Letters Patent No. 108,330, dated October 18, 18,70.
IMPROVEMENT IN wRENcnEs.
vThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all einem may concern l'je il. known that li', JAMES F. CASS, of LOriginal, in the county o'f Ontario and Province of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenchesg and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to iml'n'ovements in socketwrenehes, and consists in combination with a piece of metal having a sockel-.ed end ol' one' or more sleeves, arranged in the socket the smaller within the larger, fer nuts ol'dilihrent sizes, so arranged that the smaller sleeves will be l'orced inward against spiral springs by the nuls, if too large for the said sleeves, but the smaller nntsl will ne received and acted on by the said smaller elect all as hereinafter described.
i: nre l is a sectional elevation of my improved wrench, and
Figure i an end view ol the same.
{lixniiar letters of rele-renee indicate eorl'espomling hollow steelt, having a shank, B, fitted for the argille tion nia lever or turning instrument like a any other suitable device by which it ned readily.
l nicl owing into the hollow end of the steelt, and having a socket, D, in itscen'cer, as
iargc as the largest nutwhich it is intended thev wrench shall be capable oi' turning, the said socket heilig minare, or ol' other iin-:n suited to the forni ol' the unis tor which it is designed.
l is a hollow sleeve fitted in the socket l) it has a Flange, lli, at the tcp, resting on the top of il, to "n: it from falling or being forced ont. i a spiral spring resting on the top of' flange F, :nid tte other end against the bottom of the socket nl fl ll is another slew-e similar to l, but smaller and werking within lil.' also provided with aspring, i, operaling in the saine manner that G does. As
l many more of' sncii sleeves may be employed as the nature of' the ease will admit.
li is :reordering-pin fitted within the smallest sleeve and a small socket, i), in stock A, at the bottom of a conical depression, 0,111 the end, and is designed for centering the nuts with the wrench by engaging the top of the. bolt, which projects above the nut when the wrench is to be applied. ...fr
In the application of the wrench this pin is rst placed on the bolt., as above indicated; pressure is then applied to the stock snlieiently to overcome the sprin gs, and it is turned so that the sides ci the sleeves are parallel with the sides of the nut; the latter-will then be forced Ainto thesleeve ot' the right capacity to receive it, forcing the others back, or if too large for any vof the sleeves, it will force them all back and be received in the Socket of C. The piece C is made separate from A and screwed into it for inserting the sleeves with the flanges at the top.
These sleeves may be made with thin walls, and4 graduated for nuts varying in size la any preferred measure.
lhe graduation may be extended by making the sleeves in two parts, theline ol division being through the corners diagonally, as indicated by the line x :e in iig. l. In this ease, one half the sleeve being forced back, would admita nut-between the other hall remaining down and two sides of' the next larger sleeve, but the centering-pin would have to be held at one side of the upper end of the bolt.
A smaller nutconld be turned by the wrench in this way than it' the whole of the sleeve be forced. back.
I propose to make these wrenches either with the sleeves made whole or divided, as above described.
'lhe sleeves may he used without the springs with goed results, the gravity being depended on tekeep them down, and l propose to make use of the spring or not, as may be preferred.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a socket-wrench, C A, of
Witnesses:
GEO. W. Manns, ALEX. F. Renners'.
