CAN-CARRIER.
To all 'whom z'zf may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALrnoNso E. lnrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing` in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Can-Garriers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to wheeled carriers for use by street sweepers, and the object of the invention is to provide a carrier adapted to receive and hold two cans, approximately balanced one against the other, which shall be of simple economical construction, of few parts, and easily operated.
The invention consists in certain. details of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved carrier with two round cans iu place thereon. Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan view, two round cans being indicated by dotted lines7 and a square can also thus outlined. Fig. 3 is an end elevation with the cans omitted. Fig. l is a vertical longitudinal section through the platform of the carrier alone. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is an elevation of one of the side-frames or standards. Fig. 7 is a corresponding vertical section on the line 7-7 in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a side view of the lower end of one of the handles.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
A is the platform of the carrier, made in a single casting in the form of an open frame having large openings a t provided therein for lightness, and having a step or offset at A1 to provide two horizontal portions of differing height, each adapted to support a cam M thereon.
A2 A2 are downwardly projecting arms on the under face of the platform near the front, adapted to serve as bearings for two small wheels or rollers B B normally elevated out of contact with the street surface, and serving to support the lower front end of the platform when the low end is depressed.
A3 is an apron or flange extendlng downwardly from the margins of the platform and serving to stilfen it. On the vertical rear face of such flange is pivoted a strut C Specification of Letters Patent.

having downwardly projecting legs C1 G1 arranged to serve as a support for the rear high end of the platform when required. An arm or hook C2 on the strut engages a pin A on the flange and maintains the strut in position for service. When not required it may be partially revolved on its pivot AL until its center of gravity passes the vertical and is thus maintained in the elevated position resting against the pin A until again turned down for service.
D D are suspension side frames, each in a single casting comprising a central vertical standard and curved braces D1 D1 eX- tending downwardly therefrom. rl`he lower end of the standard is riveted to the sideflange A3 of the platform as at (Z and to a wing A or extension of said flange as at (Z1. The `upper end of each standard terminates in a head D which is hollowed to form a socket Z2 in which is received the lower end of a curved har E serving as a handle for the propulsion of the carrier, and such lower end is provided with a series of holes c c arranged to receive the end of a screw D3 located in the outer face of the head in position to engage either of such holes as presented and thus permit the handles to be adjusted as to height. The socket Z2 is open at the lower end as shown to facilitate the removal of the casting-core and any refuse matter entering such socket. Below the socket and the junction of the curved braces D1 D1 with the head D2 is a rectangular o'set d* receiving the square transversely extending axle F which is secured in place by the clips F1 F1 extending through suitable holes Z5 in the standard and receiving nuts F2 on their ends. On the outer overhung ends of the axle are the wheels Gr, of sufficient diameter to support the platform above the road surface with its rollers B B and strut C slightly elevated above such surface when the platform is in the horizontal position. The standards D D with their curved arms or braces D1 Dl thus suspend the platform and its cans and permit them to be easily moved about on the wheels GV as required, and by locating the two cans on opposite sides of the axle the load is balanced and its transportation effected with but little labor. Wings D'i DVL on the head of each standard afford means for riveting longitudinally eX- tending bars I-I H at about the mid-height of the cans, serving to hold the latter against lateral displacement, and equipped Withl hooks H1 H1 at their ends to which loopsv J J of chain are separably connected to iiisure against accidental movement longitudinally of the platform.
The adjustability of the handles E E permits them to be conveniently placed for ease of operation.
It will be noted that the platform is asiiigle casting, as is also each of the standards D D and its branches, and but few rivets are required in strongly and stiiiiy connecting these parts. The offset in the platform is for the purpose 0f receiving a lower or battered can on the high portion, With a full length can on the low portion, thus bringing the mouths of both to approximately the same level. By employing two cans they may be used to receivel refuse each of different character to con-I form to t-lie separation requirements of the municipal rules.
