To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Press, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a device for simultaneously applying pressure in a plurality of directions. I
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device which may be used for simultaneously gripping or pressing articles of quadrilateral cross sections, on all four sides; tor simultaneously gripping articles of circular or other cross section at four points; or which may be employed for pressing and molding plastic material by pressures which are approximately equal in all directions. A further object is to provide four jaws or members, so mounted that they are caused to simultaneously open or close, according to the direction of movement, in such manner'that a true rectangular opening of increasing or diminishing size is insured at all times. A further object is to provide means by which the parts may be adjusted, to provide an opening of true square cross section, or of oblong section as may be desired. A further object is to provide jaws so mounted that they will normally move in unison, and means whereby one side of the opening may be temporarily displaced, to permit insertion and removal of the article being operated upon. A further object is to provide a device for pressing the slot portion or cell of armature, stator and rotor coils for electric motors and generators, which will be adjustable to a large variety of shapes, sizes and lengths of coils, and which will simultaneously close up equally on all four sides of the coil, thereby avoiding open corners capable of catching loose wires or insulation;
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating an apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof. Figure 3 is a longitudinal cross section view. Figure l 1s a rear view. Flgures 5 and 6 are diagrammatic views illustrating the operation. which may be locked in any adjusted posi tion by a suitable lock nut, as shown.
Resting upon the top of the body 10, and engaging the guides 12, is a carrier 17,'provided with inclined guides 18, arranged at an angle of forty-five degrees with respect to the guides 12, having their lower ends arranged opposite to portions of thevstationary member 13. Adjustably mounted uponthe guides 18, is a casing 19, which is adjusted by means of screws 20, mounted in thetop of the carrier 17, and operated simultaneously by means of a hand wheel 21, through the medium of a cross shaft 22 and beveled gears 23. A suitable clamp C may be employed to normally prevent rotation of said hand wheel. Slidably mounted inthe casing 19 is a movable member-24, thelower end of which is normally pressed into abutting contact with the stationary member 13, by means of springs 25 encircling guide rods 26, and interposed between the upper end of the jaw and the top wall of the carrier17. ber 24: is limited by stops 27, carried by the projecting ends of the guide rods 26, positioned to contact with the top wall of the carrier 17.
Downward movement of said mem- The carrier 17 may be shifted along the guides 12 in any suitable manner, such as by compressed air, steam, hydraulic, hand, or other power. In the drawing, for illustrative purposes, an actuating screw shaft 28 is shown as mounted in the body 10, and em gaged with the carrier 17. Upon the projecting end of said screw shaft 28 is secured a spur gear 29, meshing with a pinion 30, mounted on a shaft 31, extending below the base 11 to the front of the machine, and provided with a hand wheel 32.

In practice, members 33 of different sizes may be substituted one for the other, for purposes which will be later de scribed.
Slidably mounted upon the bearing member 14L are two guides 37, each provided with a clamping screw 38, having a head working in the T-slot 15. Slidably mounted between the guides 37 is a member 39, which is normally held in contact with the member 33, by means of springs d0, encircling the guide rods ll, which project through the ends of the carriers, said springs being interposed between the ends ol the carriers and the member 39. Upward movement of the member 39, is limited by stop members e 2 carried b the ends of the uide rods 41.
Said rods are connected to a lever 43, actu ated by a pedal link 44;, so that member may be moved independently of the other members.
In practice, the stationary member 33 is removable, so that such members for the various different lengths of coils to be pressed, may be substituted one for the other. The members 13 and 2d are of fixed width, and determine the maximum length of cell on the slot portion of the coil. that can be pressed. The member 39 has its four edges shaped to correspond with different sizes of member 33. The operator first selects the member 33 corresponding to the size of cell which it is desired to make, and attaches the same to the casing 19. The member 39 is then adjusted so that the edge of the same which corresponds to the width of the member 33, which has been selected, will come in contact with said member To change the position of the member39, the clamping screws 38 are first unscrewed, and the stop members 42 are removed from the guide rods 41. The member may then be withdrawn from the guides and the latter adjusted to the proper width. The member 39 is then placed back in engagement with the carriers 37, With the proper edge exesa 17s tending upwardly. The stop members 42 are then connected with th guide rods, and the guides 3? locked in place by the screws 3c. The member 33 is then placed in position.
In operation, the hand wheel 32 is actuated to more the carrier 1?, toward and from the stationary member 13. As said carrier 1}" travels forwardly or backwardly the lower end of the member 24; will slide up or down, as the case may be, upon the inclined face of the stationary member 13, and at the same time the member 39, will correspondingly slide upon the inclined end face of the member Inasmuch as the ll'lOVBiIlQilb of the members 13 and 2a is simultaneous with the movement of member 33, and the carrier 17, the adjustment is effected with respect to a fixed position i", i. e., the upper edge of member 13. Therefore, the manipulation of the hand wheel 32, will cause the parts to produce a recess of approximately perfect rectangular cross section, the size of which will vary with the location of the carrier 17 with respect to the position P. if it is desired to change the shape of the recess from a true square to an oblong cross section, such change is effected by adjusting the position of the casing 19, upon the guides 13, of the carrier 1'2', by means of the hand wheel 21, and the adjusting screws 20. it will be noted that the guides 18 are provided with scale marks to guide the operator in making adjustments for different sizes. The guides 12 are also provided with scale marks to aid in adjusting the carrier 17. If the machine is to be continuously operated for a given size of opening, the abutment screws 16 are adjusted to bring the carrier 17 to a stop, in a position to produce the cavity of the desired size. Said abutment screws are held in their adjusted positions by the lock nuts.
If it is desired to press one turn, or open end coils of the wave or series winding type, the clamping screws 33 are loosened, and the jaw member 39 and its carriers 37 are shifted either to the right or left, until the outer edge of said member 39 comes flush with the conti uous edges of the jaw 13 and member 24. 1-1 stationary member is then set even with the member 39, and the parts are secured in the adjusted position.
The body 10 may be cast hollow and fitted with an inlet pipe 43, and outlet pipe d1, through which steam may be passed, when it is desired to hot press coils, or one or more holes 4.5 may be cored through close to the face of member 12, and steam passed through them for the same purposes. It is obvious that the same arrangement used for 1 ct pressing: of steam may be used for cold L pressin by passing water through the bodv 10 instead of steau'i. If desired, the member s i 1 I 13 may ue separate, and bolted or screwed to the body 10 in suitable manner, and beneath said member, the body 10 may be provided with a chamber d6, to receive an electric heating element l7. (See Figure 9.)
The advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be noted that the recess-forming,members are so arranged, that art-icles of quadrilateral cross section may be simultaneously gripped on all four sides, or articles or" other cross section may be gripped simultaneously at four points, and pressures applied to the articles, which pressures will be approximately equal in all directions. An important advantage lies in the fact that the members areso mounted, that they are caused to open or close in such manner, that an approximately.
true square opening is insured at all times, but that if desired the shape may be changed to that of an oblong section. A further advantage is that the members must normally move in unison, and yet means are provided by which one side of the opening may be temporarily displaced, to permit of insertion'and removal of the article to be operated upon. The invention is particularly useful. in pressing the slot portion or cell of armature, stator and rotor coils-0t electric motors and generators, and is adjustable to a large ya-riety of shapes, sizes and lengthsor" coils. It is to be understood that although the device specifically illustrated and described, is primarily designed for pressing tit) the slot portion or cell of the armature, stator or rotor coils of electric motors and the like, the same has been selected for illustra tive purposes only. In otherwords, the invention is not limited to any such use, but comprehends any assembly of the generic elements which comes-within the termsof the appended claims.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what is claimed 1. A press of the character described comprising a plurality of members one of which is normally fixed, the other members being movable with respect to the fined member, whereby a quadrilateral opening is provided when the members are separated.

A press of the character described comprising a fixed member, a second member movable at an angle relative thereto, a carrier. also .movable relative to said fixed member, a pair of members mounted in the carrier and co-operating with the first mentioned members to provide a quadrilateral space when said members are separated, and
adjustable means for limiting movement of the carrier toward said fixed member.

A press of the character described comprising a body provided with guides, a fixed member carried by said body, a second member carried by said body movable relative to the fixed member, a carrier engaging said guides, a pair or members mounted in the carrier and co-operatmg with the first mentioned members to provide a quadrilateralspace when said members are separated, and an adjusting screw mounted in said body and engaging said carrier, whereby the latter may be adjusted relative to said fixed member.

A press of the character described comprising a fixed member, a second member movable at an angle relative thereto, a carrier also movable relative to said fixed member, and a pair of members .mounted in the carrier and co-operating with the first mentioned members to provide a quadrilateral space when said members are separated, one of the members mounted in the carrier being removable to permit substi tution of corresponding); members of ditterent sizes.

A press of the character described comprising a fixed member, a second member movable relative thereto, a carrier movable relative to the fixed member, a casing supported by said carrier. a movable member mounted insaid casing and engaging the fixed member, and a member removably secured to the exterior of said casing in a position to engage one end of the first mentioned movable member.

A press of the character described comprising a fixed member, a second member movable relative thereto, a carrier movable relative to the fixed member, a casingsupported by said carrier, a movable member mounted in said casing and engaging the fixed member, a member removably seable laterally to re cured to the exterior otsaid casing in" a position to one end of the first mentioned movable member, said casing and removable member having complemental means whereby said removable membermay be secured in any desired position transversely of the casing, and means whereby the first mentioned movable member may also be adjusted transversely of. the device.

A press of the character described comprising a body provided with a fixed member, a spring pressed member movable relative to said member, means limiting movement of said member under its spring tension, a carrier guided by said body, a spring pressed member mounted in said carrier and normally engaging said fixed member, means limiting movement of the last mentioned spring: pressed member under the tension of its spring pressure, and a member normally fixed to said carrier and co-operating with the other members to provide a quadrilateral space when the members are separated.

A press of the character described comprising a plurality of members relatively disposed to form an enclosed quadrilateral space, means simultaneously acting on the members to uniformly increase or decrease the dimensions of said space, and means whereby 011601 the movable members may may be moved independently of the other members.
