Specification of Letters Patent.
BROILER.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application iled December 11, 1912. Serial No. 736,166.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PRIME EDWARD GAN- NoN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Jerome, in the county of Yavapai and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a broiler adapted toV be positioned over one of the top openings in a coal stove when the lid isremoved, the primary object of the invention being to provide a casing having its lower end open for the admission ofthe heat and flames from the stove and having a hinged cover on its upper end adapted to be closed so as to prevent the smoke and ashes from passing out through the casing, and a holding device positioned within the casingV and adapted to be turned so as to expose both sides of the meat to be cooked to the fire.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simply constructed so as to render the same very cheap in manufacture and readily operated. A still further object of the invention is to provide a holding member of novel construction, which is peculiarly adapted for use in connection with the casing provided, and which is adapted to securely retain the article being cooked without danger of the same becoming detached from position during the movement of the turning device into either of its operative positions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel' features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
i In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a stove, showing the device in position thereupon; F ig. 2 is a side elevation of the broiler casing, showing its cover in closed position; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken through the broiler with the holding device in position; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the holding device.
In the drawings, 1 designates a hollow cylindrical casing having both ends open and adapted to be positioned upon the top of a coal or wood stove with its lower end in open communication with one of the stove openings, the said casing being constructed large enough in diameter so as to completely cover any of the stove openings. A circular cover 2 is hinged to the upper end of the casing 1 at 3 and is adapted to be secured in closed position by means of the spring clip 4, so as to prevent ashes and smoke from passing out from the stove through the casing when the device is in use. This cover is provided with a suitable manipulating ring 5 provided at its free edge. A circular opening 6 is provided in one side of the casing and is adapted to aline with the horizontally disposed slot 7 in the diametrically opposite side thereof, a vertically extending slot 8 being provided further in communication with one end of the slot 7.
A holding device 9, in which the meat to be cooked is to be placed, comprises coacting, circular members 10 and 11 constructed preferably of wire mesh. The member 10 is provided at one side with a lateral pivot pin 12 which is adapted to protrude through an eye 13 formed in an arm 14 extending at right angles to the plane of the member 11 and formed integrally therewith. The pin 12 is of such length that it may be inserted through the opening 6 in the casing for pivotal movement therein when the holding device is in position within the casing. At the diametrically opposite sides of both members 10 and 11, laterally extending attaching arms l5 are provided for the attachment of the respective portions 16 and 17 of a longitudinally-halved handle 18. Both of the members 10 and 1l are provided with peripheral teeth 19 and 20, respectively which are adapted to retain the meat in position within the space provided between the members 10 and l1 during movement of the device into either of its operative positions. When in position within the casing with its pivot pin 12 mounted rotatably within the opening 6, the arms 15 will eX- tend through the slot 7 and will rest upon the bottom wall 21 thereof with the handle 18 in exterior position. This handle 1S is to be constructed preferably of wood or some such material which will prevent the operators hands being burned when operating the holding device. The manipulating rings 5 provided on the cover 2 may likewise be constructed of heat insulating material, if it proves desirable to do so.
In using my improved boiler, the meat to be cooked is placed within the holding device and the device is then placed in operative position within the casing and the cover is closed. Then the lid is removed from one of the stove openings and the casing is slid into position over the same. This cover thus prevents smoke and ashes from rising through the casing, and further means is provided to prevent the smoke from passing through the slots 7 and 8. This means comprises a depending closure plate 22 provided on the side of the cover adjacent thel handle of the holding device and which is provided at its lower edge with a notch 23 for the receptio-n of the attaching arms 15 when in operative position. This closure plate 22 is adapted to fit snugly against the outside of the casing so as to effectively close the said slots to the greatest extent possible.
Then it is desired to turn the meat over, so as to expose its uncooked side to the flames, the cover is lifted quickly and the handle is operated so as to reverse the position of the members 10 and 1l, when the cover is clo-sed as before.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen th at I have provided a simply constructed broiler which may be cheaply manufactured and will be very durable and eiiicient in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A broiler comprising a casing adapted to be positioned above a stove opening and having its top and bottom open for communication therewith, a hinged closure for the top of said casing, the said casing being provided with a pivot opening in one side thereof and a bayonet slot in the other side, opening through the upper edge thereof, a holding device adapted to be positioned within the casing and including fiat companion members, a projection formed at the edge of one Lof said members at right angles thereto and forming an eye, a lateral pivot pin provided on the other member and adapted to extend through the said eye and to be mounted rotatably within the pivot opening in the casing, companion arms formed on the said holding members at the edges thereof opposite to the pivot pin and eye, the said arms being adapted to extend through the bayonet slot in the casing and to be disposed within the horizontal portion thereof when the holding device is in operative position, and handle sections carried by the said arms.
2. A broiler comprising a casing adapted t-o be positioned above a stove opening and having its top and bottom open for communication therewith, a hinged closure for the top of said casing, the said casing being provided with a pivot opening in one side thereof and abayonet slot in the other side, opening through the upper edge thereof, a holding device adapted to be positioned within the casing and including flat companion members, a projection formed at the edge of one of said members at right angles thereto and forming an eye, a lateral pivot pin provided on the other member and adapted to extend through the said eye and to be mounted rotatably within the pivot opening in the casing, companion arms formed on the said holding members at the edges thereof opposite to the pivot pin and eye, the said arms being adapted to extend through the bayonet slot in the casing and to be disposed wit-hin the horizontal portion thereof when the holding device is in operative position, handle sections carried by the said arms, and a closure for said bayonet slot having a notch therein for the reception of the said arms.
3. A broiler comprising a casing adapted to be positioned above a stove opening and having its top and bottom open for communication therewith, a hinged closure for the top of said casing, the said casing being provided with a pivot opening in one side thereof and a bayonet slot in the other side, opening through the upper edge thereof, a holding device adapted to be positioned within the casing and including flatV companion members, a projection formed at the edge of one of said members at right angles thereto and forming an eye, a lateral pivot pin provided on the other member and adapted to extend through the said eye and to be mounted rotatably within the pivot opening in the casing, companion arms formed on the said holding members at the edges thereof opposite to the pivot pin and eye, the said Varms being adapted to extend through the bayonet slot in the casing and to be disposed within the horizontal portion thereof when the holding device is in operative position, handle sections vcarried by the said arms, anda closure plate depending from the said cover and adapted to extend over the said bayonet slot, the said plate being provided with a notch in the lower end of the same for the reception of the arms of the holding device members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
