ALBERT J". WILKINS, OF COAL CENTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKE-CONSUMER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. lVILKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Center, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Cfonsumers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a smoke consumer, and more particularly to the class of smoke bells.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a smoke bell or dome wherein the unconsumed particles or products of combustion thrown off from a flame will be absorbed thereby and such products of combustion will be equally distributed within the said bell-or dome, thereby protecting the wall or ceiling during the burning of the flame.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a smoke bell or dome in which the body thereof is formed of separable sections so that the same can be readily cleaned, and which will evenly distribute the unconsumed particles or products of combustion issuing from the flame, thus obviating the contamination of the air of a room or other inclosure therewith.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a smoke bell or dome which is simple in construction, light in weight, strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in man ufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the smoke bell or dome constructed in accordance with the invention mounted above a gas fixture. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional View through the bell or dome. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 5 designates a hanger which is fixed or otherwise mounted on a stationary support, and to this hanger is connected the bell or dome. The smoke bell or dome comprises a cup- Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped body 6 forming a receiver, the smaller or contracted end of which is formed with an internal threaded nipple 7 to which 18 detachably connected a neck 8 suitably attached to a bell-shaped section 9, the neck forming communication between the bellshaped section 9 and the said receiver, while detachably mounted on the opposite end of the body 6 is a cap 10, the same being formed with a central hollow boss 11 to which is centrally connected the hanger 5 for suspending the bell or dome therefrom. The cap 10 is connected with the body 6 through the medium of screw threads 12 formed on the body and cap respectively so that upon removal of the cap access may be had to the interior of the body.
Arranged in the contracted end of the body 6 is a foraminous disk 13, while entirely filling the said body 6 is a non-combustibie material, preferably asbestos wool 1a, which is loosely deposited in the body and is designed to accumulate the unspent products of combustion or the unconsumed particles issuing from the flame of the burner, which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and in this instance is shown upon a gas jet 16, although the bell or dome can be located above the flame of natural gas, gasolene or kerosene burners so as to collect the unconsumed particles or products of combustion, the filling 1 1- in the body being designed to absorb the same which are evenly distributed therein through the section 9 and the neck 8 establishing communication between the said section and the body.
Formed in the cap concentrically to its center are a series of holes 17 which permit the heat to escape from the body 6 during the burning of the flame of the burner. When the burner is lighted the hot air from the flame will rise into the section 9, thence pass into the body 6, whence the grease and unconsumed particles or products of combustion will be taken from the heated air and thereafter the same will issue through the hole 17 in the cap 10, the hot air being purified or cleaned prior to its escape through the cap of the body of the bell or dome, and in this manner obviating the possibility of soiling the ceiling or walls of fore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
WVhat is claimed is A smoke bell comprising a substantially cup shaped body having an internally threaded nipple extension at its smaller end, a bell-shaped section having a nipple detachably engaged in the internally threaded nipple on the body, a foraminous disk seated Within the nipple on the body, a remov- 1O able cover for the said body, and fire-proof material entirely filling the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
