Description

PATENTBD' 0014, 1870.
ILUJIATOR.`
'EDWARD conan-n, `or PITrsBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
. LatasV Patent. No. 108,001, daad oapberfi, 1870.
lMsRovElwEur m mom-ross.
'like Schedule referred in these Letters Patentand making parl: of the same. l
1, EDWARD BOIBNE, -of Pittsburg, in the 'county oi'- Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have' invented Vcertain Improvements in Radiators, of which the' following is a specification..
" Vllatufre and Objects of-jtlie I iwention.
y This invention relates to an improvement lin thatl class of radiators formed 4of two thin metallic sheets, fastened at various points of their surface, by rivetsv passing through both."
The invention I' have made consists inso" shaping thesheets, at their' point of Vcontact around the rivets, as thattllat portieri of each sheet'. will be trans- .verse, or'nenrly se,'to theplane of its surface, form ing in each a'deep conical hole,'that, when brought together, the-cone formed in one sheet will enter andl rest within the conical portion of the other sheet,
which,` on being clamped between the inside'ot' a washer and a tapering rivet, a greater amount of bear- ,ing will be giveueat this point, Vmaking the sheets doubly stil and secure against leakage, while the cou-1 structionV and arrangement of the partsare such that `the rivet and washer may be easily got at and readily removedhfor repair or otherwise, without danger o changing or aiecting the shape or relative posi tion of the sheets.`
Description of the Accompanying Drawing. Figure 1 Arepresents a sectional view of two thin f metallic sheet-s, .held together by a rivet and washer,
attheir point of. union, in accordance with my plan.
. Figure 2, section of the washer.
Figure 3, section of the upper sheet-.1 Figure 4, sectihn of the lower sheet. Figure 5 represents the rivet. Figure 6, top view ot` the parts.
General Description. l l I take two thin metallic sheets, and punch as many corresponding holes therein as may' be found necessary, each hole a little less in diameterthan the rivets to be used.
One of these sheets c is then submitted to the ac? V tion of a pair of dies, so constructed and operated as to make around each of its several holes, a deep 'anuular depression, e, leaving4 the center, or that part immediately around each-hole, standing upward, giving it the shape of ahollow cone, s, and hy which operation the hole is enlarged 'and brought to the proper i 4size and form.
The other sheet, d, is then, iu like manner, submitted to the action of a pair of dies, soconstructed as' to simply raise the metal' around each of its several holes into the shape'of a hollow'ccne, f, the outside .l diameter of which corresponds with the inside of those,
s, inthe first-described sheet o, so that, when'the two sheets are placed together, the cones. f in the second 7 'I sheet will enter those in the first sheet,' as seen in the drawing, ti g. V1.
The rivet b is then ntroduced, and a washer, a, of: Y the exact shape of the annular depression e, is placed therein, which, o n'the burring of the rivet, clamps the 'conical portion of the sheets together, making a joint aroundv each rivet superior to any heretofore in nsefor this purpose..
Althoughl' have' stated that thecones in the.;
second sheet are struck. up by a, pair of' dies, still, if the sheet is thin enough, this striking upis not necessary, as the tapering head of the rivet willvaocvomplish that object by drawing the thin metal sheet immediately around it into that form, by the process. oi'
hammering.
I claiml. So shaping thc sheets, 'at theirV point-ni` contact around the rivets,'as'that the cones j', formed in the one.sl1eet,l,'will enter and rest withiu'th'e conical.V portions s of the other sheet, c, and clamping the said 'parts .together by means of washers a and rivets h,
substantially in the manner show n and set forth. .A
2. The annular depression-e, with its corresponding-shaped washer. a, incomhination ,with the cones s and f, arranged and clampedtogether by the rivet l, substantially in the manner shown and set forth.
