The alarm attac imeiit comprises an elongated substantially ree'- tangular shaped casing 11 preferably ccnst'ru'cted from metal; and is riveted or othervWise secured to the' outer'side of the suit case at' the pointvvlwere the usual lock is mjoulfitfedv thereon. The usual lock 12 employed in suit cases in thisA instance is mounted in the easing 11 and is adapted to lock .the 'cover or top of the suit case closed inthe ordinary Well-known manner. Suitably fixed to the top of thecasing 11 are bearings 13 in which are loosely engaged the eut-turned pint-le ends 14 of a swinging handle 315 which permits the suit case 1Q to be carried in the hand when in use. The pintle ends 14C are concealed within soeketed housings 16 fixed to the outer face of the top of the casing so as to'give a neat appearance tothe suit case.
The top of the casing 11 is formed With an opening 17 contiguous to one of the pintle ends 1st oi-the handle 15 and over which extends a leaf spring 18 which is disposed longitudinally of the casin 11 and has one end riveted at 19 thereto W iile the opposite end is formed with an outturned latch nib 20 movable into the path of travel of a locking tongue 21 integral with and projecting laterally from the outturned end 22 of a movable plunger 23 disposed parallel With the spring 18 at one side thereof. Mounted inthe pintle ends 1i of the handle 15 adjacent to the plunger 23 is a cross trip pin 29 which on the swinging' of the handle 15 to vertical position engages the spring 18 so as to move the same a distance whereby the nib 2O will disengage from the tongue 21 of' the said plunger 28 and on the releasing of the nib 2() the cross trippin 29 will lie in the path of the tongue 21 to hold the plunger 23 retracted until the handle 15 is swung in thereverse direction, which will move vthe pin 29 out of the path of the tongue 21 of the plunger and thereby treeing the latter so that under the action of the spring 26 its tap arm 25 will be forced against the push button 28 oit the bell 27 for the sounding of the latter to give an audible' signal. c
Mounted exteriorly of the casing llat one side of the plunger 23 is an escutclicon plate 30 having journaled therein and in a bracket v31 fixed to the inner face of the casing a lock key receiving barrel in which is adapted to be inserted a key (not shown) of the lock 12 so that the bit of the key when inserted in thebarrel 32 will vwork in the path of and engagea lateral projection 33 on the plunger 23 when the said key is turned in one direction to retract the said plunger whereby-its tongue 21 will 'engage with the nib 20 on the spring 18, thereby locking the plunger in retracted position and under the tension of the spring 2G so that on the swinging of the handle to vertical position the plunger will be free to move in ,a direction to bring its tap arm 25 against the push button 28 and force it inwardly for the sounding of the bell. It is of course to be understood that the key to be used is so constructed that it vwill operate the lock 12 as well as operating the setting or the plunger or retracting it in a manner as hereinbefore described.
Mounted on the inner face of the to of the Casin 11 is a guide member 3ft in wliich isl` slidab y mounted a safety device which comprises a slide 35 disposed at right angles to or transversel .across the ath of movement ot the plunger 23, the slide beingv formed with a 'tooth 36 which is brought into ahnement with the plunger 23 when retracted on movingthe slide 35 so as to hold `the said plunger against movement when swinging the handle to raised o r lowered' bell 2? or to allow the plunger to move when released on actuating the handle 15 of the suit case 10 whereby the tap arm25 will exert pressure upon the push button 28 for the sounding ot' the bell.
Fixed interior-ly of the suit case 10 and inclosing thelbell 27 is a housing 40, the Same being formed with a central hole il through which projects a square lug L12 fixed to the turning section i3 of the said bell 28 and with this lugI l2'is adapted to be engaged an ordinary clock key ior the winding of the spring of the bell 27 when the saine has become unwound1 it being necessary to open the ease for the winding or the spring of the bell 27. Presuming that the spring vof the bell 2T has been wound for the automatic sounding of the latter and it is desired to set the alarm attachment after the suit case has been locked the key of the lock 12 is inserted in the barrel 32 and on the turning of the said key the plunger 23 is retracted whereby its tongue 21 will engage with the nib 20 of the spring 18. Now on the lower-l ing of the handle 15 of the suit case 10 to one side the cross pin 29 will'act upon the springl 18 cansinor the disengagement of the nib 2O thereof rrom the tongue 21 of the plunger 23 whichwill automatically movel .v contacting with the push button 2S or the a limited distance until its tongueY 21 engages the pin 29 carried by one'pintle end 14 of the handle 15 so that on raising or moving the said handle 15 m the reverse direction the pin 29 will disengage from` the tongue 21 Jfreeing the plungerf23` which under the action of the spring 26 will be moved in a direction to bring its tap arm 25 against the button 28 of the'bell 27 and the pressure of the tap arm 25 against the button 28 will I effect the automatic ringing or sounding of the bell 27, thereby giving a signal that the suit case is being tampered with by a person.
