The lug 14 on the rear end of the shank of the bolt is engaged by the arm 15 on the hub, for retracting the bolt from its single throw position. Mounted on the guide rod 7 is the spring 16, which tends to yieldingly hold the bolt in its projected positions. When the bolt is double thrown, it is deadlocked against manipulation by a thin instrument introduced between the face plate of the lock and the keeper, by the end of the arm 10 hearing against the rear face lug 14: on the end of the bolt shank, the arm 10 being limited in its movement by the engagement of the arm 15 on the hub of the knob spindle, with the post 1F fixed to the lock case.
In the operation of the look, if the bolt be double thrown and deadlocked, a rotation of the hub 11 in the proper direction carries the end of arm 10, away from the rear end of the bolt shank and into contact with the shoulder 9. 1 represents the bolt head provided at its rear end with a socket for the reception of the cylindrical end 2 of the bolt shank 3, the said end 2 being secured in the socket by a pin 4 passing through a hole in the head, and resting in a peripheral groove in the cylindrical end 2, thus preventing a separation of the head and stem, but permitting the head to be turned so as to adapt itself to doors opening either inwardly or outwardly. The shank 3 is preferably shaped as shown in the drawings, that portion thereof. iml the tumbler 13, which yielding operates simply to hold the arm 10 against free or accidental movement, out of its path, and when it engages the shoulder 9 it moves the carrying frame 8 and its connected bolt back to its single throw position. By now continuing the turning movement of the knob 12 in the same direction, the arm 15 on the hub engages the front face of the lug let on the rear end of the shank of the bolt, and forces the bolt; to its fully retracted position, in which position it may be. retained by the slide 17 operated by thumb piece 18 engaging lug 19 on the bolt shank. By disconnecting the slide 17 from the bolt, the latter will be forced by the spring 16 out to its single throw position, and by rotating the knob 12 in the opposite direction, the arm 10 will engage the tumbler and lift same out of its path. Ordinarily the friction between the end of arm 10 and the tumbler 13 will be suflicient to move the carrying frame 8 and its connected bolt forwardly to the double thrown position of the latter, but if the arm 10 slips on the tumbler, it will engage the shoulder- 14; on the end of the bolt shank, and positively force the bolt and its connected carrying frame forwardly to the double thrown position of the bolt.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the bolt may be partly projected from the lock case, into what I have termed its normal locking position, or be projected still farther to what I have termed the double throw posit-ion, and when double thrown, will be deadlocked against any thin instrument applied against the bolt head between the face plate of the lock and the strike plate. When the bolt is. in its normal locking position the carrying frame rests adjacent tothe rear end of the lock case, and when double thrown, the frame is moved forwardly toward the front face of the lock. The independent movements of the bolt are guided by the bolt head in its slot in the face plate and the guide rod 7, and the movements of the carryframe are guided by the lugs 20 cast integral with the lock casing.
The hub of th lock is connected in the usual manner with the key lock on the outside of the door.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrange ment of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination with a carrying frame and a bolt, the shank of which has movable connection with said frame,
of bolt actuating mechanism provided with means for moving said frame and bolt inwardly, and also with means for moving the bolt inwardly independently of the frame.
2. In a lock, the combination with a bolt, and means for retracting the same, of means actuated by the retracting means for projecting the bolt beyond its normal locking position, and for restoring it to such normal position and means for deadlocking the bolt when the latter is projected beyond its normal position.
3. In a lock, the combination with a bolt, of a hub for moving the bolt to a projected position beyond its normal locking position, for deadlocking the bolt when so projected and for retracting the bolt,
4. The combination with a bolt and a connected frame, of bolt retracting means adapted to first engage the frame and move same rearwardly for partly retracting the bolt, and then engage the bolt proper for completing the retracting movement.
5. The combination with a movable frame and a bolt connected thereto, the said bolt being movable with the frame and movable on the frame, of means for moving the frame and bolt outwardly, and for moving the frame and bolt inwardly, and also for moving the bolt inwardly on the frame independently of the frame.
6. In a lock, the combination with a sliding frame and a bolt having a movable connection therewith, of a spindle carrying means for moving the frame and bolt out wardly, for moving the frame and bolt inwardly and for moving the bolt inwardly in-. dependently of the frame.

In a lock, the combination with a bolt comprising a shank and a head the latter being reversible on the shank, and a sliding frame having a sliding connection with the bolt shank, of a spring for normally holding the bolt in its locking positions andmeans for moving said bolt and frame outwardly and inwardly, and for moving the bolt inwardly from its normal locking position.

In a lock, the combination with a slidin frame and a bolt connected thereto so as to be moved therewith positively in one direction and yieldingly in the other direction, of means for moving the frame and bolt outwardly and inwardly, and for moving the bolt inwardly from 1ts normal locking position.
