To all whom't ma concern.'
Be it -known t at we, `Invmo H. Lroirs yand Rsom. -J. GnUENmo, citizens of the United 'States 'resid-ing'at San Francisco, 1n the county o San Francisco and -State of California, have 'invented certain vnew and useful Im rovemcnts -in ISuit-Boxes, of which the y ollowing isa specification.
llhis invention relates 'to that class of -boxes which Vare usually made yof palperbonrcl or card-board, and are Acommonly used by tailors and yothers 'for deh-very suits of clothes 'and for analogous purposes, -and Aare therefore sometimes designated as suit-enses. 4'Ioxes'of this class are also commonly made of twosimilar.- rts, -one teleseopng wthinthe other. 4 hen such boxes or suit-'casesareem loyed forrelativelyheavy garments, especial for rc lete-suitsfand for ovcrcoats," it as been ound convenient to provide euch of `the 'two parte of the telesccping box with '.a handle .for carryn the same, and yalso 4to :a'rra 'this `han e fm vconnection with a reinforcing device of angular formation applied fm 'the box in such a manner'as'to reinforce and -stiflien 'the same along the line where the vedge member joins the sidefmemberof the box.
-A telescoping box 'or suit-case :provided with handles and lhaving angle-'form.re1n forcing members, such las above mentioned is illustrated 'in :Letters lPatent'of the United States, No. 1,027,885, 'granted loo rRaoul 3. -Gruenbcrg, May 21.-, '1912, for fboirhan' dies to which reference 'muy befhad.; and our 'present limprovements are more lpart-icularly desi ned for use in connection with boxes of tie class'described in laid Gruenherg'patent, and especially whensuch 'boxes are provided with locking devicesfatthecormers so 'that `by Iunlocking lthe corner hooks, in a well known `manner now 'in vgeneral fuse, the boxes may be acked in a Huit 'or knocked-'down form m 'order to facilitate shi ping and storing the same.
n lthe accompanymg'drawing Fforming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is fan isomelrcal view of a portion of -one of the parts of a suit-case or boxioftheclass above specified, embodying our rpresent'im rover ments. Fig. 2 1s a central sectiona :view transversely of the end member 'of the box,r in the plane X-X, Fig. '1. Fig.' 8 is a view ,similar to Fi 2, but showingtheparts folded down notify 'to a nat Term, as vhen the box is of the knock-down kind.
Similar characters all of 'theiviews lI-n the drawing, a side-,member of the box 'is desi ted 'by S, and-one of the end-walls 'Ur ed -members by E; but onlysuch a .portion of 'one'end of a-box is shown as deemed convenient for illustrating the 4present imjprovcments, other portions being broken mwayz" Ar primary, angle-form reinforce, comprising the late-form members 6 vand 7, fis shown'ap lie 'inside the'b'ox, and extend fing along t e adjoiningedges of the boxwalls, 5S and E. -A slo't may be made at 8 in the corner ofthe box, for the handle 5, `when this connects with said reinforce 6-'-7 :but -invsom'e instances, if-desired,=this handle and the slottherefor may be omitted.'
A secondary reinforce, *also of angle-form, consists of the late-form members '12 :and 14, and 'isaffxedj on sad- :primary reinforce, f6-7 'longitudinally' thereof and vwith the `:mem er l14 located at a considerable distance laway from and relatively parallel Ito the member 7 of said I'primary' reinforce. This secondary ian'gle-member, l2- 14, being of an extended length and applied on the .pri- 'ma'ry Fa le-lform reinforce, 6 7, Ioperates 'forf'dircix'stiifening the Iedge-member I'E yof 'thelbox his fis done in part by the addiltionl thickness 'of Ethe part 12 allixed fthrou houtxits length yunclerthe lateral part '6 of -e :primary reinforce.
A further and lrelatively lgreater addi- .tional-support-'is afforded by the vertically disposed web 14, 'which acts-afterftlie manner-Uf a 'rib 'or'beam lfor'stifening 'the 'ed fvcmember E against being flexed downwardly by .nnyload which -may be-ca-rried by said web |11,\or'beothcrwise broilght to bear on rsaid -uboixdmember 1E. lFor increasing this supporting laction, 'the secondary reinforce A'l2-114,',may belextend'ed in lpraetice, lto any ilength found desirable #for fmeetin the yref urrements -in an l'given case. flhe reinorce member 7 i eing joined, in 'the preferred construction herein shown, by "the transverse .glatte-'form member' with the reinforce we 'or rib '14,these two relatively parallel members 7 land l14, together with their -said connection '6, constitute a comi ound frenforce which has the `sectional drm 'of a' channel-bar, (see Fig. 2),1and is 'therefore exceptionally effective as a reinforce 'f or stiffenng the flexible box wall E. ",ffTlie reinforce web 14 may be of 'such designate like parts in ldepth, measured downwardly from the plate llO 6,-and vl considering the ,edge-member E as for siipplyingsuflicient stability in the com'- bined members. InA ractice,1we prefecto, make-that depthl or width of the member 14,`
. atleast equal .to lthe width of thelmember f?. ln the drawing lsaid y.member 14 is shown extended, as at 114, and this extension is slio\\" ii1 provided with a series of holes, as h,
asrone suitable means ...whereby to tieon, or otherwise attachor 'connect thereto,l any goods or articles within the box. Thus the member 14, withitsiattaching tiange 12 con- -stitute-a combinedlreinforce'and Iba -car- 15 rier, and these'are shown" formed in a single` piece. Where theLedge-memberiof the box j anfglej-form reinforce extends along and rein orces the joined; ed es.of said. boxgmeinibers, sothat the secon ary an le-form reinforce,.which'is locatedjat. a istance from the box;side,-constitutes one side of a corni pound reinforce-...which has a` channel-bar sectional form and has its separated plateform. portions located in substantiall paral-l` lel planes and.-inthe direction-oft e loadcarrying-stress and verticallyrto said edge member E oftheboir. i' .I Y' 4 -i Vhen .the box is'fof the knock-down kind,
3o the'corners may. be'detachably'connected in the' u'snal wa f y hooks, of which one of a ...well-known orm is xindicated at k, Fig. 1. In"this k1`iidofboxes, thefline of yjuncture at9, is a bending-joint, andthe reinforce members will also each of them have a similarbending-joint connection. ylongitudinally thereof.. By these means, the prima yreinforce, 6 7, andthe secondary-rein orce,
124-14, are each foldable, concurrently with i0 the box-sides, so that on unfolding the box, the box walls together with. the channel-bar foi-m of comound reinforce, mayzall be unfolded toget er into` the compact and flatform illustrated in Fig. 3.
-15 Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a garment receptacle, the combination, with a box having an edge-member joined with the side-member, and with aso primary angle-formreinforce comprising two plate-form portions secured respectively to the edge-member and side-memberof the box, and extendin alon and reinforcing the 'oined edges o said geit-members, of.a
.n.3 corn *ined reinforce and load-carrier connectiiigalong.- its. attachingend with .the primary-reinforce plate which is secured to said ed e-member, and having-its saidy attachin en( in an angle-formconstituting a secon to ary reinforce located-Lata distance from the boit-side, the. secondary'reinforce I'and the primary reinforce.; together constituting' a anglecompoundreinforce of channel-bar sectional f n ,iiiember of the box, substantially as described.
2. `Iiiffa garment receptacle, the combination, with a box having an edoe-iiiember jointed with the side-member and with two jointed late portions secured respectively to the e e-member and side-member of the box and ormin when the box is folded up, ya foldable ang e-form primary reinforce alon the jointed edges of said box-members, and iaving a bendinf1 joint adjacent thereto, of a .combined reinforce and load-carrier connecting along its attachin end with the primar -reinforce plate wliic is secured to said e ge-member, and while the box is folded up for use having its said attaching end in an angular form constituting a secondary reinforce, and located at a distance 855;'v from the box-side so that on unfolding the \-.L.'` y* box to a plate-form, the two said angle-form reinforce members are also unfolded to a flat formf'whileithe said attaching end is Ifoldeddownagainst theedge member of the OX.' i`l- FX` 8.'.In a'garmentreceptacle, the combination; with a box having an edge-member jointed with the side-member and having a iandle-receiving slot at the joint, of the handle4 extendiii .outwardly through said slot and within tglie box having two jointed plate-portions secured respectively to the .edge-member and side-member of the box,
and forming A.when the box isvfolded up, a 100 primar 'angle-form reinforce along the slot anda cad-carrier having its attaching end affixed to the reinforce plate which is securedto the ed e-member, and liavino' a bending joint a and while jacent thereto,
Ithe b'oxlis folded up for use having its said attaching end in an angular form constituting a secondary reinforce, and located at a distance from the box-side so that on unfolding-the box to a flat form, the two said orm reinforce members are also iinfoldedto a flat form while the load-carrier yis foldeddownagainst the side member of the box. y IRVING H.
