SEED-CORN BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1913.
Appucauon nies my 5, 1912. serial No. 107,881.
To all whom t may concer/n Be it known that I', AMUND P. Hears- GAARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kindred, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seed Corn Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to racks or hangers for supporting ea'rs of corn that are to be preserved for seed.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a rack composed principally of a plurality of units of simple and improved construction which may be readily added to or subtracted from the device to produce a rack of the desired capacity.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved unit, a plurality of which may be combined to form a rack of the desired dimensions.
V'Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement i and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a rack constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of one of the units of which the rack is composed. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the suspending hook detached. Fig. i is a perspective view of a bottom member or section which is preferably used in connection with the device.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved device is mainly composed of a plurality of units A made preferably of Wire which may be galvanized or other- Wise protected against corrosion. The Wire composing each unit is bent to form a yoke or hanger comprising a cross bar or bridge piece 1 and the limbs or side members 2, 2 extending upwardly from the ends thereof. At the upper extremities of the limbs 2 are formed arcuate ear supporting arms 3, 3 which project in lanes approximately at right angles to the Ibridge plece 1 and parallel to each other, said arms bein joined to the limbs or side members 2 by t le inverted U-shaped loops 4. These units may be formed of relatively slender' wire and of suitable dimensions so that the arcuate arms 3 of each unit will be capable of supporting an ear of corn of average size.
A suspending hook B which is formed of relatively stiff wire is provided '.vith a supporting loop 5 having a horizontally disposed cross bar (i of a length approximately equal to the length of the cross bars or bridge pieces 1 of the units A.
A specially constructed bottom member C is provided, said bottom member comprising in its construction two pairs of arcuate supporting arms 7, 7 and 8, 8. The arms 8, S are connected with the arms 7, 7 b v inverted U-shaped loops 9, 9, the limbs of which are extended to form said arms, and it being noted that one pair of arms, 8, 8, are positioned below and offset to one side from the arms 7, 7 and also that said arms 8, S are connected together by a bridge piece 10, thus enabling the section or bottom member C to be formed of a single piece of wire by properly bending the same.
In practice, a plurality of units A may be connected together by inserting .the arms 3 of one unit between the limbs 2, 2 of the yoke or hanger of the unit next above, causing the inverted U-shaped loops 4: of the lower unit to rest and to be su ported on the bridge piece 1 of the yoke ci) the up er unit, and the arms 3 of the lower unit eing made to project op ositely to the arms 3 of the upper unit. AKny desired number' of units may be thus connected to form a rack of the desired capacity, and the loops 4 of the uppermost unit are then engaged .with the cross bar 6 of the suspending hook B, which latter may be used to suspend the entire rack in any convenient manner. The bottom member or section C is mounted by the loops 9 on the bridge piece 1 of the yoke or hanger of the lowermost unit A of the rack, and it will be seen that said bottom section being provided with support-ing arms 7 and 8 that extend in opposite directions from the supporting loops 9 may be evenly balanced or nearly so by placin ears of corn upon the oppositely exten ing su porting arms, thus avoiding liability of t e
