BOXING FOR COAL-DRILLING MACHINES.
Application filed January 4, 1912, Serial No. 669,501.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1913. Renewed April 15, 1913. Serial No. 761,357.
To ail whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABDON citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxing's for Coal-Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to boxings for coal drilling machines, and more especially to means for locking such boxings in closed position, and my object is to produce a. locking means of simple, strong, durable and eiiicient construction.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a top plan view of a boxing embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a side view of the same. Fig. 3, is a central horizontal section of the boxing.
In the said drawing, 1 and 2 two semicylindrical F. DERUY, a
indicate the members which conjointly form the bod 1 of the boxing, and member 1 is provided with oppositely projecting ribs 3 and a, terminating in alined trunnions 5 and 6 respectively, said trunnions being disposed in the vertical plane of member 2, when the same is in operative position.
At the base of one of the trunnions and in the plane of the axial center of the boxing, the rib 3 is provided with a vertical opening 7, and trunnion 6 is made tubular by the provision therein of a longitudinal threaded passage 8, and mounted in said tubular trunnion and cooperatively engaging the threads thereof is a clamping bolt 9, having a round or tapered end 10. The inember 2 is provided with a pair of horizontal perforated ears 11, which fit against the upper and lower sides of the extremity of rib 3, and a rivet 12 extending through said perforated ears and rib to secure the members hingedly together. At its opposite side the member 2 is provided with a boss 13, adapted to fit against the flat or inner side of rib 4t and the inner end of the trunnion 6, and said boss is provided in its outer end with an inclined socket let, for the reception of the tapered end of the clamping bolt, the arrangement being such that as the clamping bolt is screwed home after member 2 has been swung to closed position, the tapered end of said bolt engages the inner side of the inclined socket 1d and thus in sures the complete and proper closure of member 2, and incidentally locks the boxing closed.
The boxing is internally threaded as customary but as the thread is common in boxings of this sort it has been shown only in the plan and sectional views and needs no identifying reference character. In practice this boxing is adapted to be fitted against an upright stand, not shown, provided with parallel series of notches, into which the trunnions are adapted to fit. Heretofore boxes of this character have been provided with lugs and pins or wedges to be slipped between the lugs for the purpose of holding the boxings closed. My improvement consists not only in utilizing the clamping bolt as a means for locking the members of the boxing in closed relation but also in giving one of the trunnions of the boxing an additional function, namely that of supporting the bolt whereby the locking action is effected and providing the member locking the trunnions, with a socket for the reception of the end of the bolt.
From the above description it will be ap parent that I have produced a boxing for coal drilling machines embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment, of the invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction shown and described as obvious modifications will suggest themselves to one skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A boxing for coal drilling machines, comprising a pair of internally threaded semi-cylindrical members hingedly connected together and one of them provided with a pair of trunnions; one of said members having a socket at its free end and the other a bolt extending longitudinally through one of the said trunnions and adapted to enter said socket when the members are closed, to clamp and lock them in such relation.
2. A boxing for coal drilling machines, comprising a pair of internally threaded semi-cylindrical members hingedly connected together and one of them provided with a pair of trunnions; one of said trunnions being tubular and internally threaded and the other member having a boss to fit against one end of the tubular trunnion and provided with a socket communicating with the tubular trunnion and extending at an angle thereto, and a bolt extending through said trunnion and coo eratively engaging the threads thereof an terminating at its inner end in a beveled or tapered end for enteringsaid socket and bearing against the inner Wall thereof and clamping the two members in interlocked relation.
In a boxing r c al r llingmachines, a pair of internall -thread (1 members pivoted to ether, one of said members having a pair 0 alined trunnions, one of said trunnions being provided with an axial bore therethrough, and means opera-ting within said bore for locking said members together.
4. In a boxing for coal drilling machines, a pair of internally-threaded members pivoted together, one of said members having a pair of alined trunnions, one of said trunnions being provided with an axial bore.
therethrough, and a bolt carried by said bored trunnion and movable in said-bore to clamp said members together In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
in the presence of two witnesses.
