OPERATING MEANS FOR STAMP-MILLS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Enwnnn Donnnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Pietersburg, Province of Trans vaal Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Means for StaInpA Iills, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to a means or device applicable for lifting and supporting, and thereby throwing out or action the stamps of stamp mills.
The use of most of the existing stamp supporting devices is attended with consid erable risk and more or less serious accidents are of frequent occurrence.
Now the object of my invention is to provide a means or device which will be free from said objections.
I will now describe my invention in detail with the aid of the accon'ipanying drawing in which- Figure l is a view of one of the stamps operating in a mortar box showing the device in operative position or in the position in which the parts are placed to maintain the tappet clear of the cam. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of that form of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. (3 is an e1evation at right angles to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation illustrating a further modification, and Fig. 8 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 7.
In Fig. 1, 1 represents the mortar box, 2 the stem of one of the stamps operating therein, 8, l upper and lower stein guides, 5, 6 the guide girths, and 7 one of the king posts. 8 is the cam shaft, 8' the cam shaft bearing, 9 one of the cams fixed on the cam shaft 8, and 10 the tappet on the stem 2. 11 is the jack shaft, 12 one of the chairs for supporting one end of the jack shaft 11, and fixed to the king post 7 13 is one of the fingers (one is usually provided for each stamp), and 14L is the socket piece in which the lower end of the finger 13 is secured by bolt 15. The socket fits the jack shaft as shown and allows the finger 13 to be placed in its ope 'ati've position beneath the tappet 10see Fig. 1. 16 is the shoe secured upon the upper end of the finger 13 by means of bolts 17. The rotation of the cam causes the rod to project beyond the upper end ol. the linger as shown in Fig. 1 and so increases the ct- :liective length of the linger 3. 25 is a lever fixed upon one end of the pin for rotating said pin and with it the cam 23.
The manner of using the device is evident ltrom Fig. 1. ol the drawings.
As shown the finger '13 is placed beneath the tappet 10 with the rod 2!.- in its lowernlost position. The lever is then moved to rotate cam 23 which forces the rod 2t upward and so lifts the stamp to a sullicient height to clear the tappet 9.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 the upper end of the linger is l' il,iii'(:ato(l or (-(mstructed with a recess or open-ended slot 26. A hole 97 is Formed in the upper end oi the linger and holes coinciding therewith are formed in the sides of the shoe 16. In the hole 27, a pin 28 is rotatablv supported. Upon the pin 28 the cam Q!) is fixed. The lever 30 is fixed upon one end of the pin 28.
The operation is the same as that previously described in connection with Figs. '1 to t with the exception that in this case the cam 29 will directly engage the tappet .10.
In the further modification shown in Figs. 7 and S the cam 31, is constructed in one piece of attached directly to the end of the lever 32, and the cam and lover move about the pin 3?). The upper portion ol the linger requhres to be cut away or re cessed as indicated at 34- to prtwide for the movement of the cam and lover. The operation of this modification is sell evident.

What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described and comprising in combination a support a finger movable on said support and having a. transverse slot and a longitudinal hole extending from said slot to the upper end of the finger, a pin rotatably supported in said slot, a cam secured upon said pin, meansfixed to said pin at the outside of the finger for rotating the pin to operate the cam, and a rod located in the longitudinal hole, and engaging the cam which rod is projected beyond the end of the finger when the cam is rotated by means of the lever, as set forth.
2. In combination a jack shaft having suitable bearings, a socket piece rotatably supported. upon said jack shaft, a finger the lower end of which is secured within said socket piece, a shoe secured upon the upper end of the finger, the finger having a transverse slot and a longitudinal hole eX- tending from said transverse slot to the upper end of the finger and the shoe having a hole coinciding with said longitudinal hole, bosses fixed to the sides of the finger opposite the transverse slot, the aforesaid bosses having holes and the finger having coincident holes at the sides of the transverse slot a pin revolubly supported in said bosses and extending through the transverse slot, a cam fixed on said pin inside said slot, means fixed upon one end of said pin at one side of said finger for rotating said pin and with it the cam a rod located in the longitudinal hole and at its lower end engaging the cam which rod is projected beyond the end of the finger and through the coincident hole in the shoe when the cam is rotated by means of the lever, as set forth.
