OAR DRAW BAR CARRY IRON.
APPLIUATION IILBD NOV.19. 1909.

CYRUS 1,. BUNDY, or JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, AND 'JULIos J. ACKER, or HORTON,
. KANSAS, ssreNoRs T0 COMMONWEALTH STEEL COMPANY, or sr. LOUIS, mrsscum, A CORPORATION or NEW JERSEY. t
can DRAW-BAR GARRY-mom.
Application filed November 1 To all whom it may/concern, T v i Be it known that we, CYRUS L. BUNDY and; JULIUS J. ACKER, citizens of the i United; States, residing, respectively, at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New" Jersey, and at Horton, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Car Draw- Bar Carry-Irons, of which the following is a specification. I
Our invention relates to a car draw-bar carry-iron, and has for its object to prevent the sliding and consequent friction of the draw-bar in the direction of its longitudinal movement onthe carry-iron, and to automatically return-the draw-bar to its normalcentral longitudinal position on removal ofthe lateral stress therefromr 1 It consists in features of-novelty as here-- inafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formingpart of this specification, whereon,
Figure 1, is a front elevation of our improved can draw-bar carry-iron as applied to the platform front end portion of a metallic. car underframe; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section through thecarry-iron, and corresponding longitudinal: section thri mgh the platform (broken away.) on line 2, 2, in Fig. 1, andFig. 3, an enlarged view corresponding to Fig. 1 of the carryiron, shown partly in vertical longitudinal section on line 3, 3, in Fig. 2.
Like letters and numerals of reference denote like parts in all the'figures:
a represents our improvedcar draw-bar carry-iron which in the present case consists preferably, of a yoke having its arms 1. vertically arranged and formed at their upper free ends with preferably, outwardly projecting journals or trunnions 2 which are supported in bearings 3 removab'ly fixed by bolts (or otherwise) 4 to a suitable member or appendage of the car underframe according to the type and construction of the lat-,.-, ter, in the present case to the underside of the platform 0 forming part of a metallic\ car under-frame, the yoke a, being'adapted to-swing forwardly and rearwardly about its journals 2 as hereinafter more particularly referred to.
On the'horizontal cross bar 1' of the yoke a, is adapted to slide to and from each arm. 1, a block or chair 5 having its top face opening 7 than the lateral SpecificationofLettcrs'Patent. Patented N0v.25,1 913.
9, 1909; Serial 110,528,990,
as of va convex curvature. transversely and adapted to support the draw-bar a, which when moved forwardly or rearwardly from its normal position, (corresponding .to the vertical position of the i draft and buffing draft-gear, constrains and swings the yoke a, with its block 5 in a corresponding direction about its pivots 2, 3, without slid ng on the block 5-, t ng face w being such vthatthe draw-baitd in its point of contact with the block 5. 1
Projecting from the bearing face a: of the block 5 aretwo opposite upright brackets 6 between which guided in close block 5 is formed ably in the middle, with a depending lug 7 which passes through a suitably shaped in the cross bar 1 of the yoke a, the opening proximity ,thereto. The
and from each end of the cross bar 1 depends a rib (or lug) 8 through which, and freely through the lug 7,.is passed. horizontally a bolt 9 fixed at the ribs 8 by a head 10 and nut 10' as shown, or in any other suitable manner:
'Around the bolt 9 between each rib 8 and the corresponding side of the lug 7, is
a spiral spring 11, by which, on the lateral movement of the draw-bar d with its hearing block 5 along the cross bar 1', the drawbar 03 on removal of the lateral stress therefrom, is automatically returned to its normal central position.
From the above it will be observed that the carry iron has a swinging motion in the direction ofthe pulling and buffing movee curvature of the bean the draw-bar (l rides and is on its underside, prefer-' yoke a) .in the operations. of the.
whatever position it may be, is maintaiiled at a constant level and horizontally tan-- gential to 7' being somewhat longer play of, the draw-bar d,-
its ends against 3 ments of the draw-bar, the convex face of I the saddle block 5 practically maintaining the draw-bar in the same horizontal plane during such movements, and that the saddle block which supports the draw-bar has a movement at an angle to the direction of the movement of the draw-bar in its pulling and butting actions so asto accommodate the swing of the draw-bar on curves, means being provided to restore or center the saddle block so as to maintain the draw-bar normally in central position.
pivotally suspended from the car, a supcarry-iron, and havin -'convcx :means foryie dmgl What'we'claim as our invention and de- .sire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
1, The combination in an under frame, of a carry-iron pivotallysuspended therefrom, a saddle block movablymounted on the holding said saddle block in a central pos tion to guide a draw-bar arranged insai Q saddle block.
2. In "a car. draw-bar, .acarry-iron port for the drawbarslidable on the carryiron and having its supportm face. convex lengthwise ofthe said bar, an a spring in-' carry-iron, and a p porting a draw-bar, which saddle' block- 1s 3 uponsaid carry-iron.

In a car lncludmg a draw port therefor, which support is mounted to swm longitudinally, and a transversely f movable mem 'er mounted on the longitudi- -nally swinging support and adapted to engage the draw-bar. I v
6. In a car including a draw bar, a support therefor, which support is mounted to swing longitudinally, atransversely movable member mounted on the longitudinally swinging support and adapted to engage the I draw bar, and means-for normally maintaining the transversely yieldable member in a central positipn upon the longitudinally swinging support.-

In a car construction including a drawbar, a saddle'blockfor supporting the draw bar, said saddle block being movable in the direction of the bufl'mg and pulling movements of the draw-bar, means for supporting said" saddle block in position, so as to 'car, members depending for supporting a draw-bar and-flanges at the extremities of said bearingj portion for guiding the draw-bar thereo p 9 In a device-of the class described, de-

mg provided with a convex bearing surface for supporting the draw-bar, said bearing 'member being also provided with pro'ec- 7i0 ace tions between said convex bearing s and the :depending members for retaining the draw-bar against lateral movement on the bearing surtace.
10. In a device of the class described, sup n I porting membersdepending from a car, a carry iron pivoted in said members and having a rounded bearing surface adapted for rocking cooperation with a draw bar.
