Description

l `Be ,it` known that I, JAMESBBLD, of Branford,

f ."TAMEsBRADY, Orff BRA'NFORD; CONNECTICUT, AssIeNOR To THe-Baan FORD LOOK. Wonne," OF SAME PLAOE.
" Letters patent Neuestes, dass October 11', 1870.
IMeRovi-:MENT IN' Locks.
H The Schedule referred to in these Letters :Patent and-making part 'of the same.
To alt-jwhmn itanay'concern.- 1
in .the county of New Haven and State of `Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the `followiiigfis a full, clear, and vexact description, reference being `had to` the acfsor'upany-V lngi drawing forming"part of this specification, and injwhich-` t f f f f `Figure 1, represents a front view of a lock coustrcted tojillustrate mytimprovement, and as ap-r plied to orincluding anight-latch;
I Fignre 2, a transverse section of the same, taken"` l as lndlcated bythe line xx; and
Figure 3, a longitudinal section, taken as denoted j by theline yg/,iin iig. 1`. Y `Figures 4`an'd 5are side and edge views of a key Lto said lock, `constructed inV accordance with' myin-` ventiou.`
L `Similar letters of reference .indicate .corresponding parts.
My invention, althoughhere `shown in connection `with a night-latch, is` applicable to various kinds of locks, including among others, chest-locks, padloeks, and trnnk-locks,lit only` being necessary to make such changes, without altering the principle ot'- the invention, asarenecessary to adapt it to any particular '.llheinvention eonsistsinfa novel construction of tumblersadapted forioperation by a key Ofiiatcharacter, having a series of"perfor-ations in it, into. l whichfthe lipsof :the tumblers fall, to cause their adjustment,as contradistinguished from mere ward notches; I` F l In locks employing no follower, the tnmhlers themselves mayfalso constitute the boltor bolts; thus the4 perforated key maybe applied to.a padlock having `the tumblers of` acircular vplatejform and turning upon a" center, with` hooks` in them to lock on rthe hasp, andslipsto secure the adjustment of them by the,` perforation'or'perforations in the key; ortheI tumblersmay be otherwiseconstructedtemperate j alsoas bolts. t A r Referring to theaccoinpanying drawing- A represents a lock or latch-case, arranged ou the inside ot' adoor, B, and containing 'a latch, C, under control of a spring, D, and capable of operation from the interior by `a knob,`.a. l. Y u Y Said latch is operated from `the exterior', to open. the d0o1"bya`fo1lower, E, made capable of turningp,
and `havingconnected` with it a cylindrical extension,
14,arranged to turn withina hollow cylinder, G, fast to the plate of the lock, and projecting within or `through the door.`
Thecylindrical-extensionfhr body F of the follow-` er runsthroughisaidcylinder G to-theout-side of the door, and is faced at its outer end by a plate, i1, which has an oblong slot, c, in it, for entry of the key, and which is inclosed and shielded on the exterior by an escutcheon, d. A
Thekey-hole c is extended to run'through the body F of the follower, and has connected with it av stop-pin, d, which determines the depth of the keys entry, and may also act as a stop to the tumbler-s when out of li'ne or in lock.
, Arranged .within this body F `'is a series, consistl yingofany suitable number, of tnmblers, s, arranged one against or over the other, and pivoted as at c, so
`as to present front and rear arms, the former of which have noses for lips f on their 'inside edges, suitably constructed, .to admit of the passage of the key I between them, while the rear armsv of said tumbler-s f are formed'with double or.transverse locking-win gs y, free to enter Openings or slots' .h vh. in opposite sides of the cylinder Gr, and whereby the follower E is prevented from being operated. f
' Springs kserve to give'to the tnmblers their Jock'- ingpostion, which is secured by the wing g of each tumbler entering the'one vslot h, and being free of the opposite slot, certain of the tumblers thus locking with one side'of the eylinderG, and others with the opposite side thereof. v
To adjust the tumhlers S, that4 is, to bring their jlcking-wiugs y withiuthe followeror its body F,
free `from projection into `the slots h h on either side of the cylinder G, so that the follower may-be turned, the keyI has a perforation, lm, init, Vso stepped or shaped on its front and rear` edges, that on the key being properly introduced and inserted bet een the lips f, each tumbler is adjusted, by its lip f entering to the requisite distance the perforation on, to insureV its freedom from lock with the cylinder .G on either side, when the follower is at liberty to be turned by the key. v t
Instead of a single perforation,- m, inthe key, each tumbler may have its separate perforation; or suitably-shaped divided perforations may be arranged to apply to, a specific number of tumblers.
A single perforation, as h'ereshown, is in fact but a combination of suitably-'disposed separate perforations applicable to a series of tnmble's, all of which require to be adj usted before the lock can be ly 'casypassage.oithei-fkey between them, in bringing its hole m ihto and out ofv geur with said lips or more tumbler-.adjusting perforations m, thereagainst the pressure of the springs that control the through for operation, essentially as shown and detumblers. l l scribed.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by JAMES BRADY. Letters Patent, is Witnesses:
