To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORG SPIESS, a anzen ot the Empire of Germany, and a resident of Leipzig-Reudnitz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Scraps of Paper in Sheet-Sorting Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a novel device for removing the torn off scraps of paper in sheet sorting machines at the proper time.

It is the purpose of-the present invention to remove the scraps of paper in such manner that the single sheets seized by the grippers are allowed to pass freely over the devices for scraping ofl all small pieces of paper which may occur thereon, so that same fall down and may be collected.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 represents in side elevation a device, for removing scraps of paper in sheet sorting machines, which embodies in desirable form the present improvements. Fig. 2 shows same in plan view and-Fig. 3 illustrates in side elevation a somewhat modified form of the device.

Similar characters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.

In the device illustrated in Fig. 1, the single sheet-s A. are conducted to the transportation rollers B, C by sheet delivery mechanism of any approved construction. Before the transportation rollers B, C there is provided a number of grippers D, so arranged that they may be shifted into the position shown in dotted lines. Each sheet A, when leaving the transportation rollers B. (l is thus seized by the grippers and carried along until it is delivered to the transportation rollers E, F. The means for operating and depressing periodically the grippers D need not be described here, because it does not form part of the present invention. Such means may be provided on an endless apron R, as shown, at the ends of arms G, which are supported on a cross beam H. The cross beam H may be actuated by means of chains I in such manner that it performs a forward'and backward movement.

It is of importance for the present inven tion that the road traversed by the grippers D between the transportation rollers B, C and E, F be completely free and that the devices for scraping off the small pieces (it'- pa-per be provided in this section. In the form of-machine illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the edge of the member K serves as the device for removing the small scraps of paper. The sheet A is drawn over said edge and hangs down, as shown. To facilitate the removal of any scraps which may stick to the sheet, there are provided blowers L. M above and below the sheet, immediately before the edge of the member K. A current of air is thus blown against the surfaces of the sheet and all scraps removed from the .sheet A now fall into the box N. which is placed under the free road traversed by the grippers.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, the sheet A runs over the friction rollers O, I These rollers rotate in a direction opposite to that in which the sheet travels. Accordingly all scraps sticking to the lower surface of the passing sheet are removed by said rollers and collected in a box as above desc ribed. In order to render it possible to remove scraps sticking to the top surface of the sheet, similar friction rollers Q are brovided above the sheet which rotate in the same direction as the rollers P. 0. These rollers Q are adapted to perform an up and downward movement, as shown in dotted lines, so that same become effective only when the sheet- A enters the transport roll ers E, F.

I claim as my invention 1. Device for removing scraps of paper in sheet sorting machines, comprising traveling grippers for seizing and transporting the sheet, a scraper below with top edge for removing the scraps of paper from the lower surface of the sheet, and blowers arranged above and below the sheet near the scraper.

Device for removing scraps of paper in sheet sorting machines, comprising traveling grippers for seizing and moving the sheet, a member with top edge underneath the sheet, for removing the scraps from the lower surface of the sheet and over which the free portion of the sheet hangs down, said grippers and edged member being so arranged that the space underneath the road traversed by the grippers is left completely free.
