QU IIVIBY S. BACKUS, 0F BRANDON, VERMONT; FREDERICK E. BAOKUS, OF BRANDON, VERMONT, EXECUTOR 0F SAID QUIMBY BACKU S, DECEASED, ASSIGNOR TO BACKUS HEATER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF VERMONT.
PORTABLE GAS-LOG FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1913.
Application filed January 4, 19 11 Serial No. 600,830. Renewed April 29, 1913. Serial No. 764,434.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, QUIMBY S. BAOKUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brandon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Gas-Log Fireplaces; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to heating devices for houses and consists of certain new and useful improvements in portable gas log fire places. i
The object of my invention is to construct a portable fire place as a new article of manufacture, complete and ready for sh1pment from the factory, and adapted to be set in place against a plain wall of a room in which the device is to be used.
In fire places of ordinary construction, used with gas logs, it is frequently desirable to provide the front with ornamental tiling,
' or similar decorative devices, which are set in place by skilled labor at the time the fire place is installed in a dwelling. This is quite expensive, and in remote places it is frequently difiicult to obtain workmen who have a sufficient knowledge of the art, to perform the service. These objections are obviated by my invention, in providing a construction of front wherein the tiling is set in place and secured before leaving the factory. It is obvious that instead of tile I may use pieces of marble or slate if de sired. It is also to be stated that the ordinary gas log fire place requires a recess in the wall of a room, in which it is installed, while by my invention no such recess is required as the device may be set up against a plain wall of a room without any special preparations being made for it.
In order that my invention may be understood I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings and described it in the following specifications and claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a front view of my improved fire place when completed and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. f is a transverse sectional view of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
. Similar letters ofreference indicate identical parts throughout.
A represents the base plate of the fire place to which are secured the two sides 13,13 connected at their-upper ends by a third side G, the base plate and the three sides forming a frame. This frame may be of any desired depth and is adapted to stand alongside of the. wall of a room. The forward edges of the two sides and top of the frame are preferably beveled or curved as shown, and provided with perforations H, H to allow the escape into the room of the air after being heated. The top and sides of the frame are provided with inwardly projecting flanges b, b, 0. Within the main frame just described, I provide a secondary frame also mounted upon the base plate A, said frame being composed of metal and provided with outwardly prof jecting flanges Z2 b b and a hood d.
The two frames are firmly secured together and at a desired distance apart by means of straps D, while the top of the frame is secured to the secondary frame by the strap D Other means of securing the two frames rigidly together, may however, be employed.
E represents tiles of any desired size, color or design, which are secured in place by passing their ends under the flanges b, b, c and b b b the tiles lying between the said flanges and the bracing straps D, D any number of which may be employed and which serve as a means for preventing the tiles from falling out from the rear as well as for securing the two frames together. I employ also for holding the tiles in place the securing strips D extending longitudinally of each series over which the bracing strips are secured. The strips D are secured to the frame B and to the base plate A.
Secured to the sides of the secondary frame and the base plate I provide a sheathing G of metal as clearly shown in Fig. 4, to protect the wall from the heat of the burning gas. There is also secured to the sides of the secondary frame in any desired manner a gas log E andI may if I desire,
locate beneath the gas log, a water pan F.
which the device is set up, to permit a current of hot air to pass between the sheathing and the wall, and to escape through the perforations H, H of the main frame, into the room. An aperture H is provided in the lower portion of the sheathing G and recesses H are formed in the lower portion of the gas log E to permit air to enter said space.
The mode of using the device is at once apparent, as when the parts just described are assembled and rigidly secured together, the completed article maybe shipped in its entirety and is ready for immediate use.
It will be noted in the form of my invention illustrated in the drawing, substantially square blocks are used at the upper corners which are marked in imitation of individual tiles having a bias line drawn across the block to denote certain of the meeting edges of said tiles, and the edges of said blocks are held by the flanges of the two frames and between the blocks the tiles used in the upper-part of the front, are placed vertically.
WVhat'I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A portable fire place comprising a main frame and a secondary frame, the side edges of said frames being in substantially the same vertical plane, means rigidly securing the two frames together with a space between, an ornamental filling of suitable material closing the space between the side edges of the frames, means for holding said filling in place and a sheathing connected to said secondary frame forming a fire place recess, the said main frame having flanges extending, rearwardly farther than said sheathing to form an air space in rear of said sheathing.
2. A portable fire place comprising a main frame and a secondary frame, the side edges of the said frames being in substantially the same vertical plane, an ornamental filling of the tiling between said frames at the sides and top thereof, securing trips for said ornamental tiling extending over the back of the same, and bracing straps retaining and securing said strips in place and rigidly uniting said frames.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
