Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 38, 1.913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil-Forming Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to molds or forms used in the manufacture of coils for electrical machines, and it has for its object to provide a mold or form with a movable side iember which may be readily adjusted to any'desired degree for the purpose of adapting the mold to any size of coil or wire.
It has heretofore been a more or less common practice to employ molds having movable side members for the purpose of adapting them to wire or coils of difi'erent dimensions, but, in such cases, the means employed for adjustin the movable members have been of such ciaracter that exact adjustment to absolutely fixed positions and with very fine graduations of movement have not been possible, whereas, by the use of my invention a considerable range of movement of the adjustable member is possible, and it is also feasible to adjust the member the smallest degree that can, under any circumstances, be desired, and, when so adjusted, whatever may be the degree of ad justment, the member is automatically locked against movement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mold embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showin the mold at a difierent angle and with the adjustable member removed, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the frame upon which the adjustable member and the adjusting mechanism are mounted.
The mold 1 may be of such form and dimensions as may be required to enable the user to wind thereon a coil which shall have the desired size and shape, but, whatever may be such form and dimensions, the portions of the space in which the sides of the coil are formed will be of adjustable width, the shoulder at one side of one of said portions being shown at 2.
Adjacent to the shoulder 2, the mold is provided with a recess in which is seated a metal frame 3 of trough or channel shape in cross section having laterally projecting flanges 4 and 5, at its outer edges, and being provided, adjacent to its ends, with bolts 0r studs 6 which project outwardly beyond the flanges. Seated in the channel 7 of the frame 3 are two nuts 8 and 9 provided with screw threads of opposite pitch which engage a screw threaded shaft 10 the opposite ends of which have screw threads of opposite pitch to accommodate them to the nuts and the middle portion of which is provided with a worm wheel 11.
Mounted in bearings adjacent to the middle portion of the shaft 10 is an operating shaft 12 having a worm 13 in position to engage the worm wheel 11 and provided, at its outer end, with a knob 1 1 by means of which the shaft may be operated.
Located in a recess in the flange 4 of the frame 3 and fastened therein by screws 16, is a plate 15 having a bearing for the shaft 12, and movably mounted on the flanges 4L and 5 is a block 17 having two laterally extending slots 18 through which the studs or bolts 6 project, washers 19 and nuts 20 being mounted on the outer ends of said studs or bolts in order to hold the block in position. The block 17 is also provided with two oppositely inclined slots 21 and 22 to receive studs 23 and 2 1 with which the nuts 8 and 9 are provided. The block 17 is also provided with a transverse slot 25 for the shaft 12, in order that the block may move latorally.
It will be readily seen that when the shaft 12 is turned in one direction the screw shaft 10 will be rotated, through the action of the worm 13 and the worm wheel 11, and will thus draw the nuts 8 and 9 toward each other, thereby causing the studs 23 and 24 to operate in the inclined slots and force the block away from the shoulder 2 of the mold. If the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction, the nuts will be forced away from each other and the action of the studs in the inclined slots will be such as to move the block toward the shoulder 2.
It will be readily understood that any rotative movement of the shaft 12 will effect a very much smaller degree of movement of the block by reason of the worm and screw gearing and that, however large or small the degree of movement, the block will be rigidly locked and thus prevented from yielding or moving in any degree unless and until the shaft 12 is moved by means of the knob 14.
Changes in structural details which do not produce material changes in mode, of. operation. or result are to) be understood? as within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a coil-forming mold having a shoulder, the combination of a block located adjacent to the said shoulder and provided double screw shaft provided with a worm wheel, nuts mountedi 011 said screw shaft and having studs that project intosaid inclined: slots and an operating shaft having a worm that meshes with said worm/ wh'eel 2. Ina coil-forming moldhaving a shoulder, the combination with av block located adjacent to; saidshoulder and provided with a pair of reversely inclined slots, of a doublesorew shaft having a worm wheel nuts for said screw shaft having studs that project into said slots, a worm for. operating said worm: wheel, and means for holding said block to its, seat;
3. Ina eoila-for-minglmold having a shoulder, the combination with a block having a its seat.
4:. In a coil formi'ng moldhaving a shoulider, the combination with a laterally movable block adjacent to said shoulder, of worm and screw. mechanism for moving saidblock toward and away from said shoulder.
