IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FOR HORSE-COLLARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,071, dated October 4, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES F. WALSH, of Hazel Green,in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and use fnl Improvement in Horse-Collar Gaps 5 andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the acco mpanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in caps for horse-collars, to be worn upon the upper part of the neck, under the top of the eollar; and consists of a broad saddle shaped cap, made of an internal stitt'ening shape, consisting of an iron plate and external covering of leather, with turned-up edges, front and rear, under an arrangement which is intended to prevent chatng or injury to the animal in a greater degree than those now in use will do, all as hereinafter more fully specified.

I take an elliptical-shaped plate, of sheet metal, preferably, having a considerable de:

`gree of elasticity, and bend it into the proper form, as shown in Fig. 2, to rest on the back of the neck, extending down the sides a short distance, and cover it on both sides with strong stii" leather, stitching the same together and around the edge of the metal plate, as shown by the lines A, making the under piece larger than the upperone, to form a broad margin, B, aroundthe central stii` part, as clearly shown in .Figs 1.'l This margin I shape so as to turn up front andlrear, and

down toward the points, as shown at C, so that in case of any movement of the cap and collar on the neck lengthwise it will slide over the skin and mane of the animal without injury to it. A channel is formed iu the under leather cover for the stitches to cover them smoothly.

The stift'ening -plate of metal preserves a smooth Vunder surface at all times bearing on the neck, calculated to be much more easy to the animal than is the case with caps without the sti'ening-plates, which soon have creases and ridges formed in the under surface by the cramping and straining of the collar-straps and haines on the collars and caps. Horses very frequently have sores formed on the backs of the necks by the chating of the collars or caps, which are entirely avoided by my improved caps. My improved cap may be narrowed or expanded to fit broad or thin necked animals. By the use of this cap, collars that are too small for the ends to meet over the top of the neck may be used by connecting them with straps to let them out, the necks being protected from the straps by the said cap. The straps D are provided for the purpose of preventing the cap from slipping out from under the collars.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved detachable collar-cap herein described, consisting of a ilexible metal stiftening-plate, covered with leather, turned up around the edge, all as shown and described.
