FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18,1913.
Application filed January 7, 1913. Serial No. 740,659.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT F. ConxniL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a bed, which, while having a standard size when arranged for use, can be folded into very small compass which will admit of its being stored away in a recess, and of its being readily passed through doors of ordinary size when it is desired to move the bed from one room or apartment, to another, and which combining these improved constructions will be of simple construction, easy of manipulation and possess all required strength and rigidity, invention consists in the folding bed having the characteristics of construction and op eration substantially as hereinafter specified and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyin drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed embodying my invention shown in its folded or collapsed condition; Fig. 2 is a side view showing'it opened and arranged ready for use; Fig. 3 is a detail end view.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, I employ a supporting and movable frame 10, which is U- shaped, that is to say, it comprises a horizontal bottom bar and two vertical end bars, there being attached to the bottom bar near one end and to one side of its longitudinal cent-er, two transverse bars 11, each of which has attached to it two casters or rollers 12 upon which the desired structure may readily be rolled for shifting the same about. Pivotally connected to the upper end of each of the vertical frame bars is a bed frame 13, rectangular in form and made referably of angle bars suitably riveted or bolted together.
The pivotal connection between the upper ends of the vertical bars of the frame 10 and the bed frame 13, as shown in the drawings, is formed by two bracket arms 14:, one at each end of. the bed frame, each of which is of an inverted L-shape, and each of which and to these ends my,
at the angle or corner of the L has a laterally pro ecting flanged stud l5, and each of which at the outer end of its right angle arm has a similar stud 16, which studs of each. arm slidably engage a horizontal slot 17 in the upper end of each vertical arm of the frame 10, which slot at midlength has an upwardly extending vertical opening 18 through which the stud 15 may play when the bed frame is swung on the stud 16, this arrangement being useful in that a. shorter radius is provided for the swing of that side of the bed. which is nearer the pivot 16 so that collision with the bottom bar of the frame 10 is avoided and the vertical arms of the frame 10 can thus be shorter than would be the case if the pivotal connection were a. simple hinge one. The location of the studs 15 and 16 is such that when the bed frame is in a horizontal position for use the center of gravity is well below the point of support of the bed 10, and hence. the stability of the bed when arranged in a horizontal position for use is assured, the. bed being suspended when it is in a horizontal.position so that it is well below its points of support and will obviously oppose any tendency to swing sidewise as compared with an arrangement, for example, by which the point of pivotal support would lie below the bed.
By shifting the bed to place both studs of each suspending bracket arm out of alinement with the vertical extension of the slot, the-bed is locked or held in horizontal position even without provision of any other means to secure this result. However, I provide near the foot and the head of the bed a pair of supporting legs 19 attached to rock shafts 20 pivoted to brackets on the underside of the bed frame so that said legs may be swung from a vertical position to a position close to and substantially parallel with the side bars of the bed frame when not in use, which legs, of course, when turned to vertical position form a support for the bed. I preferably provide a bed with a head boarid, or frame 21, and a foot board, or rame 22, each of which is carried by its own rock shaft 23 journalcd parallel and close to a log carrying rock shaft, and I connect, or gear the two rock shafts together so that when the foot board and head boa rd are moved into and out of position for use the legs will simultaneously move into and out of position for use. The connection between the rock shafts may be intermeshing gear for the foot board .of the bed. Both the,
head board and the foot board have side plates 32 which may be dither open worker solid, which when the head board and foot boards are turned to position out of use extend alongside of and above the side rails of the bed to confine pillows and bedding placed within the bed, and, of course, when the bed is closed the head board and the foot board closedown upon the bedding and it 'is thereby held in place.
When the bedstead is swung to the vert-i cal position shown in Fig. 1, it is there held by a latch device consisting of two latches 33 pivoted between two cars or lugs on the bottom bar of the frame 10, which are respectively positioned to engage the foot board and the head board, and which are connected by a weighted bar 34 which normally tends to rock the latches into locking position so that automatically when the bedstead is swung into vertical position it will belatched. To free the latches a treadle 35 is provided having an end that lies under the latch bar so that upon depressing the treadle the-latches will be rocked to release the bedstead.
It will be seen that when in the closed, or compact state, a bed embodying my invention occupies very little compass so that it may be readily shifted around from place;
to place and through doorways, and is admirably fitted for storage in a recess which may be provided especially for the purpose, 1
as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, which recess has a hinged door 36, which may be shutwhen the bed is outside thereof, and in P such a case as this I attach to the vertical 5 bar of the frame 10 a door-forming panel 37 i which fits the recess when the bed is shoved g therein, which panel may be provided with a mirror, or given a configuration or design f corresponding with the wood work of the apartment. The connection between the panel when it carries a mirror, is a pivotal 5 one, consisting of a rod 38 passing through overlapping lugs or ears on the vertical end bars of the frame 10, and the back of the panel shows that the mirror may be tilted to enable it to be satisfactorily used, and on its outer side the panel, or mirror frame is provided with handles 39 by which the bed may be withdrawn from its recess. Suitsegments 24 and 25 on the respective shafts 1 Lovable able ventilating fines, of course, are provided for the recess so as to keep the bed clothing in a fresh, well aired condition.
' The recess may be lined with sheet iron or wood, and if wood is used it will preferably be cedar, because it is obnoxious or repugnant to all insects. The ventilation ma be effected by means of a box or tube outlet opening screened to exclude insects, or it may be ventilated by using the air circling between the floors and walls, although this method is not as desirable as ventilation frpm the outside.
It will be understood while metal is admy bed, I, nevertheless, do not restrict myself to any particular material, nor do I confine myself to any particular details of construction, as these may be varied without departure-from the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. The combination of a supporting frame having vertical members, a bed frame pivotally attached thereto, the pivotal connection being above the center of gravity of the bed when in a horizontal position for use, said pivotal connection comprising for each vertical member a pair of separated studs, and. a slot in the vertical member.
:2. The combination of a supporting and transporting frame having vertical members, a bed frame pivotally attached thereto, a head board pivoted to said bed frame, a foot board pivoted to said bed frame, supporting legs pivoted to the bed frame, and operative connections between the head board and one set of legs and the foot board 5 and the other set of legs.
! 3. The combination of a supporting and transporting frame having vertical members, a bed frame pivotally attached thereto, a head board pivoted to said bed frame, a foot board pivoted to said bed frame, supporting legs pivoted to the bed frame, and operative connections between the head i and the other set of legs, the head board and foot board, respectively, having side'plates situatedto engage'and confine bed clothes. in testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
