TRUSS APPARATUS.
To all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MARTIN DUNN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Truss Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and use ful truss apparatus.
An object of the invention is the provision of a device of this nature having means for holding a bandage or wadding saturated with an ointmentor salve, or other medicinal treatment, for treating swollen or distended muscles, or protrusions, better known in the medical world as piles, of ones rectum.
Another object of the invention is to construct this means for holding the bandage or wadding in the form of a tubular member, slidably mounted upon a double strand fiber loop, which fits the crotch of the wearer, and in such manner as to hold the tubular member in the desired position, not only to hold the wadding or bandage against the parts to be treated, but also tending to force the distended parts or muscles or protrusions back to their normal positions. The double strand fiber loop moves freely through the tubular member, as the wearer moves his or her body, whether stooping or leaning to the side or otherwise.
Another object of the invention is the provision of elastic bands including adjustable devices, one passing up the front of the body and over ones shoulder and down the back of the body, so as to hold the loop and the tubular member properly in position in the crotch, while another elastic band passes about one side of the body including adjustable means, and connected detachably to the band in front and connected permanently to the band in the rear. The band passing about one side of the body is designed to be so arranged as to hold portions of the band in front at angles, as shown in the drawings, so as to hold the forward end of the loop slightly to one side of the pelvis bone, thereby adjusting the apparatus comfortably to the wearer. The band passing over the shoulder and to Specification of Letters Patent.

the rear and front of the wearer may be worn over either shoulder.
A feature of the invention is the fact that the tubular member is to be constructed in any suitable manner, for instance, the same may be constructed of hard highly polished wood or highly polished hard rubber or like materials, the ends of which are rounded off, in order to prevent injury or scratching of ones anatomy.
Another feature of the invention is that the ends of the hollow portion of the tubular member are also rounded off or tapered and blended into the outer rounded off sur faces of the ends of the tubular member, so that the same will freely move upon the loop.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a soft padding or covering or shield surrounding the two strands of the loop, not only to hold the strands together, but to render the apparatus comfortable to the wearer, thereby preventing unnecessary tightness or tension to the body. Between the opposing ends of the padding, the tubular member is disposed, the padding being so arranged as to permit the loop to move freely through the tubular member, for substantially a limited space or distance of from an inch and one half to two inches and a half, so as to accommodate the various movements of the body. It is also apparent that the elastic straps likewise give and accommodate themselves to the movements of the body.
The improved padded loop and tubular member may be used equally as well, for holding :1 padding, bandage or wadding adjacent the vagina PGYlOCliCfllly.
In practical fields it may be found necessary to subject the minor details of construction to alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view, showing the application of the truss apparatus, of a wearer. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the loop 18 showing the tubular member 23. Fig. 8 is a sectional view through Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a sectional View on line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an elastic band, designed to pass over either shoulder, and down upon the front and rear of the body. Each end of the elastic band 1 is folded upon itself as at 2 and 3, with the extreme ends of the band adjustably connected to the body of the band by suitable buckles 4, whereby the tension of the band may be regulated or adjusted. Connected to the band in the rear of the body by means of a strap and ring 5 and 6 is a second band 7. The band 7 at one end is bent upon itself to form a loop 8, there being a buckle 9, for adjusting the loop, whereby the band 7 may be tightened or loosened, so as to regulate the elasticity thereof. Arranged in the loop 8 is a hook 10, to receive or engage the button 11 upon the front portion of the band 1, so as to hold the band 7 about either side of the body of the wearer. The bands 1 and 7 may or may not be elastic.
Arranged in the loops 2 and 3 of the band 1 are elongated eyes or rings 12, which also connect to the elastic straps 18 and let. The elastic strap 13 is located in the rear of the body of the wearer and is provided with an elongated eye or ring 15 having a metallic loop 16, the crotch of which is arched and provided with a smooth inner surface, to receive the looped end 17 of the double strand fiber loop 18, while the looped end 19' of the fiber loop 18 is designed to detachably connect to the snap hook 20, which is connected to the elastic band let. At certain times or' periods the looped ends 19 may be disconnected from the snap 20, and the fiber loop 18 removed from the crotch of the wearer, and placed to one side, or about ones side of the body and connected again to the snap hook, and then subsequently the fiber loop may be readjusted in the crotch.
Upon each end portion of the fiber loop are tubular paddin-gs 22, which not only act to hold the strands together, but to prevent rubbing or chafing of the skin of the anatomy. The adjacent ends of the tubular padding are spaced apart sufficiently to permit the tubular member 23 to have a lim ited movement upon the two strands of the fiber loop. This space between the adjacent ends of the tubular padding is great enough to permit the fiber loop to move through the tubular member 23, without disturbing its position, when the wearer moves to different attitudes or positions. The inner circumference of the tubular member 23, (which may be constructed of any suitable material, such as highly polished hard wood or highly polished hard rubber or the like) at its ends is rounded of, so as to prevent injuring the strands of the fiber loop as it moves through the tubular member, while the outer circumference of the tubular member at each end is likewise rounded off, as shown at 24,, and blending into the rounded portions 25 of the interior, thereby preventing injury to the wearer.
From the foregoing it is apparent that there has been devised a simple and efficient truss apparatus, for facilitating medical treatment, by way of applying liniments, ointments, salves or the like, and one which has been found practical and desirable from experiments.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In a truss apparatus, a double strand endless cord loop member, spaced apart paddings, one slidable upon each end portion of the member to hold the double strand of the member together, said paddings terminating short of the ends of the member permitting the two strands to form an eye loop, a tubular device movable on the two strands of said member between the spaced apart paddings and having its ends rounded, the inner circumference of the tubular member at its end being rounded blending into the outer rounded portions, said tubular device adapted to support and hold a bandage or wadding containing medical properties, said double strands of said member constituting means to hold the tubular device against excessive twisting while in the crotch, and attaching means adapted to connect with the eye loops for holding the truss apparatus in the crotch of the body of the wearer, said tubular device on its interior being smooth, thereby providing an unobstructed passage through which the double strands of said member freely move responsive to the movements of the body of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
