To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Polishing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to polishing devices and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character which may be of particular use for instance in polishing more or less flat surfaces such as knives and similar articles, and is of such a character that it may be durable, eflicicnt, and be provided with easily replaceable parts, when such parts through wear need replacement.
My invention contemplates a pair of revoluble, preferably corrugated disks having suitable polishing material 011 the face thereof, between the polishing material of the two disks such articles as knives being suitably polished. Suitable adjusting devices are provided for maintaining a predetermined amount of pressure between the disks. The disks are also of such a character that they may be readily removed from the rest of the apparatus, and the polishing material such as chamois, emery cloth or the like added or taken away as the requirements may be.
I will explain my invention more in de tail by referring to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved machine; Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the polishing disks, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pressure controlling device.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, I have a base'plate l which carries suitable frameworks or housings 2, 2 serving at the same time as bearings 3, 3 to accommodate shafts 4, 4. These shafts carry gear wheels 5, 5, which gear wheels by meshing with gear wheels 6, 6 shown in dotted lines, are driven through the agency of the handle 7 controlling the shaft 8. Thus whenever the handle 7 is rotated, the gear wheels 5, 5 are rotated, thereby to drive disks 9, 9, which disks are preferably of punched material having their outer periphery corrugated as shown, the inner portion 10 however being Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably flat as shown. These disks 9 carry a strip of material 11, preferably leather, suitably held against the disks 9 by means of rivets 12, which rivets are countersunk so as to prevent their coming in contact with the devices that are to be polished. The disks 9 have bayonet slots 13, 13 by which they may be held in place by screws 14, 14, which bayonet slots are of such arrangement that when the machine is being operated in the correct direction of rotation, the screws 14 hold the disks 9 in place. Now the leather surface 11 may have superposed upon it a surface 15 consisting of chamois skin or emery cloth, or whatever may be required, which additional outer material may be suitably glued or otherwise fastened to the leather. In this way I do not find it necessary to employ any rubber so that my machine may be of material that lasts a very long period of time. As shown more clearly in Fig. 1, the disks 9, 9 come together and between the adjoining faces of the polishing material upon these disks devices to be polished are to be inserted and these may rest preferably upon the stud 16 and the rest 17. Now in order to get the proper amount of pressure bet-ween the disks so that they properly press against the knives or other elements to be polished, I arrange the gears 5 with their shafts 4 so that they are slidable in their bearings 3 and they are slid toward each other through the agency of idler rollers 18, 18, which idler rollers as will be more clear from Fig. 3 are carried in a T-shaped' arm 19, which T-shaped arm 19 is pivoted at 20 on the base plate 1. A ring 24 is fastened at the outer periphery to the rear of the rings 9 against which ring the rollers 18 bear. The free extremity of this T-shaped arm has a socket 21 carrying a spring 22 and an adjusting screw 23. This spring bears against the base plate 1 and by adjusting the tension of this spring the idle rollers 18 exert more or less pressure against the disks 9, thus to provide the necessary pressure between these disks. Now when it is desired to remove one of the disks 9 in order to change the polishing surface as to replace the same, all that is necessary is to permit retraction of the idle rollers 18 so that the gear wheel 5, for instance, with its shaft 4 may be slid outwardly in its bearing, whereafter the disks 9 by being slightly rotated to permit the screws 14 to register with the large portion of the openings of the bayonet slots 13 may be withdrawn from its mounting upon the gear wheel 5, and thus be rendered accessible for proper attention. The gear wheel 5 has a projecting 'hub 2 k to help retain the disk 9 in place. It will be seen that this disk 9 is made of a single punched piece easily removable having a suitable backing of leather 11 tightly held in place upon which any suitable polishing material may be positively secured,

From what'has been described the-ease of adjustability will be apparent as also the ready replaceability of those-parts needing attention. I have thus de'scribedone form whichmy invention may take, but of course do not intend that my inventionshall be thus limited by this specific description, as this sets forth merely one form of carrying out my invention.
Having however thus described one embodiment of my. invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combinationwith a pair of disks. having pohshing mater al thereon, driving.
means to which said disks are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree-of pressure; an annular leather ring secured to the periphery of. each of said disks, and means countersunk within the leather to hold said. leather in place on said disks. 7
2. In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination with a pair of cor rugated, disks with, registering, opposed. apices having polishing material thereon, drivingmeans to which said disks are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, and bearings within which said drivingmeans are' rotatable and. slidably mounted.
3.}In a machine of the character de. scribed, the combination witha pair of disks having polishingmaterial thereon, driving means tovwhich said disks are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the; saidldisks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, and a bayonet slot attaching device for mounting said disks upon said driving means.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of disks having polishing material thereon, driving means to which said disks are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, resilient material riveted to said disks, and means countersunk in said resilient material to hold said material in place on said.

5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of cor-v rugated disks with apices having polishing material thereon, driving means to which said disks are reniovably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, a ring of leather riveted to the outer face of each disk, a facing of p0lish ing material fastened to saidv leather, and rivets countersunk in the leather to hold the same in place on the disks.
6. In. a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of cor-- registered opposed,
rugated disks with registering opposed apices having polishing material thereon,
driving means to which said disks. are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press. the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, and resilient material riveted to said disks.
In a machine of the character descrlbed, the combination with a pair of cor rugated disks with registering opposedapices having polishing material thereon, drlvmgmeans to which said CllSkS are removably secured,,pressure adjusting -;means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, a ring of leather riveted to the outer face of each disk, and a facing of polishing material fastened to said leather.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of disks having polishing material thereon, driving means to which said disks are removably secured,- and pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to, control the degree of pressure, said disks having their outer periphery corrugated. and the inner portion thereof flat the opposed apices of said corrugations registering.
10. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of disks having polishing material thereon, driving means to which said disks are removably secured, and pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, said disks having their outer periphery corrugated, the inner portion thereof flat, the opposed apices of said corrugations registering, and a ring of polishing material riveted to the corrugated portion of each of said disks.
11. In a machine of the character described the combination with a pair of disks having polishing material thereon, and driving means to which said disks are removably secured, said disks having their peripheries corrugated to accommodate inequalities in the surfaces of elements to be polished, the opposed apices of said corrugations registering.
12. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of disks having polishing material thereon, driving means to which said disks are removably secured, pressure adjusting means to press the said disks together at a portion of their periphery and to control the degree of pressure, and a catch for removably mounting said disks upon said driving means.
