RAILWAY-TIE,
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application filed October 11, 1913. Serial N o. 794,625.
To aZZfw/Lom t may concern.' y
Be it known that I, ANTHIME BERNIER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in t-he county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-- Ties, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same. A
This invention relates torailway ties, and the object thereof is to-provide an improved composition device of this class employing both wood and metal a further object being toprovide a railway tie which will possess all the necessary strength, and at the same time be economical in construction and use; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a railway tie constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
-The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification Yof which the accom.-
panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters 1n 'cach of the views,'iand in which- Figure l a plan view showing two of my improved railway ties and rails mounted thereon; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of lfig. l, and, Fig. 3 asection on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
My impr vcd railway tie is made entirely of metal except parts thereof on which the rails are placed, and said tie comprises a central longitudinal vertical web portion a 'having base flanges and a horizontal top plate o3 forming top side flanges a* similar 'to the base flanges a2 betweenthe end portions of: the rail. The end portions of the -rail at the top thereof are provided with oblong heads l; having deep and Wide longitudinal recesses b2 in which are placed blocks c of wood or other suitable fibrous material, and the sides of the blocks c which may be slipped into the recesses 722 are inclined upvardly and inwardly, as shown at 02, and the il ner walls of the sides of the heads are similarly formed, and this aids in holding tht blocks c in the heads fb of the ties. The blot ks c are also secured in the recesses ZF by bolt.' l which are passed upwardly through the lottoms of the' heads Z9 and through said blocks and provided With nuts de, or said bolts may be passed downwardly through blocks c extend above the'heads Z) or the sides thereof and form fibrous cushions for the rails f, and said rails are secured to said blocks by spikes g which are driven downwardly into said blocks in the usual manner, and the heads of which overlap the base flanges of the rail. The webs of the ties are also preferably strengthened -beneath the heads b by webs or ribs t, and the central web portion of the ties may be similarly braced if desired.
The main part of the tie, or the'rnetal parts thereof, may be formed in any desired manner, and may consist of separate parts secured together if desired, and in this way I provide a railway tie possessing the greatest possible strength and also involving wood or fibrous portions which support the rails and to which the rails are secured, and by means of the particular form ofthe tie in cross section, the greatest possible strength is producedA in, proportion to the amount or weightof the material employed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-y ters Patent is A railway tie comprising a central longitudinal web portion having base flanges, and a top plate forming corresponding top flanges, the ends of the tie being provided at the top thereof with longitudinal heads in which are formed longitudinal recesses which open outwardly .through the ends of the' tie, and in which are secured blocks of wood on which the rails are placed, the sides of said heads being lower than said blocks of wood, when the latter are secured in position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention-I have signed my naine in presence of the subscribing witnessesA this l,tth day of October', 1913.`
