Beit known that 1, WILL AM D. FonsY'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft gears for cars.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a draft gear, wherein the parts, consisting of a single device or several devices assembled into a single part, are so constructed that the several parts making up the draft gear may be assembled or separated as single parts; or as assembled parts; or as both kinds of parts, for the purposes of application, repair or removal from the cars on which they are used.
The invention consists in the separableassembled part draft gear hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the draft gear with all of the parts assembled, with the coupler head of the draw bar not shown Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, the parts shown in readiness to be assembled, with the exception of the spring case and spiral springs which are already assembled; Fig. 4 shows a side view of-the clevis pin; Fig. 5 is a cross section of Fig. 2 on section line 11.

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 is a spring case made preferably as a steel casting, having flanges 2, 2, which at the rear end of the case are extended longitudinally, said flanges extending entirely around the top and bottom said compartmentsB, 3, are provided with pairs of follower plates 5, 5, which are adapted to move in compartments 3, between the sides of spring case 1; the movements of said follower plates 5 are limited by the ends 6, 6, and abutment 7 of the spring case. 1.1 compartments 3 and mounted upon followerplates 5 are spiral springs b.

9 is a yoke bar having shoulders at 10 and 11 at its front end and shoulder 12 and a curve 12 at its rear end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which curve is insertible between the rear end of the spring case 1 and bars or rivets 4:, 4. When the yoke bars 9 are placed each side of the spring case,.they fall into a groove 13, formed by flanges 2, 2, of spring case 1, as shown in Fig. 5, and shoulders 10 of yoke bars 9 abut upon the front end of spring easel; shoulders 12 engage the rear end of said case, between the flanges 2, 2, thereof.
14 is a draw head, shown in the figures without the coupler end, and 15 is a hole made therein; Said draw head has shoulders at 16, 16, which are adapted to engage with shoulders 11, 11, of yoke bars 9, 9, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
17 is a rectangular link or clevis, the opening of which is of sufficient size to pass over the front ends of yoke bars 9, 9, after i the head of draw bar 14, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
18 is a pin which may be inserted in hole 15 of draw bar 14 and retained therein by suitable pins passed through holes 19.
All of the partsof the draft gear, including the spring case, the follower plates and spiral spring", the assembled unit hereinbefore described, are separate and distinct from each other, and when assembled in the draft gear, as shown in Fig. 1, are not permanently fastened to each other as by rivets or bolts or similar devices. The draft gear when thus. assembled may be attached to cars by placing the same between and supporting the same on the draft sills of said cars and fixin to said sills cleats against which the ends of the follower plates of the gear abut, so as to permit the car to be drawn over the railway on which it is' there provided with means of removably attaching yoke bars.

In a draft gear a sprlng case having compartments; and flanges extending from two parallel sides of said case, said flanges being extended at one end of said case and there provided with means of removably attaching yoke bars; follower plates adapted to move in 'said compartments and springs mounted on said plates.
4., In a draft gear a yoke bar having a shoulder at each end, one of said shoulders being extended intoa curved terminal.
5. In a draft gear a spring case having compartments; and flanges extending from two parallel sides'of said case, said flanges being extended at one end of said case and there provided with means of removably attaching yoke bars; two yoke bars each havi'ng a shoulder at each end, one of said shoulders having a curved terminal and means of removably fixing said yoke bars to said spring case.

Ina draft gear a sprin case having compartments; and flanges extending from two parallel sides of said case, said flanges being extended at one end of said case and there provided with means of removably attaching yoke bars; two yoke bars each hav-- ing a shoulder at each end, one of said shoulders having a curved terminal; means of removably fixing said yoke bars to said spring case; a draw bar having shoulders adapted to engage shoulders of said yoke bars, and means of maintaining said draw 'bar in engagement with said yoke bars.

In a draft gear a spring case having compartments; and flanges extending fI'OIII' two parallel sides of said case, said flanges being extended at one end of said case and there provided with means of re-movably attaching yoke bars; follower plates in said compartments and springs mount-ed thereon; two yoke bars each having a shoulder at each end, one of said shoulders having a curved terminal; means of removablyfixing said yoke bars to said spring case; a draw bar having shoulders adapted to engage shoulders of said yoke bars and means of maintaining said draw bar in engagement with said yoke bars.
8. In a draft gear a spring case having compartments; and flanges extending from two parallel sides of said case, said flanges being extended at one end of said case and there provided with means of removably attaching yoke bars; springs mounted in said compartments; two yoke bars each having a shoulder at each end, one of said shoulders havin a curved terminals means of removably xing said yoke bars to said spring case; a drawbar'having shoulders adapted to engage shoulders of said yoke bars and means of maintaining said draw bar in engagement with said yoke bars.
9. In a draft gear a spring case comprising a body with compartments therein and flanges extending beyond one end of the body of said case and there provided with means of removably' attaching oke bars.
