or'ro WIEDEKE, on DAYTON, 01110, assrelvon or ONE-HALF T0 GUSTAV WIEDEKE, or DAYTON, OHIO.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, om Wmonxn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented: certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Cutters; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tube cutters. One object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which is simple in construction and efficient in operation and which provides means for effectually holding the cutting tool in a proper position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an indicator for ascertaining the position of cutting tool. And still another object of the invention is toprovide means for distributing the strains imparted to the tool during the cutting operation, thereby preventing the tool becoming easily broken. Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved tube cutter; Fig.
2 is a section on the line aa of Fig. 1; Fig.
3 is a section on the line b-b of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line cc of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutter; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cutter carrying shaft.
Referring moreparticularlyto the drawings, 1 represents a cylindrical body or shank provided with a head or integral collar 2 and a square extension 3 adapted to receive suitable means for rotating the body and the parts carried thereby. The body 1 is provided with an eccentrically disposed bore 5 which is designed to receive a tool holder or shaft 4- The said shaft 4 is provided with an opening 13 which receives a cutter consisting of a body 6 one side of which is fiat, as at 8, and an end of which terminates in abit 6 The said cutter is held within the opening 13 by a screw 7 which engages the flat surface 8 thereof.
The flat side of said cutter lies parallel with the bit or cutting end 6% It will be seen, that, by this arrangement, the cutter will be moved to a position withthe bit 6 at a Specification of Letters Patent.

right angle to the axis of the shaft 4 when the screw 7 is tightened against said cutter. The cutter extends out of a lateral opening 9 inthe side of the body 1 and may engage the inner surface of the tube within which the implement is inserted. The extent to which the implement is inserted in the tube, and the position of the cutter 6 relative to the end of the tube, is regulated by the head or collar 2 which lies on the outside of the tube and engages the extreme end thereof. As the cutter 6 is mounted on the shaft :1 which is, in turn, eccentrically mounted in the body 1, the bit 6 will have a radial, or an outward movement in the opening 9. As a consequence, when the implement is placed within a tube and is then rotated, the cutting end or hit 6 will initially pierce the tube and will then cut the same during the continued rotation of the implement. The flat surface 8 of the cutter is adapted to engage the straight side 10 of the slot 9 which is instrumental in holding the cutter 6 in a true cutting position at a right angle to the axis ofthe tube. The shaft 4 extends into the head 2 where it is provided with an opening 14, which receives a pin 12. The pin 12 extends out of the head through an opening 11, and forms an indicator to enable the operator to ascertain the position of the cutter 6 when the implement lies within the tube. When the bit 6 has pierced the tube, the shank has rotated relatively to the shaft 4 an extent sufficient to bring the body 6 of the cutter in engagement with the end 9" of the opening 9, and, during the subsequent movement of the shank, at which time the tube is out, the strain imparted to the bit during the cutting operation will be carried by the shank. However, as the shank is weakest at the opening 9 the following means is provided to transfer a portion of the strain to the head of the tool: Mounted in the head 2 and in alinement with the opening 11 is a screw 15 adapted to be engaged by the pin 12 when the body 6 of the cutter is in engagement with the end 9" of the slot. At the time the tool is assembled, the screw 15 is adjusted to its proper position and the head thereof is subsequently ground off which prevents unauthorized persons tampering with the adjustment. It will be seen that, by thus constructing the tool, part of the strain, consequent to the cutting operation, will be carried by the thick collar 2 of the cylindrical body or shank 1, While the remainder will be carried by the head 2 through the shaft 4 and pin 12.
Having described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the type specified, a body member having an eccentrically longitudinally disposed opening and a lateral slot, a head provided with a lateral slot mounted on said body and into which said eccentrically disposed opening extends, a shaft mounted in said opening, a cutter mounted in said shaft and extending out of the slot.
in said body, said cutter being adapted to engage the end of theslot in the body, a pin 15 mounted in said shaft and extending out of the slot in the head, and a member capable of beingadjusted mounted in said head and adapted to engage said pin.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses/ OTTO WIEDEKE.
