1/ b all whom it may concern Be it known that we, DAVID JoNns, eng1- ncer, and HENRY F OLLAND, steel and galvanized-iron manufacturer, are subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing, respectively, at Oastell Grenig, Glana-mman, in the county of Carmarthen, South ales, and Brondeg, Glanamman aforesaid, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Apparatus for Galvanizing or Otherwise Coating Metallic Sheets with Metal, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to apparatus for galvanizing or otherwise coating metallic sheets with metal, and is illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows a side view of so much of a galvanizing apparatus as is necessary to illustrate the invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively plan view and side elevation of a detail part of the invention.
In the first place we have devised an improvement relating to the bottom rolls of such machines. We provide means for adjusting the top roll toward and away from the bottom roll so as to raise or lower the top roll according to the gages of the sheets or plates of metal being coated which is particularly useful when coating very thin sheets of metal. A convenient way of effecting this is to provide adjustable chocks or blocks a, for the top roll a, slidable in slots or ways 6 formed in the frame A of the machine. The axles of the top roll a. rest upon or are supported by the bent ends 0 of bolts (Z which pass through the chocks a the upper ends of the bolts being screw threaded and passing through a suitable supporting plate or plates f. The bent ends 0 are provided with liners 0 to prevent the ends from wearing and as the axles of the roller a wear, thicker liners or auxiliary liners are fitted to the bent ends 0. By means of nuts f on the screwed bolts the top roll can be raised and lowered as required. Screwed bolts 72. are provided to act as stops against the adjustable chocks a to limit the movement of the roll when adjustment has been effected. The chocks Z) for the bottom roll 6 are of the ordinary construction. By these means we effect the saving of a large percentage of Specification of Letters Patent.

wastage and the bushes on the necks or axles of the rolls are found to wear much longer. Further, as the rolls are separated to allow for the gage of the metal plate passing between them there is now no friction of one roll on the other and the sheets are not so liable to curl up and follow the top roll a. Following on the adjustment of the top roll a it is necessary to provide for the adjustment of the top guides j, for if the roll a be lowered a groove would be formed in the roll by the guides j. If the roll a be lifted a space would be left between the roll and the guides and a sheet would tend to curl up and follow the roll a. Thus the full benefit of the adjustability of the roll a would otherwise not be obtained. The front guides n are carried by the cross bar a which is secured by cotters a to projections a The lower guides t are similarly connected to a cross bar a and secured by cotters a to the projections a The lower guides t are carried by a cross bar a The top guides j are connected together by bars j and secured and adjusted vertically by means of the screwed cotter bolts 7.
The top rOll a may be used plain as in present machines but under our invention we prefer to provide it with concentric grooves '5 to accommodate the top guides j, or some of them, so that instead of the guides resting upon and wearing the roll they fit into these grooves and do away with the weekly adjustment required in machines at present in use. The grooves may be shallow in depth and the top guides be adjusted to rest in these shallow grooves or make their own grooves. Instead of using Vertical screw bolts in the frame of the machine we provide the frame with elongated slots 70 which enable us to use cotter bolt-s as shown in Fig. 1 by which considerable trouble is saved. lVe also provide adjustable bearings for the top rolls 4% of the machine. The improvement is not shown in Fig. 1 but is shown separately in Figs. 3 and 4. For this purpose we provide bearing plates n on which the necks of the rolls m rest, the bearing plates 11 being carried at each end by a frame or cradle a disposed in the side frame A. The bearing plates a and cradle 12 are lifted or otherwise adjusted when required by screwed stirrup bolts 0 whichfllje bent at theirlower ends to come beneath the cradles n. By actuating nuts p on these screwedbolts 0, as required the hearing plates can be adjusted to keep both rolls level, thus effecting a saving of waste of spelter and the even distribution of the same. The loaded levers g, which are used to keep the top rolls m in contact, we mount in slots 1" formed in the top gland s which rests upon the upper part of the necks of the rollers m.
e declare that what we claim is:
1. In apparatus for galvanizing or similarly coating metallic sheets, in combinationa frame, a pair of bottom rolls, bearing blocks for such rolls mounted in the frame, the blocks for the upper roll being adapted to slide vertically in the frame, adjustable stops to limit the upward movement of the bearing blocks for the top roll, bolts with bent ends to support the necks of the top roll, removable liners for the bent ends of the bolts, and means to adjust such bolts vertically to raise and lower verticallythe top roll to support the top roll and relieve the lower roll of its weight, and to vary itsposition relatively to the lower roll to permit varying thicknesses of plates to be fed between such rolls. c
2. In apparatus of the class described, in combination, upper and lower bottom rolls, the upper roll being provided with circumferential grooves, top and bottom guides associated with said r'olls", said top guides having portions engaging with said grooves in said upper roll and means for adjusting said top guides.
