Be it known that I, DAVID M. I-InY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to centrifugal. pumps, and has for its principal object to provide means for increasing the elticiency of pumps of this character, without correspondingly increasing the cost of construction or maintenance thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means to prevent churning of the liquid within the pump, thereby reducing water friction to a minimum, and insuring a steady output of the liquid under a substantially constant pressure.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon a complete disclosure thereof.
lVith these objects .in view, the invention consists principally in erecting a gate or shut-off at a point along the discharge passage adjacent the outlet opening, and eccentrically mounting the rotor wheel within the casing so that in effect the liquid discharge passage assumes a volute. form, having its narrowest portion between the rotor and said gate and gradually widening as it extends around the casing wall, reaching its full width at or near the outlet opening, the blades of the rotor wheel approaching so close to the gate or shut-off as to practically close the discharge passage on one side, forcing the liquid to issue through the outlet opening.
The invention also consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown a pump which embodies the present invention in what is now regarded to be its best form, and while the particular construction illustrated will be described with particularity yet it is to be understood that it is merely exemplary and that changes in the various details may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Referring to the several views, the numeral l designates the casing, which is composed of two substantially siinilar oppositely extending sections 1 and 3, as shown in Fig. 2, and suitably cast or otherwise shaped to form a central. chamber -l-. Each section of the casing is provided with an inlet passage leading to a point adjacent the hub or center of the rotor-wheel 13, presently to be described, said inlet passages communicating at their inlet opening, and dividing into two passages 7 and 8 respectively, the passage 7 extending through the wall of section 2 of the casing, and the passage 8 extending through the other section of the casing, as clearly shown in Fig.
The casing sections a re formed with bearings 10 having an inwardly extending rcduced section 11, and journalcd in said bearings is the shaft 12 of a rotor wheel 13, said bearings being so positioned that the rotor wheel will. be mounted ccccntrically within the central chamber 4:. ()ne of the sections, as 2, is provided with a flanged attachinghead 14L for securing the pump upon a ma chine or other desired location. The rotor wheel has a web-plate l? which is preferably integral with the hub 15 thereof, and ex tending from opposite sides of said webplale are radhilly-extending curved blades or vanes '16, which have their outer ends beveled in opposite directions, as shown at 1(3 in Fig. 5, for a purpose to be hereinafter cxplained. The casing is also provided with an outlet opening (3, having a channel or dischargcnissage (3 of substantially volute form leading therefrom to the outer wall of central chamber -land extending around said chamber adjacent its outer wall at the pcriphcry of the rotor wheel 13, the channel gradually narrowing from its full width adjacent the outlet opening (3 to a very small restricted aperture between the beveled ends of the rotor blades and a gate or abutment 17 disposed at one side of the discharge passage adjacent the outlet opening (3. This gate or abutment 17 is jn'eferably a rotor wheel carried by the shaft, including a hub having its ends in contact with the inner ends of said bearings and a central web-plate carrying radially extending blades terminating at their inner ends adjacent the outer portions of said spaces, and an outlet conduit leading into a discharge passage formed in the casing about the rotor wheel.

In a centrifugal pump, a casing having a main chamber surrounded for the greater portion of its periphery by a discharge passage tapering toward one end, inlet means leading into the central portion of the main chamber, a rotor wheel disposed in the main chamber, including a central web-plate carrying longitudinally curved blades of the proper width to slidably engage the side walls of said main chamber, each of said blades being oppositely beveled at their outer ends to taper to a point, and an abutment disposed adjacent the outlet end of the discharge passage and having its inner wall oppositely beveled to form an approximately V-shaped socket for receiving the outer beveled pointed ends of said blades.

In a centrifugal pump, a casing having a main chamber formed eccentrically therein and surrounded for the greater portion of its periphery by a discharge passage increasing in width toward its outlet end, a rotor wheel disposed in the main chamber and including blades having their outer ends tapered, an abutment disposed between the outlet end of the discharge passage and the rotor wheel, said abutment having its inner face transversely recessed for receiving the outer tapered ends of the blades, for forming a close litting construction to prevent the back flow of water from the outlet end of the discharge passage, and inlet means leading into the main chamber.
8. In a centrifugal pump, a casing provided with inlet means extending radially thereinto and terminating in an enlarged space, substantially in the center of the easing, contracted bearings extending into said space, a rotor shaft journaled in said bearings, a rotor wheel on the shaft having the ends of its hub in contact with the inner ends of said bearings, and surrounded by said central space said rotor wheel comprising a central web plate carrying blades extending laterally at right angles to the web and longitudinally in curved lines in the direction opposite to that of the rotation of the wheel, the inner ends of said blades being adjacent to said central space, and a suitable outlet conduit leading from the space in which the wheel rot-ates.
