U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHESLEY DOM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SAMUEL G. TATUM COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BOOKBINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1913.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Serial No. 753,286. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IESLEY DOM, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an interchangeable pamphlet or book-holder, for telephone books, catalogues and the like.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, cheap and easily operated, interchangeable book-holder, which will securely and yet interchangeably hold the book in a stiff binder without injuring the book or in terfering with the convenience of usage.
The features of invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the booloholder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 50, 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the applied book-holder.
- In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, my device comprises a base 1, such as a longitudinal strip of wood or other suitable material, forming a support for the book binding edge.
2 represent the covers hinged to the base 1 by means of the flexible covering 3. At one end of the binder formed by these elements (2'. c. the lower end of Fig. 1) is a. longitudinal strip of metal 4, secured on the inner face of the base 1 6. between the binder covers 2 when closed). Preferably this strip has the curved and medial flat surfaces illustrated in cross section, Fig. 3, the curved por tions constituting longitudinal reinforcement. The lower end of strip 4 is turned up to form the flange 5 forming an end abutmentt'or the book held within the binder.
6 is a flexible, say wire hook, secured to the base 1, and overhanging flange 5, to be inserted between the open pages of the book or pamphlet 10, as shown in Fig. 4. V
7 represents the rivets passing through the base 1 and the flat, medial portion of the strip 4, the holder element for this end of the book being fixed relative to the binder. The holding element for the other end of the book comprises the metal strip 4 corresponding structurally to strip 4, but formed with the medial longitudinal slot 8, the outer end of strip 4 being turned up to form the end flange 5, the hook 6 being fixed to strip .4, and overhanging flange 5, in correspondence to the relative structural arrangement of the first described holder element.
9 is a flat strip of metal, slightly bowed longitudinally to constitute a spring tension member, secured over strip 4, by means of rivets or screws 11, passing through slot 8, and thus securing these elements to the base, enabling the longitudinal adjustment of the upper holding element, under sufficient tension to frictionally retain a set position.
In operation, the movable holder element is extended the book opened up and placed between the binder covers, as shown in Fig. 4, hook 6 engaging between the open sheets, thus gripping one end of the book, the hook 6 is then closed in to grip the other end of the book between the open pages. The book or pamphlet of flexible cover style, is thus incorporated between st-ifi covers, so that it may be handled as a unitary structure.
The book will be preserved from injury, can be conveniently handled, and the binder is readily interchangeable.
Various modifications can be made by the skilled mechanic in view of'this disclosure of the preferred embodiment of my in vention.
Having described my invention, I claim 2- In a book-holder, a base, a book gripping element comprising a strip of metal secured thereto at one end, and formed with an end flange, for engaging one end of the book, and with a hook overhanging the flange for engaging between pages of the book, a second corresponding lock gripping element, formed with a medial longitudinal slot, and a friction member securing the second gripping element longitudinally adjust-- ably to the other end of the base.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
CHESLEY DOM.
WVitnesses OLIVER B. KAISER, CLARENCE B. Fosrnn.
