, and an angle lever having its angle pivotally connected to the end of the main portion and one end pivotally connected to the supplemental portion, substantially. as described.
2. A connecting rod for sewing machines comprising a main portion, a supplemental portion having a slotted end, a set screw adjustably connecting said slotted end to a part of the main portion between its ends, and an angle lever having its angle pivotally connected to the end of the main portion and one end pivotally connected to the supplemental portion and a stop carried by the supplemental portion for limiting the movement of the parts when operated by the lever.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN LUDVIG OHLSON.
