Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedD ec'.9,i913.
Application filed July 8, 1912. Serial No. 708,230.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST C. BACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Hill, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lame-Clips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-- ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to horse collars, and has for its principal object to provide a clip whereby a tug may be adjustably mounted on the hame bolt, so as to vary the line of draft, or the bearing of the collar against the shoulders of a horse to which the collar is applied.
In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structurehereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a portion of a hame, showing a bolt bracket and a section of the tug. Fig. II is an enlarged side view of same, showing the tug clip in a different position on the hame bolt. Fig. 111 is a vertical section of the bracket and tug clip, showing the latter in central position on the hame bolt. Fig. IV is a detail view of the tug clip.
Referring more in detail to the parts l designates a portion of an ordinary wooden hame having a metallic edge strap 2 of ordinary construction. Projecting laterally from the hame and through the strap are eye-bolts 3 which carry the usual clip pin or bolt 4.
With my improved construction, I provide the bolt 4 with a barrel 5 which is in the nature of an elongated washer and adapted to revolve freely on the pin be tween the eye-bolts, the barrel being of such length that it extends throughout the space between the bolts but is adapted to revolve freely on the bolt.
Mounted on the barrel 5 are washers 6, preferably two in number, and each of about one-third the length of barrel 5.
7 designates a tug having metal ears 8 with lips 9 projecting beyond the end of the tug and provided with apertures 10 through which a pivot pin 11 is projected. Pivotally mounted on the pin 11 are the ears 1? of a clip 13 which is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal, having a barrel portion of substantially the same length as the washers 6 and having the enlarged curved ears overlying each other in order that they may lie closely between the lips of the tug ears 8.
"In assembling the tug and hame part the bolt a is removed from the eye-members 3 and the washers and clip 13 applied to the barrel 5 of the clip at the center, or at either end of the bolt according to the line of draft desired. With the barrel replaced in the hame bracket and fastened therein by the bolt, the tug is permanently attached to the hame but is free to turn laterally because of the revoluble mounting of the clip on the barrel, and also of the barrel on the bolt 4, so that a free movement is permitted. The tug is also adapted for automatic vertical adjustment because of the pivotal connection of the clip ears with the tug ears, in this way providing for a free movement of the tug both laterally and vertically relative to the hame.
It is apparent that the line of draft or bearing of the tug may be quickly and easily changed by removing the barrel 5 and readjusting the washers and clip.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
In combination, a tug attaching clip comprising a single piece of metal having a plurality of flattened enlarged end portions, each approximately in the form of a half circle, and a reduced central portion, and a metallic trace attaching member comprising a plurality .of attaching ears pivoted concentrically upon the enlarged flattened end portions of the clip, the reduced cenportion to provide flat surfaces on the clip 10 for abutment on a suitable hame bracket.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.

tral portion of the clip being bent in the former a cylinder and arranged to receive a suitable h'amebracket, the enlarged end portions of the clip being brought into j 113;- taposition and held in said position by the concentrically pivoted ears of the trace attaching member, there being vertical faces on the said flattened end portions formed at right angles to the said reduced central \Vitnesses:
