G. W. KENNINGTON.
VAULT DOOR.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 8, 1913.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.

INVENTOR W/fiwfl/k fon ITTURNEYS ism GEORGE w. KENNINGTON, or NEVT "roan, iv. 52'.
VAULT-DOOR.
nesasao.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KENNING- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vault-Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a vault door, which is simple and cheap in construction, and which may be readily operated, the door being constructed in a manner that will leave it normally flush with the door frame.
The novel arrangement consists of the combination of an outside frame, formed of channel members, which are supported by side and end flanges, and a plate door or doors, fitting the frame, the door or doors being pivoted to the frame by studs, disposed below the doors, and journaled in hearings in the frame.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement, with parts broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the relative and normal positions of the end members of the .frame and the ends of a door; Fig. elis a sectional View on the line i -4t of Fig. 1; and Fi 5 1s a sectional new on the line 5-5 of D Flg. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a frame 10 18 provided, consisting of end U-shaped frame members 11, having their flan es 12 inwardl dis nosed and side a y l U-shaped frame members 13, having their flanges 14- outwardly d1sposed. The U- shaped members 11 and 13 are bolted to the members 15, these members. 15 havlng upwardly disposed flanges 16 at their mner sides. The end and slde members 15 are secured to the vault in any approved manner.
Disposed for closing the frame 10 there are doors 17, the doors 17 having members 18, secured to their under-sic es, and projecting from their ends 19, these members 18 normally engaging the under sides of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 8, 1913.
Patentedllllee. 23,1213,
Serial 110. $259,729.
Bolted to the inner sides of the side members 13 there are rails 21, having gutters 25, these gutters being provided for catching any water which may leak between the sides 17 of the doors 17, and the U-shaped side members 13. The rails 21 serve to support the doors 17 when they are in position flush with the upper flanges 12 and 11 of the U- shaped members 11 and 13. Angular memhere 26 are secured to the under sides of the doors 17, for the purpose of reinforcement. Secured to one of the doors 17 there is a gutter member 27, which extends under the opening 28, between the doors 17, for collecting any liquid which may pass through the said. opening 28.
When the vault door and frame are con structed in the manner described, the doors 17 will be flush with the upper flanges 12 and 1 1 of the U-shaped members 11 and 13, when the doors are closed, and the doors will be supported in closed position, not only by the rails 25 at the sides of the doors, but they will also be supported by the members 18 which project from the under side of the ends of the doors, and engage the under side of the upper flanges 12 of the U-shaped members 11.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent:
1. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end members with inwardly disposed flanges, and side members with outwardly disposed flanges, two doors fitting the frame, and shafts disposed below the doors and journaled in bearings in the side members adj accnt the end members.
2. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end members with inwardly disposed flanges, and side members with outwardly disposed flanges, two doors fitting the frame, shafts disposed below the doors, and journaled in bearings in the side members adjacent the end members, rails secured to the inner sides of and spaced from the top of the side members for supporting the doors.
3. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end members with in wardly disposed flanges, and side members with outwardly disposed flanges, two doors fitting the frame, shafts disposed below the doors, and journaled in bearings in the side members adjacent, the end members, and members having upwardly disposed flanges at their inner sides for engaging and supporting the end and side members.
at. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end members with inwardly disposed flanges, and side members with outwardly disposed flanges, two doors fitting the frame, shafts disposed below the doors, and journaled in bearings in the side members adjacent the end members, and rails secured to the inner side of and spaced from the top of the side members for supporting the doors, there being gutters in the side rails for the purpose specified.
5. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end members with inwardly disposed flanges, and side members with outwardly disposed flanges, two doors fitting the frame, shafts disposed below the doors, and journaled in bearings in the side members adjacent the end members, members having upwardly disposed flanges at their inner sides for engaging and supporting the end and side members, and rails secured to the inner sides of and spaced from the top of the side members for supporting the doors, there being gutters in the side rails for the purpose specified.
6. In an article of the class described, a frame consisting of end and side members, one of the end members having an inwardly disposed flange, a. door for cooperating with the frame, a member secured to the under side of an end of the door, and normally engaging the under side of the flange on the end member of the frame, a shaft secured to the under side of the door adjacent the said end of the door, the shaft being journaled in bearings in the side members of the frame, side rails secured to the inner sides of and spaced from the top of the side members, for supporting the door, and members having upwardly disposed flanges at their inner sides for engaging and supporting the end and side members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE V. KENNINGTON.
