UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST D. COOK, OF LAWRENCEBURG, INDIANA.
BURIAL-VAULT.
iarraeiv.
To all ill/0772, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST 1 Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceburg, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
In the construction of burial vaults various plans have been devised for making such a vault of cement and like material but in setting up, or forming, such structures the labo-rof several men is usually required, as well as the use of mechanical apparatus.
The object of my said invention is to provide a burial vault made of cement, con crete, or like mixture, and first formed in sections of a size which may be readily handled by one man, the sections being so formed as to be readily connected by joints that will not only be tight but will practically join the various sections into a structure with continuous walls, thus securing the advantages of a unitary structure and enabling the same to be prepared for use by one man, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
heferring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial vault constructed in accordance with my said invention, Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the same with the top removed, and Fig. 3 a perspective View of one of the intermediate sections detached.
Said vault is composed of two end sections 10, several intermediate sections 11, and several top, or cover, sections 12. Each of the end sections 10 is of the form clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, consisting of an end wall, two vertical side walls, and a horizontal bottom, the bottom and sides being of uniform width and the several parts being cast or molded in one piece. The intermediate sections 11 are of the number required to form a vault of the desired length and are duplicates of each other, each consisting of a section of the side and bottom Walls of the vault, molded or cast in one piece, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3.
The abutting edges of the several vertical sections of the side walls are preferably formed with grooves extending from top to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 6, 1911.
Patented Nov. I 8, 1913. Scria1No. 612,561.
bottom. 1n the form shown these grooves are V-shaped so that when the sections are put together diamond shaped cavities are formed between the sections, extending from top to bottom. The form of the grooves is immaterial, however, and, if preferred, inter-locking edges may be formed on the sections instead of said grooves. I prefer the form shown for the reason that the sections are thereby adapted for use either edge adjacent to the other sections thus avoiding any trouble or care in the fitting of the sections together. After the sections are arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the cavities are filled with soft cement which is allowed to set and dry, thus securing the several sections securely together and forming practically a unitary structure which will be both moisture and vermin proof.
The top sections 12 are each formed with recessed ends the shoulders of the recesses being adapted to just fit within the inner faces of the sides of the vault. The sections are of such weight that when 1 place the close the vault tightly and securely. The end wall of each end section 10 is recessed at the top in line with the thickness of the side walls for a depth equal to the recess in the ends of the top sections so that the central or thick portion of the top sections will fit into said recesses and extend to the extreme end of the structure. In the drawings I have shown six sections composing the body of the vault and a cover composed of three sections, each section of the cover being of a width equal to two sections of the body. All the sections, however, are of such a length, or width, that they will not be of greater weight than can e conveniently handled by one man, who is thus enabled to construct the vault alone, and therefore keep the cost of the construction down to a minimum figure. A vault structure is thus provided, which, is also available for use at any place, the sections being easily shipped and put together wherever desired.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A concrete vault comprising a multiple of U-shaped sections secured together edge to edge to form the side walls and bottom of said vault, each of said sections being formed with grooves adapted to register with each other, a uniting substance being deposited in said grooves, end sections formed to be secured to said other sections in a l ke manner, each ofsald end sections eomprlsmg a U-shaped portlon and an end portion, the end portion being of less height the ends of said top sections corresponding 7 in depth to the difierence between the height of the end portions and the side portions of I Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the WashingtomD.
