Be it known that I, -Vroron M. SUMMA, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a ctiz'en'of ,the .United States, have invented certain `new ,and useful Improvements in Car-,Roofs,1of whichthe following is a full,
clear, and exact description, such as will en-fl theart.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a carroof constructed in,.accordance -with this .lnventi on, one-half of Said roof being illustrated with the roof v is a detail View, partly in section, illustrating the manner of attaching ,the l'ends of the carlines to the Wall plate.
The object of this invention is to provide a substantial roof st-ructure comprising a minimum lnumber of parts, and each of said parts vbeing of simple design .for facilitating ease of manipulation.
A further object is to so dispose the connections between the several roofing plates,
and between the roofing plates and the purlins, that the adjacent portions of the plates will serve to greatly reinforce the purlins and thus .render .possible -theuse of purl'ms of less cross sectional area than lwould be otherwise required.
Referring tothe drawing, the numerals l-l indicate the side posts of the car structure yand 2-2 the sheathing plates applied to .the outer .faces thereof. The longitudinallyextending side plates as 3 3, fixed to the upper ends of the posts l. may comprise any desired cross section but are preferably of Z shape, being disposed with their webs' horizontal and with inner flanges l upstanding from said webs, `and with outer flanges 5 depending. The upstanding flanges 4 are preferably fixed to the outer faces of the up per edges of the sheathing plates 2 by through rivets, some of which extend through the flanges of posts l.
The carlines 66 are illustrated as comprising simple angle sections, each with one of its flanges disposed horizontall and its other flange depending. Said carlines may however, be formed of any desired cross section. Each of the carlines extends continu? ously from side Wall to side wall, being bent at its middle point for inelining its opposite ends downwardly as is customary. The opposite end portions as 6-6fL extend over and beyond the `upper edge of the sheathing plates 2 and are bent vertically downward,
outside of said plates, sothat their extreme ends rest squarely upon the upper surfaces ofthe Webs of the side plates 3. One of their flanges is extended and bent to a horizontal as at 7 `and riveted to the upper surface of the side plate. Qnly two purlins are employed and these as 8-8, are fixed to the carlines at points spaced equi-distant upon opposite sides of the longitudinal median line of the roof. Euch of the purlins 8 comprises an angle section disposed with a substantially horizontal flange fixed to lthe upper surfaces of the horizontal flanges of the carlines, and a substantially vertical flange upstanding from the inner edge of said horizontal flange. The roof is thus divided lon gitudinally into three sections, each section being adapted to he covered by an independently formed, longitudinally extending, roof plate sect-ion; a central roof platel section 9 being disposed for covering the space between the purlins, and side roof plate sections 10-10 being disposed for covering the space between the purlins and the adjacent side plates 3.
The roof plate .sections 10 have their opposite longitudinal edges fixed to the purlins Sfand to the side plates 3 respectively. At intervals along the length of the car are U shaped running board saddles as 11-11. These saddles span the roof plate section 9 and the opposite legs thereof de` pend and are fixed to the outer faces of the upstanding flanges of the purlins by rivets extending through the intermediate Bauges 9? 10a of the roof plate sections. 'lhe usual running boards as 12-12 are fixed to the upper surfaces of the saddles 11 and extend longitudinally abovey the section 9, being spaced therefrom. The lapping, substantially vertical, flanges of the plates 9 and 10 extending from end wall to end wall of the car, being rigidly fixed together throughout their length, materially assist the purlins in sustaining the roof against sagging in- I termediat'e its length. A car roof structure comprising a roof plate extending substantially from end to end of the car having marginal flanges extending throughout its length, a flanged roof plate extending throughout the length -of said first roof plate having one of its fianges permanently fastened to one of the flanges of said first roof plate for strengthening said first plate, and an angled purlin containing within the angle the flanges of said flanged roof plates. i
8. In a car roof structure, the combination comprising a pair of roof plates, hanged purlins spaced apart, and a channel shaped roof plate having flanges lapping and belng fixed to the fianges of said purlins, and running board saddles fixed tothe fianges of said purlins. t
9 A car roof structure comprising a air of parallelly disposed roof plates exten ing substantially from end to vend of the car being spaced apart and having marginal flanges along their adjacent edges, said fianges extending substantially from end to end of the car, a channel shaped roof plate extending substantially vfrom end to end of the car intermediate said first plates having 'flanges lapping and being fixed to the flanges of said first plates for strengthening said first plates, and running board saddles fixed to said fianges.
10. In a car roof structure, the combination comprising flanged purlins spaced apart, a channel shaped roof plate having flanges fixed to said purlins, and running board saddles fixed to said flanges.
11. A car roof structure comprising a pair of' parallelly disposed spaced apart roof plates extending substantially from end wall to end wall of the car, a central roof plate section positioned above said roof plates, fastened thereto and extended beyond the end walls, said extended portion being bent to form an end ventilator. l
12. Ina car roof structure, the combination with a car end wall and side-plates, of a roof comprising carlines lapping and affixed to said side-plates, and roof plates some of which are secured to said sideplates, one of said roof plates being vertically spaced from saidl carlines and extending longitudinally beyond said end wall and spaced vertically and horizontally therefrom to form a ventilator for said car.
13. In a car roof structure, the combination with a car end wall, and acarline, of a roof plate spaced above and extending beyond said end wall and carline and being bent downwardly across the outer face of said end Wall to form a ventilator for said car.
14. In a car roof structure, the combination with a car end Wall, of flanged purlins spaced apart, a carline connecting said purlins, a channel-shaped roof plate spaced at its middle portion vertically away from the carline and fixedfto said purlins at its edges and lextending'beyond the ends of the purlins and said end wall, and spaced vertically and horizontally from the end wall to form a ventilator for said car.
15. In a car roof structure, the combination comprising a plurality of carlines, purlins fixed to said carlines, roof plates fixed to said carlines having right-angularly disposed flanges fixed to said purlins, and an inverted channel shaped roof plate having flanges fixed to the flanges of said rst mentioned plates.
16. In a car roof structure, the combination comprising a plurality of carlines, purlins fixed to said carlines, and a channel shaped roof plate s aced above said carlines having depending f anges fixed to said purlins.

In a box car roof, the combination with side Walls comprising posts and sheathing plates fixed thereto and side plates extending longitudinallyl along the upper edges of said sheathing plates, of carlines extending across the up er edges of said sheathing plates bein flixed to said side plates, and said posts being extended above aid side plates and being fixed to said carmes.
18.. In a car roof structure, the combination of carlines, spaced angular purlins, spaced side roof plates lapping the purlins and secured directly thereto and to the carlines, and an interposed inverted channelshaped intermediate roof plate lapping the side roof plates and urlins and having its middle portion spaced vertically therefrom, said intermediate roof plate extending in downwardly bent extensions beyond the carlines longitudinally of the car, and an end Wall coperating with said intermediate plate to form a protected ventilator.

In -a car construction, a side'post, a side-plate supported from said post on the outer side of the post, the post extending lrelatively above the side-plate, a carline secured to said post and having a bent down end resting on a horizontal portion of the side-plate, and a roof sheet lapping `the sidelate. p 20.
