Be It known that I, Jnnoirn H. Humvee sex, a citizen of the United States, residing at /Vashington, in the District Columbia, have invented certaln new and useful to a roller, such as is produced by the new process.
Referring 'to the accompanying drawings:.l igure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the completed roller; Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating on a smaller scale the roller during process of manufacture; and Fig. 3 is an' end elevation of the roller shown in Fig. 1.
In order to produce 'niyimproved roller, the body B consisting of a suitable composi 'tion, such as glue and glycerin, is hast abouta metal core A in a cylindrical mold, in the usual way. When the composition has sulhciently solidified, the core with its cast tape or leather, is then fastened at one end to the pins on one of the rings C and then wound tightly in a helical line about the roller, sufficient pressure and tension being exerted on the tape to cause it to make depressions on the surface of the roller: body. -Thc other end of the tape is then fastened to the pins F of the ring G on the gudgeon at the other end of the roller, and.

The resulting article is a roller having a helical ink-applying surface with inter1nediate helical lower portions sufficiently depressed so as not to come into-contact with the surface of the"distributer-plate or roller to which the ink is to be applied.
It will be observed that the elevated inkapplying portion of the roller merges into the corresponding depression by .curves whereby angular portions or sharp edges are avoided. .Such sharp edges are liable to break off and leave projections or portions which, in the use of the roller, tend to fill up openings in the type. such as in the letters 0, h, c, (1, etc. The roiuided sides of the elevated. ink-applying" portion of the roller obviates. this difficulty.-
l am aware that a roller having a helical inlcapplying surface is not new, such a roller being shown in my own Patent Numher 905,182, patented December 1, 1908. lVh'ile such rollers have been found to he effective in use, they are, owing to the coinparatively large surfaces exposed at the sides of the depressed portions, liable to dry out or harden more rapidly than solid cylindrical roller.
lliy'prcsent invention has all the advan cages vof both types of rollers, (2., it has a massive substantially cylindrical body with. comparatively shallow helical depressions in its surface; by which construction, the advantages of the helical ink-applying surfaces are retained, while the roller does not dry out or harden any quicker than would a cylindrical roller.
