Letters Patent Nt. 101,967, dated cette 4, 1870.
IMPRovi-:MENT iN Rooi-fine.
The Schedule referred to in these'Lettrs Pate'nt and making part of the same.
i Be it known that I, GEORGE SHOVE, of'Yarmout-,h
` Port, in the county of Barnstable and State 'of Massachusetts, have invented `a newand improved Composition Roofing and I dohereby declare that thev `followiugisa full, clear, and exact description thereof',
which -will enable i others skilled in thc art to make and use the Same, reference being hadv to the accomi lDauying drawing forming part of this specification.
The drawing 'represents a sectional view ot' a roof constructedof my improved rooting. f
This iuvcntionrelavtes to anew composition rooting,
p olf rather to a' novel combination of materials for constructing a covering for roofs. v
' The invention consists in the interposition, between the paper-covering c and the coal-,tar coating b, of a ,i layer, c, of cement, which isintended'to give body and t substance,` to the root.
The paper or othei` fabric usually employed isvtoo weak to witlistand the wear produced by cxpansion' for contlaction. and does not, -therefore,producea durable roof; besides,`\it does` not expand or contract I same to crack aiidbreak when exposed to sudden ou considerable changes of temperature.
By interposing cement, plaster of Paris, or any com-V position containing lime, sand, or similar substances betweenv the, water-proof coating l), which may be ofcoabtar or other equivalent material, and the paper or fabric base a, AI obtain a roofing which 1s at once durable and elastic.
The cement is sufficiently porous to expand'andcontract Awith the diiercnt surfaces with which it isjin Contact, without injury to itself or to the 'paper or tar, audit furthermore imparts body, and consequent greater durability, to the roof. b i Having thus described my invention,
'I'claim as new and desire to secure `by Letters Patent-3. b
The roof constructedvof fabric, cement, and waterproof coating, as described, the cement being interposed between the fabric and the coating, as set forth.
