To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J 08am! 0. RICHARD, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hammond, in the county 'of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Smoke-Consumer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention-relates generally to smoke consumers, and more particularly to a device of this class in which boiler pressure is utilized. j
The principal object of'the invention is the provision oiasmoke consumer especially adapted for use on locomotives, whereby the boiler pressure is utilized to provide a draft in order to carry back the products of combustion into-the fire box after such products h ve been mixed with a desirable quantity 0 air.
The invention also comprehendsnew and improved details of construction which will oft e invention are set forth, the-novelty and utility a parent in the invention beireig included wit the scope of the append claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a locomotive boiler with the smoke consumer cooperating therewith; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the adjustable device for obtaining a reduction of pressure within the passageway communicating with the smoke box or chamber; Fig. 3 is aseetional view on the line 33 of Fig.2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line .44 of Fig. 2.
Insetting forth the construction and operation of the improved smoke consumer, any
suitable boiler 1, such as that of a locomotive, has been chosen, the invention comprehending an adjustable device 2 communicating with the interior of the boiler through any suitable pipe 3 and steam chamber 4 controlled by a valve 5, it being noted that the smoke box or chamber 6 of the boiler communicates with the fire box 7 through a passageway 80, said device 2 communicating with the said passageway.
The device shown particularly in Fig. 2, Which I term an injector, comprises preferbe apparent as the description andoperation ably a cylindrical body member 8, having its opposite ends interiorly threaded as at 9 and adapted to receive the threaded exterior of pipes or other connections 1011, it be ing noted that when the parts are brought together an annular chamber 12 is provided in the interior of the body member 8, the in terior diameter bein greater than the diameters of the threaded ortions 9 in order to bring about'such annu ar construction. One side of the body member 8 is provided with an inlet 13 having suitable threads 14 whereby the injector may be connected to the pi e 3 which communicates with the steam. t will be particularly noted that thethreads on-the exterior of the pipes or similar elements 10-41 are remote from the adjacent ends of these pipes or elements, and that the end of the pipe 10 is beveled, as at 15, on its outer side, while the end of the pipe or other element 11 is similarly beveled, asat 16, on its inner side; the eflect of such construct-ion is that the pipes 10-11 may be moved relatively to each other from a position where they closely engage to such a position as, for instance, that shown in Fi 2, whereby an annular orifice is provided variable in its extent, thereby providin for admission of steam from the annular c luamber 12 in varying quantities, depending on conditions and the boiler with which the injector is used. The pi e 10 is held in position relatively to the b0 y member 8 in any suitable manner, as by means of a lock nut 17, the other pipe 11 being secured in similar position preferably by means of a lock nut 18.
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 4 it will be noted that the pipe 11 is provided with a plurality of openings 19. It will also be noted that a sleeve 20 is positioned on the pipe 11, the sleeve being provided with a slot 21 and the pipe being provided with a set screw 22 engaging in the slot, whereby the relative positions of the two parts may be retained. Loosening the set screw 22 permits the sleeve 20 to be moved longitudinally of the pipe 11 by reason of the slot 21, the length of the slot being such that the moving of the sleeve along the pipe will uncover the openings 19 in a greater or less degree, thereby permitting access of air to the said pipe 11. The said pipe 10 communicates with the pipe or passageway 8 leading from the smoke chamber or box 6,
-while the said pipe 11 communicates with the fire box 7 through suitable openings or 'ing equivalent construction 23, as shown particularly in Fig. 1.
It will be clear now that when the boiler is working, opening the valve 5 in varying amounts will permit steam to enter the pipe 3, the injector 2 and the pipe 11, passing into the fire box 7 by reason of the openings 23; the beveled surfaces or ends 15-16 of the pipes 10-11 determines the direction of flow of the steam, such flow taking place because of the difference in pressure between the interior of the boiler and the fire box. The flow of steam through the pipe 11 brings about a result similar to that of the injector, which result is a lowering of pressure within the pipe 10, whereby the reduc tion of pressure in said pipe and in the smoke box which communicates therewith will tend to bring the products of combustion into the pipes 10-11, mixing with a certain amount of air through the openings 19, such products together with the air passon to the fire box 7 where they are consumed. It is to be particularly noted that while the direction of extent of the beveled portions 15-16 of the pipes determines the direction of flow of steam after leaving the chamber 12,, such direction of the beveled surfaces tends to avoid checking the solid particles present in the smoke, thereby avoiding clogging and choking of the chamber 12 and the inlet 13. v
It is, of course, clear that the invention may be applied to boilers other than those of locomotives, and that the invention 1s capable of wide variation in details of construction and arrangement of parts without avoiding the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of two pipes having their ends beveled, one on the inside and the other on the outside, the pipes extending one into the other to form an annular orifice, each of the pipes being externally threaded adjacent to their beveled ends and one of them provided with openings, a slotted sleeve slidable on the pipe provided with the openings and adapted to open or close said openings, a set screw passing through the slot of the sleeve and screwing into the pipe, a cylindrical open-ended body having its ends internally threaded and screwing on the threaded portions of said pipes, said body having on its inner face intermediate 0 its ends an annular groove forming with the said pipes an annular chamber and pro-- vided with a lateral inlet leading from said chamber, and lock nuts screwing on .the pipes and engaging the ends of the said body. In a device of the character described, the combination oftwo pipeshaving their ends beveled one on the outside and the other on the inside, said pipes extending one into the other to form an annular orifice, each pipe being externally screw threaded adjacent to their beveled ends, means for cont-rolling the admission of air to the pipe having its end beveled on the inside, a cylindrical open endedbody having its ends internally threaded and screwing on the threaded portions of the said pipes, said body having on its inner face intermediate of its ends an annular groove forming with said pipes an annular chamber and provided with a lateral inlet leading from said chamber, and lock nuts screwing on 'thepipes and engaging the ends of the said body. t
