HAND-BAG AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 30,
Patented NOV. 1 8, 1913 1912. Serial No. 717,872.
To all whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that I, AUoUs'r H. .F. Senunennn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vinita, in the county of Craig and- State of-0lrlahoma, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Hand-Bags and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription.
This inventionrelates to improvements in hand bags purses; satchels and similar al't-iclemandhas reference more particularly to the combination of a frame, and a body of fabric, leather or other material associated with=.the frame and having a thickenedvedge portion, the frame havlng a part The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for associating the-framework-and the body portion of articles-such as hand bags, purses and the like, which can be inexpensively produced and readily applied, which effectively secures the body and the framework together and prevents their bein accidentally detached from each 0ther,-w ich obviates the use of rivets or similar devices, which in no manner detracts from the appearance of the article and which is capable of a great variety of uses and applications. 1 The invention-consists in the construction and"combination of parts to be more fully: described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
' Reference is to be had: botheaccompanyficationgi in which similar characters of reference indiicatecorresponding parts. in all the-views, and in which Figure I is a: side-elevation of a purse, partly in sectionyconstituting an embodi ment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar, i fragmentary 'view,-wsh0wing another em-1 bud'iinent oft-he invention; Fig. 3 is an enlarged, transverse section on the'line 33 of Pi 1 Fig. 4 issa: longitudinal section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary; transversesection of a modified embodiment of the invention; Fig. 6 is o fragmentary side'elevation showing a further modified form of the invention; and' F5 ."7 is a transverse section on the line 77 of rig. 6. 4
Before proceeding to a more detailed e'xplanation-of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while I have-exemplified the same as applied to hand bags or purses, it can also be advantageously employed wit-h all like articles in which metallic or similar" frameworks are associated with the bodies of the articles, which consist of leather,- fabric or similar material. As a rule, in articles of this kind, the framework consists of channel-slmped members which receive the edges of-the bodies, and are clamped or crimped upon the edges for the purpose of securing them in place. Again, the framework may berivetedto the body. In the-first case,- the edges of the leather or otherumaterial will readily pull loose from the framework, ttnd'the disadvantage of that construction is thus obvious. When rivets are used the appearance of the article is often unsightly, and the cost of manufacture is increased by their use. In my invention, as will appear hereinafter, the edge portions of the body are thickened by means of the application of an elongated member such as a wire, which, with the edge, is received irr the channeled framework. The latter is :then criinped or clamped upon the edge, embracing the elongated member, which thus serves to prevent the edge portions from bein accidentall withdrawn from the channe ed frame. C ertain of the details of construction shown fonexample herewith, form no part oflthe invention,' and' can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions,'witl1out departing from the underlying spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown a side elevation of a purse having a body 10 of leather or the like, the freeedges of which are received in two frame members 11,- of U-form, and 0f channel-shaped cross section, the: members being hinged tote-ether i'n'theusual manner, and being. provided with a fastening device 12 Each of 'the members 11 has anwexterior'side flange 31, a bridge 32 integral with and'at right angles to the flange, and an'interior flange 33 substantially'parallel to the exterior flange and integral with the bridge. The inner flange has its lower portion 34 oflset toward and. parallel to the exmay be of any cross section, though I have which the body shaped shown it for example, herewith, as of the usual circular cross section.
The wire member 14 engaging the edge of the body 10 is inclosed between the flanges 31 and 33, and is supported by the shoulder 35 formed in the inner flange, so that the body engaged between the flanges of the member 11 is anchored on the shoulder 35. ft will be understood that either one or both of the flanges of each frame member may be pressed inwardly against the body to clamp the frame in lace. In Fig. 2 is shown a slightly modified form of the invention, comprising a body 15 and a channel-shaped member 16 similar in structure to the member 11 and receiving the edge portion of the body. Along the edge of the body are provided openings 17 suitably spaced apart. T employ a number of separate, elongated members 18 and 19, each extending along one edge of the body. This form of the invention is thus distinguished from that shown in Fig. 1, in which a single, continuous member 14 is used, bent to conform to the outline of the edges of the body received within the frame, as is shown in Fig. 4. Furthermore, the members 18 and 19 are offset alternately in opposite directions.
In Fig. 5 is shown a form of the device in 20 has associated therewith two frame members 21 and 22 of channelshaped cross section, and each receiving an edge of the body provided with the thickening member 23. The frame member 22 extends beyond the frame member 21 and has a double, laterally disposed bridge 24 which extends over the bridge 36 of the member 21.-
In Figs. 6 and 7 l have illustrated a further modification of the invention, comprising a body 25' and a channeled frame member 26, similar to memberll and receiving an edge of the body, provided with a thick- 27 extending through a plurality of openings 28 provided for the purpose, along. the edge of the body. The shoulder 35" has a number of spaced U- incisions 29, forming tongues 30. When the channeled frame member is clamped upon the edge of. the body as shown v exterior flange in Fig. inwardly and against the elongated member 27, thus forming a positive lock, which prevents the withdrawal body from the frame. The parts are so proportioned that each tongue is disposed at a part of the body at which a length of the member 27 is located.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent r 1. In combination, a bag frame formed of two co-acting members, each comprising an exterior side flange, an upper bridge integral with said flange and at right angles to the same, and an interior flange substantially parallel to said exterior flange and integral with said bridge, said inner flange having its free end oflset toward said exterior flange, said offset being substantially parallel to said exterior flange and thereby forming an enlargement between said flanges near said bridge; a wire member located in said enlargement; and a bag body having a portion adapted to enter between said flanges, said portion having openings at predetermined distances from each other through which said wire member is made to pass.
2. In combination, a bag frame formed of two co-acting members,.each member comprising an exterior side flange, an upper bridge integral with said flange and at right angles to the same, and an interior flange substantially parallel to said exterior flange and integral with said bridge, said inner flange having its free end oflset toward said exterior flange and substantially parallel to the same, and thereby forming a shoulder in said inner flange; a wire member between said flanges above said shoulder; and a bag body having a portion adapted to enter between-said flanges and having openings at predetermined distances from each other, said wire member passing through said openings in said portion and forcin the portions between the openings longitudinally against said flanges above said shoulder.
3. In combination, a bag frame formed of two co-acting members, each member comprising an exterior side flange, an upper bridge integral with said flange and at right angles to the same, ,,and an interior flange substantially parallel to said exterior flange and integral of the edge of the with said bridge, said inner 7 each of these tongues is forced flange having its free end offset toward said and substantially parallel to same, thereby forming a shoulder in said inner flange; a wire member between said flanges above said shoulder; and a bag body having a'portion adapted to enter between said flanges and having openings at predetermined distances from each other, said AI. H. F. SCHLIEOKER.
