Steam-Boilers;

M IRABEAU N; LYNN, or New ALBANKNDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 107,934, dated October 4, 1870,
N l-.MPRovEMl-:Nfr IN `wareR-mnlcr'r'vrons AND ALARMs. N
The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and making part of the sante.
To @Hicham it may concern `ne a known that I, Mm-A'BEAU N. LYNN, of
New Albany, in --the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements for Indicating the Height of Waterin andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanyingfdrawing making part of thisjspeciiication, inV which-` N Figure 1 is a front view ofa portion -of a boiler- `head having the transparent indicator applied to it.
Figure 2 is aver-tical central section through g.Y l, show ing the transparent indicator and the `Figures 3 and 4:` are different views of Athe alarm# valve and the lever which operates' u'pon'it. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the'sevverall figures. j This invention is desi ned to indicate `the height of water' in a steam-boiler byv lexposing-to view, through a ti-ansparentplate, the interior of the boiler;
and also,`to indicate high and low water by means of an alarm device, wbicliwis operated by a rising N and descending Hoa-t, as will' be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the `art to understand my inventionI will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing-l A represents the `head ofa steam-boiler, through which a Ynumberof Nholes, d d, is `madethat is covered externally Vbya plate, C, of glass, or other suitable transparent substance, of proper thickness to aiord the necessary strength. f
This transparent plate may be marked, as indicated -at a a afgrl, to indicate the height of the water in the boiler, and it is confined steam-tight within a `frame,NB, by means ot' packing, c, crossbars, b, and bolts, as shown in iig. 2.
The frame B is firmly bolted to the boiler-head A It will be seen from thelabove description that `I apply a plate of glass vto the shell of a steamVF boiler invsuch a` manner as to expose to View, eX-
` ternally, the interior of the boiler, without materially weakening the latter or allowing the escape of steam. N N N i This plate G is oblong, and is so arrangedwith `relation to the highN and lQw-water marks that the engineer can at a glance see the height of the water in the boiler.
In conjunction with this window or transparent plate I employ analarm, which `will notfbeim-paired 'by accumulations of "calcareous deposits.
W is a steam-whistle applied on -the upper end'of a pipe, P, which extends into the boiler, as shown in abn. that end of pipe P which terminates within the boiler, is,a'valve',ND, which is applied on one .securedat its ends to the inner side of the boilerhead A, and on this rod plays freely up and down a. y
float, F.
To this "fi'oat av long4 loop, T, is secured, which reto the pipe P. y y The lshorter arm Z of the lever is constructed somewhat in the form of an ellipse, andfreceives throughii-t the pipe P. N
'Whenthe water-line becomes too low, the weight of the iioat F will draw down the long arm L of the lever, and cause the lower edge ot` the ellip- `tical` short 'arm to' press the valve D away from its seat far enough to expose the apertures o through tube a, as shown in figs. 2, 3, and 4, thus allowing steam to pass to the whistle W and sound an alarm.
When the water becomes too high in the boiler during the operation `of feeding it, .the float F will rise until a stop, s, on the loop T strikes'the ,long arm L of the lever and causes the upper edge of the s hort arm lto open the valve D and sound anv ceives end of a lever, L, that is pivoted at t alarm.-
The plate'S, which is xed to one side of the valve-lever, is notched to receive the valve D and` prevent this valve Vand its tube u becoming detached from pipe4 P.
I thus secure additional safety by providing the boiler with an alarm, which, in the absence of the engineer, will surely. sound an alarm, should the Water become too low or too high in the boiler.
` In Iig. 2`.I have represented a valve, X, hinged inside of the boiler-head A, at its upper end, and held oi therefrom by alight spring, y, at its lower end. This valve has packing applied around its mareY 1n. g Should the glass plate G 'be broken, from any cause, the pressure inthe boiler will force the valve X'tigbtly to its seat and prevent the escape of -water and steamV thronghopeningstl d.
Having described my invention,
What I Nclaim as new, and desire tc secure by Letters Patent, is-.-
1. The glass or transparent plate C, in combina- 3. The combination of the valve-stop S,'with the tion with a. valve, d, which Will close the opening valve-lever L, substantially as described.- covered by said plate in the event of the latter' be- MIRABEAU N. LYNN. coming broken, substantially as described.
2. The valve D, and its perforated tube n, ap.- Witnesses: plied to the steam-whistle pipe P, iu combination JOHN H. STOTVSENBURG, with :i lever, L l, and a. tripping float, substantially THOMAS M. BROWN. as described.
