Be it known that. I. JOHN W. VAUGHN, a citizen of'the United States of America, residing at Noroton Heights, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Postal Scales, of which the following is y a specification.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a supporting base which carries a standard (i. Iivoted at 7, to the upper end of 4this standard are the integral ears 8 (only one of which is shown) of a beam 9. This beam carries upstanding, divergent elements 44 l0 which form a pocket for the reception of the matter that is to be weighed.
The portion of the beam to the right of pivot 7 is longer than the portion to the left, to 'thereby'counterbalance the weight of the elements 10. A stop tinge-r 11 is struck from the beam 9 and serves-to movement of the rightghand end of the beam. A bracket y12 is seciired by screws or like fastening devices 13 to the standard 6, .though it is apparent that instead of making these elements of two parts they may be in one piece if desired. This bracket is continued to form a web 14 which terminates m I a vertically disposed head plate 15, this head plate lying at one side of the path of movementof the beam 9 and having its lower edge disposed at an angle to the upper face of manner that. while no springs -p t t ,4 comprises merely a sheet of designate corresponding limit the downward position. By virtue of the fact that thesev weights are of wedge shape and that vtheir' extreme width is less than the width of the openings 16, it follows that just as'soon as the weights have been lifted free of the wings 17, all frictional engagement between lthe weights and the head plate is terminated. `I am able to secure this advantage whileat the same time maintaining the head plate in such position with relation to the weights that matter indicative of the amount of the be impressed upon the'head .1p ater as indicated at 20.' Furthermore, the head plate met al provided 'with the transverse wings. It may consequently be stamped out at a very small cost. Since the weights travel in the recesses formed in the head plate, it follows that they are. protected against accidental ment.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are here in provided for accomplishing the objects off the invention, but while the elements shown anddescribed are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set. forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a beam tiltably mounted upon said support, a vertically disposed head plate located above and at one side of the line of travel of said beam, said head'plate'having a plurality of pockets 19 in postage may dislodgesaid beam when the latter is in a horizontal recesses formed m its under edge and which bracket secured to said-supporting member,
a vertically disposed plane head plate carried by said bracket and having a plurality of openings formed therein which open at,-
the bottom edge thereof, transverse wings carried byv said headplate at the opposite sides of the lower portions of said openings, a series of wedge shaped Weights having p seatings upon said wings, and a plurality of weight engaging members extending transversely to and carried by said beam, the lower edge of said head plate lying at an angle with relation to the upper face of said beam when said beam is in a horizontal position, whereby said weight engaging members successively engage and lift said weights from the wings upon which they are seated.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a beam pivotally mounted upon said support, pocket forming members mounted upon one end of' said beam, a plurality of transversely extending pinsterminating in upturned ends, said'pins projecting laterally from one side of said beam, a bracket secured to said support beneath said beam, said bracket carrying a vertically disposed plane head plate which lies above and to one side of the line of travel of said beam, the lower edge of said head plate lying at an angle with relation to the upper face of said beam when the latter is in a horizontal position, and said head plate having a plurality of openings formed therein which open at the lower edge of said head plate, transversely extending oppositely inclined wings at the opposed lower edges o'f said openings and wedge shaped 'weights seated between said wings and having pockets in their under faces for engagement therein of the upturned ends of said pins when the beam rises, whereby said weights are successively lifted from their.
