['o all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX Mineros, a citizen oit' the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of rilevas, have invented a new and useful Permutation-Lock, of which the 'following is a specitication.
The device formingthe subject matter o1 this application is a permutation lock, and one object of the invention is to improve the permutation mechanism thereof and to provide novel means whereby the combination of the lock may be changed.
Another object ot' the invention is to provide locking mechanism which cooperates in a novel manner with the permutation structure.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
W ith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes inthe precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1n carrying out the present invention there is provided-a case 1 having an opening 2 and provided in one edge with a recess 3. A shackle 4t is pivoted as indicated at 5 to the case 1 and the lree end of the shackle is adapted to enter the opening 2 to coperate with locking mechanism hereinafter described. though the structure is shown in the form of a padlock, the essential principles of the invention may bc embodied in a lock of any other lorm and the invention is not confined to a padlock.
Located within the case 1 and supported upon a pivot element 7 is a dog 8 having a jaw 9 which coperates with the jaw of the shackle f1. The dog S terminates in a reduced finger 10 loosely received in an opening 11 tor-med in an actuating member 12 taking the form o1 a rod or bar, the actuating member having an angularly disposed extension 141. At one end, the actuating member 12 terminates in a spindle 15 slidably received in one edge wall o1' the case 1 and projecting into the recess 3, there being a compression spring 1G surrounding the spindle 15, one end of the spring 16 abutting against the case 1 and the other end of the spring abutting against the shoulder formed at the point where thespindle 15 merges into the body portion of the actuating member 12. The actuating member 12 is mounted to slide in a bracket 17 which projects from one wall of the case 1.
A permutation disk 1S is journaled for rotation on a thimble 19 having a slot 2O in one end receiving a fin 21 projecting from the case 1, the construction being such that although the thimble 19 may have an endwise movement, the same cannot rotate. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, an annular recess 22 is formed in one tace et the permutation disk 18 and projecting into this recess 22 from the edge or flange portion of the disk 1S is a cam 23. Projecting 'from the thimble 19 is a lug 241 adapted to move in the recess 22 and to coperate with the cam 23 under circumstances to be pointed out hereinafter. Other thimbles 25 are alined with the thimble 19 and each thimble 25 is provided with a radial lug 2G. Journaled on each thimble 25 is a permutation disk 27, each disk 27 having a recess 28 adapted to receive the corresponding lug 2G on the thimble 25. As shown in Fig. 1 there are slots 29 in the case, through which slots the permutation disks 18 and 27 protrude.
The invention includes a plate 30 shown in Fig. 8 in detail, the plate being secured to one side wall of the case 1 and having arms 31 terminated in fingers 32, each arm 31 being resilient and the fingers 32 being adapted to cooperate with indentations 38 formed in the disks 27. The peripheries of the disks 27 and 18 are provided With characters 33. Any number of characters 33 may be provided but there should be as many characters as there are indentations 38 in the permutation disks. The thimbles 25 are mounted on a spindle 311, one end of which is threaded as indicated at 35 into the end thimble 19. rThe spindle 34 includes a neck 36 adapted to bind against the end face of the left hand thimble 25, reference being had to Figs. 2 and 3. The neck 36 of the spindle 341 terminates in a head 37. This head 37 preferably is of octagonal outline and it registers between the Walls of the re` cesses in the case 1 to prevent the spindle 34 and parts carried thereby from rotating under certain circumstances which will be set forth hereinafter. Because the permutation disks 18 and 27 are received in the slots 29 in the case 1, the case and its slots constitute a means for holding the disks against participation in the endivise or longitudinal movement of the shaft above defined. rllhe spindle 3% and the thimbles 25 and 19 constitute a shaft which is mounted to slide longitudinally upon the lin 21 but is held thereby`- against rotation.
When the shackle al is in the locked position shown in Fig. 2, the jaiv 6 on the shackle cooperates With the jaw 9 on the dog 8, these parts being so shaped that the dog 8 cannot be tilted on the pivot 7 When the shackle is draivn upon. The finger 10 of the dog 8 lies in the opening 11 of the actuating member 12 and the actuating member 12 is pushed to the riOht by the action of the spring 16. The extension 1a of the actuating member 12 abuts against the lug 24 on the thimble 19 and the lug 2li lies in the annular recess 22 of the permutation disk 18 to one side of the cam 23. The lugs 26 of the thimbles 25 engage the side faces of the permutation disks 27 to one side of the recess 28 therein. 1t is therefore evident that the shaft comprising the spindle 34 and the thimbles 19 and 25 cannot be pulled to the left in Fig. 2 and consequently, the actuating member 12 cannot be moved to the left, and therefore the dog S Will remain engaged With the shackle il. 1n order to open the lock, the permutation disks 27 are rotated until a predetermined set of characters 33 thereon are in alinement transversely of the case 1. By this operation, the recesses 28 in the disks 27 Will be lined up to receive the lugs 26 on the thimbles 25 when the latter are moved endivise along with the spindle 34. After a part ofthe combination has been set up by the permutation disks 27, the disk 18 is rotated to set up the nal character of the combination. "When the disk 18 is rotated, the cam 23 thereon will engage the lug 24 on the thimble 19 and move this thimble, along with the thimbles 25 and thespindle 34- to thelcft, as shovvnin Fig. 3, the lug 24: engaging the extension 14: of the actuating member 12 and moving the latter to the left, the dog 8 being tilted on its pivotal mounting 7 so that the jaw 9 on the dog is moved out of locking relation with respect to the jaw 6 on the shackle et. Then, the shackle 4 may be svvung into the open position shoivn in Fig. 3.
When the lock is in open position shown in Fig. 3 and when the head 37 of the spindle 341 lies beyond the perimeter of the case 1, the spindle may be rotated through the medium of the head, thus loosening lthe threaded engagement indicated at 35 between the spindle and the thimble 19. Since the thimbles 25 are now loose on the spindle 34C and since each thimble is interlocked through the medium of the lugs 26 and the recesses 28 With one of the permutation disks 2T, each disk may be rotated in order to permit the combination to be changed. rEhen the spindle 34e is rotated so that the neck 36 binds against the endmost thimble 25, the thimbles being held in their adjusted positions, the thimbles and the spindle 34- becoming again, to all intents and purposes, an integral structure capable of endvvise movement only.
`When the parts are Vdisposed in the locked condition shown in 2, the fiat sides of the head 37 on the spindle 34 are engaged with the side Walls of the recess 3 in the case 1. Therefore, the spindle 311 cannot be threaded out of the thimble 19. to effect an unauthorized opening of the lock.
rEhe function of the plate 30 together With its spring arms 31 and lingers 32, engaging the recesses 38 of the permutation disks 37 is to hold these disks yieldingly in place While the combination is being set up as one disk after another is rotated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. 1n a permutation padlock, a case; cooperating elements comprising a shaft mounted for endvvise movement in the case and a permutation disk journaled on the shaft, one of said coperating elements having a lug, the other of said coperating elements having a recess adapted to receive the lug; a second permutation disk supported for rotation in the case; interacting parts carried by the second disk and the shaft for moving the shaft endvvise when the second disk is rotated; means for holding both disks against participation in the endvvise movement of the shaft; and locking mechanism independent of the shaft `and actuable by direct contact with that interacting part which is on the shaft, when the shaft is moved endWise.
2. 1n a permutation lock, a case; a shaft mounted for endivise movement in ythecase and provided ivith lugs; a permutation disk iournaled `@il the Shaft @adhering @recess adapted to receive one lug; a second permutation disk supported for rotation in the case and provided with a cam adapted to engage the other lug to impart endwise movement to the shaft when the second disk .is rotated; means for holding both disks against participation in the endwise movement of the shaft; and locking mechanism independent of the shaft and actuable by contact with the said other lug.
3. In a permutation lock, a case; coperating elements comprising a shaft mounted for endwise movement in the case and a permutation disk j ournaled on the sha'l't, one oi." said coperating elements having a lug, the other of said coperating elements having a recess adapted to receive the lug; a second permutation disk supported for rotation in the case; coaeting means carried by the second disk and the shaft for moving the shaft endwise when the second disk is rotated; means for holding both disks against participation in the endwise movement of the shaft; an actuating member mounted to move in the case and engageable by the shaft when the shaft is moved endWise; and a locking dog operatively connected with the actuating member and supported by the case.
Il. In a permutation lock, a case having a recess; coperating elements comprising a shaft mounted for endwise movement in the case and a permutation disk journaled on the shaft, one of said cooperating elements having a lug, the other of said coperating elements having a recess adapted to receive the lug; a second permutation disk supported for rotation in the case; coacting means carried by thev second disk and the shaft for moving the shaft endwise when the second disk is rotated; means for holding both disks against participation in the endwise movement of the shaft; the shaft including a polygonal portion adapted to register in the recess of the case to hold the shaft against rotation.
5. In a permutation lock, a case; a secondary thimble mounted to move endwise in the case and held against rotation; a secondary permutation disk journaled on the thimble; interengaging elements on the disk and the thimble for moving the thimble end- 'wisewvhen the disk is rotated; a primary thimble; a primary permutation disk jour-` naled on the primary thimble; interengaging elements on the primary disk and on the primary thimble and comprising a lug and a recess; a spindle threaded into the secondary thimble and supporting the primary thimble, the spindle having a head cooperating With the primary thimble to bind the thimbles together; locking mechanism actuable when the spindle is moved endwise; and means for preventing the permutation disks from participating in the endwise movement oi' the spindle; the case beingprovided with a recess into which the head of the spindle is adapted to retire to hold the spindle against rotation in the secondary thimble.
