Description
G. E. HENNING.
GAS ENGINE STARTER. APPLICATION IILBD NOV. 11, 1912.
1,080,689. Patented Dec. 9, 1913. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHESTER E. HENNING, OF RUDOLPH, OHIO.
GAS-ENGINE STARTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER E. HENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rudolph, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engine Starters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to gas engine igniters or starters and is especially adapted for use upon stationary gas engines.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive appliance adapted to be screwed into the cylinder head or wall of the admission chamber, connecting with the cylinder, and by means of which the charge in the cylinder may be ignited by the application of a lighted match.
To this end the invention embodies the novel combination, arrangement and details of construction hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of my invention, Figure l is an elevation of the igniter showing the same attached; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring to the details, 1 is the body of the igniter having the hollow center 2 and the passage 3 connecting with the hollow interior. The body 1 has a tapered screwthreaded end 4 to connect the igniter with the engine cylinder head or wall of the admission chamber, shown at 5.
6 is a valve seated at the inner end 7 of the igniter, the valve being at the inner end of the stem 8 guided for longitudinal movement at 9 in the body of the igniter. Upon the outer end of the valve stem 8 is a crossarm 10 adjustable along a threaded portion 11 of the stem, a nut 12 holding the cross-arm in adjusted position, and 13, 13, are pivoted catches upon the cross-arm, a spring 14 pressing the outer ends of the catches apart, the inner ends 15 of the catches being pressed against a slightly tapered and reduced portion 16 of the igniter body when in the position in dotted Specification of Letters Patent.

lines a, Fig. 2, the catches engaging the shouldered end of the reduced portion 16 when the valve is closed.
Thus in operation, the igniter being screwed into a threaded hole bored into the cylinder head or wall of the admission chamber, it will be seen that the valve 6 will be disposed within the cylinder or admission chamber. The spring catches at the outer end of the valve stem are manually operated by pressing them together to disengage them from the shouldered end of the igniter body, and the valve is pushed back to assume the position 0, Fig. 2, the inner ends of the catches being in spring pressed contact with the tapered reduced portion of the igniter body. A charge of mixed gas and air being drawn into the engine cylinder, a match is ignited and applied to the passage 3, the mixture within the cylinder being thus exploded. The instant the explosion in the cylinder takes place, the valve 6 will close automatically, and by reason of the spring catches at the outer end of the valve stem engaging the shouldered end of the igniter body, the valve will be efiectively locked in closed position. When the succeeding charge is drawn into the cylinder the valve being locked will remain seated.
Thus it will be seen that the device is simple, inexpensive and effective for the purpose of starting a gas engine, especially those of large power.
What I claim is 1. In a gas engine starter, the combination with the cylinder or admission chamber, of a body having a passage connecting the interior of the cylinder or admission chamber with the outer air, a reduced portion upon said body having a shouldered end, a valve carried upon a stem slidably mounted in the body, the valve adapted to seat by pressure within the cylinder or admission chamber to close the passage, and a catch carried at the outer end of the valve stem adapted to slide along the reduced portion of said body and engage the shouldered end of said reduced portion, substantially as described.
2. In a gas engine starter, the combination with the cylinder or admission chamber, of a body having a passage connecting the interior of the cylinder or admission chamber tion of said body and engage the shouldered 10 with the outer air, a reduced portion upon. end of said reduced portion.
said body having a shouldered end, a valve In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my carried upon a stem slidably mounted in the signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
body, the valve adapted to seat by pressure Within the cylinder or admission chamber to CHESTER HENNING' close the passage, and a spring actuated Witnesses:
