NILS C. WALLENTHIN, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIN.
Application filed December 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NILs C. VVALLENTI-IIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pins of the type known as cuff or beauty pins, and has for its object to provide a so-called one-piece pin of thin metal having integral joint cars at one end united at their outer edges by a web for the purpose of stiffening said ears, rendering it possible for them to possess the required strength and rigidity when formed of the same thin stock as the rest of the body portion of the pin, and to pivotally mount a pin-stem between said ears.
A further object of the invention is to provide one or more arms formed integral with the edge of the hollow body, and to extend said arm or arms laterally across said body from edge to edge thereof to provide a fulcrum for the pin-stem.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1- is a sectional side elevation showing a pin of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of a blank of the pin body as cut from sheet stock. Fig. 3 is a plan view, greatly enlarged, representing the pin body and fulcrum arms bent up into operative position. Fig. 4- is a section in elevation on line 4-4: of Fig. 3 look ing in the direction of the arrows showing a fulcrum arm as engaging the inner side of the pin body.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body portion of what is commonly known as a one-piece beauty pin, which body portion after being blanked out is bent or swaged up into substantially a U-shape in cross section. The catch member 2 is formed at one end of the blank and bent up and over to receive the pointed end of the pin stem 3. At the opposite end of the body, two joint Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Serial No. 664,974.
ears 4t4 are formed on the blank, see Fig. 2, and are bent up into the position illustrated in Fig. 4 to receive the head of the pin-stem between them. When this pin is formed of precious metal it is desired to make the stock rather thin. I therefore provide a web 5 to join the outer edges of these joint ears to support the same and give them the required strength when formed of metal the same thickness as that of the body portion.
The essential feature of my invention is the forming of a fulcrum arm 6 integral with the edge of the body portion adjacent to the inner edge of the corresponding joint ear, said arm extending laterally across the pin body to the opposite edge thereof where it may be secured by any suitable means, but I preferably turn the end 7 of this arm downward to follow along the inner wall of the body, as illustrated in Fig. 4, whereby this end is supported from the bottom portion of the pin body. The middle or bear mg portion of this arm may, as illustrated in Fig. 4, be bent downward slightly as at 8 so as to accommodate itself to the engaging end 9 of the pin-stem whereby said arm may receive said end to provide a fulcrum for re taining the pointed end of the pin in its catch member by spring pressure. I do not wish to be restricted to the forming of this fulcrum with a single arm as another arm 10 may be formed on the opposite edge of the body and adapted to extend across to the opposite edge thereof to work in c0njunc tion with the arm 7 when desired to provide a broader or stronger fulcrum bearing for the pin stem.
By my improved construction the whole pin body may be constructed of very thin material and all of its members formed integral therewith which is of great importance in pins of this character as no heat is then required for soldering the parts together.
I claim:
A one-piece pin comprising a body portion having substantially a U-shape in cross section, said body having integral joint ears for a pin-stem, and an arm integral at one end with one side edge of the body portion adjacent said ears and extending laterally In testimony whereof I aifix my signature across to the opposite edge thereof providing in presence of two Witnesses.
a fulcrum for the pin-stem, the free end of a said arm extending downward along the in NILS WALLENTHIN' side of the body Wall to rest against the bot- W'itnesses:
