To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Annnnw S. FRANKS, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a residentof the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in looks and particularly to an improved locking structure operated by a magnet.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved lock which may be readily operated from the interior atany time and which may be operated from the exterior or outside of the door by a magnet only.
1 Another object of the invention is to provide a magnetically-operated lock with a bolt structure which may be rotated to a certain. position whereby the same may be moved back and forth freely and may be adjusted so as not to be capable of being opened except through an unlocking mech anism magnetically set in motion.
A still further object of the invention is to rovide a lock, the bolt of which is operated y a motor, as, for instance, a spring motor which is released by a magnet operating from the exterior of the door, this arrangement eliminating the use of keyholes or other arrangements associated with the means for locking and unlocking doors.
In carrying out the objects of the invention the lock may be mounted or arranged on any object or on any desired place, but it is especially designed for doors as no keyhole isused. The bolt is designed to be moved freely back and forth to a locked position and an unlocked position by an operating handle in the interior. This bolt is designed to be rotatably mounted or rather mounted so as to rock whereby one end, which is formed with a rack, may be caused to engage the teeth of a gear wheel associated with a motor. This motor is of any kind as, for instance, a springmotor which may be wound from the interior or inner face of the door. Exteriorly the bolt and the motor are not seen. A release device is provided for the motor which is designed to be swung or actuated by the action of a magin a notch which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of a door and jamb with certain parts broken away soas to illustrate more clearly an embodiment of the invention applied to the door; Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 except that the bolt has been turned to a different position; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1, approximately on the line 3-3; Fig. is a detail fragmentary sectional view, approximately on the line %Ll of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the door jamb, a section of the bolt being shown. in connection therewith; and Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary view disclosing the locking pin used in preventing the release of the spring motor.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, by numerals, 1 indicates a door and 2 the door jamb. The door jamb 2 is formed with a notch 3 having a cam face 4- against which a bolt 5 presses when the door is closed and thebolt is in a locked position. The bolt 5 is pivot-ally connected at 6 to a bar 7 so as to permit the bolt 5 to freely swing. A notch or slot 8 is formed in the jamb 2 to accommodate a catch 9 which inturn is pivotally supported by a pin 10. The catch 9 is designed to be swung out of the way, as shown in Fig. 5, when the bolt 5 is entering the notch 3 but to again swing back to its original position above the bolt 5 after the bolt has been properly arranged in the notch. This will positively prevent any one from raising the bolt.
The bolt 5 has connected therewith an operating pin 11 which carries a knob 12. When it is desired to operate the look while a person is in the house the knob 19 is grasped and the pin 11 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that it may rest l l 'hen it is desired to unlock the door from the interior the knob 12 is grasped and the pin 11 is moved along a slot 14L to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bolt may be moved freely back and forth in the slot 14 from the i11 terior, but when it is desired to go out and lock the door the pin ll is inoved to the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to be opposite a slot 15. The turning of the boltin this manner also turns the bar 7 so that the teeth of a rack 16 are caused to engage a gear wheel 17 on a spring motor 18. The spring motor 18 may be of any desired kind and provided with one or more trains of gearing 19, one of the gears of which is designed to be engaged by a stop 20 mounted on a reciprocating bar 21. The bar 21 is provided with a stop 22 which is pressed by a spring 23 so that the bar 21 will normally remain in position, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the stop 20 will engage a wheel 2%. A pin 25 or other suitable stop is arranged near the end of the reciprocating bar 21 so as to engage a pivotally mounted lever 26. The lever 26 is pivotally mounted at 27 and is formed with an enlarged end 28 at the bottom. It will be evident that the lever 26 may be made of any desired material but the end 28 must be made of magnetic material as the same acts as an armature for a magnet 29. When the teeth of the rack 16 are in engagement with the gear wheel 17, as shown in Fig. 1, and the magnet 29 is placed in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 the armature 28 will be attracted and will swing the lever 26 and move the bar 21 against the action of the spring 23 so as to move the stop 20 out of engagement with the wheel 2%. This will release the spring of the motor 18 and thereby cause the motor to move the bar 7 and withdraw the bolt 5 from the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to prevent the lever 26 from swinging when closing the door or at any other time except when unlocking the door a mag netic pin 30 is provided which is mounted in a nonmagnetic casing 31. If desired a pin 32 may be provided for the pin 30, which projects into a slot 33 whereby the pin 30 cannot move out of the casing 31. Before the door is closed the pin 30 is moved by a magnet to the position shown in Fig. 6, which is in front of the lever 26 and thereby prevents the lever 26 from swinging outwardly against the pin or stop 20 on the bar 21. The pin 30 is operated upon the exterior of the door by a permanent magnet or electric magnet, if desired, and when moved to the position shown in Fig. 6 the door cannot be unlocked, as it will be necessary to move the pin 30 back to its original position in the member 31 before the armature 28 can be attracted.
In mounting the lock in a door it will be evident that the same may be variously arranged without departing from the spirit of the invention and that numerous slight changes can be made for adapting the lock to various doors without departing from the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a lock of the class described, a reciprocating bar formed with a rack, a pivotally mounted bolt connected with said bar, an operating pin connected with said bar and designed to swing the said bar, a gear wheel meshing with said rack when swung to a predetermined position by said pin, a motor for actuating said gear wheel, and a magnetically operated member for setting in motion said motor.
2. In a lock of the class described, a reciprocating bar formed with a rack, a bolt pivotally connected to one end of said bar, means arranged on said bolt for partially rotating the same and said rack, a gear wheel meshing with said rack when the rack is turned to a predetermined position, a motor for operating said gear wheel, a stop for holding said motor against operation, and a magnetically actuated means for movin said last-mentioned means.
3. In a lock of the class described, a bolt, a bar formed with a rack connected with said bolt, a gear wheel meshing with said rack, a motor for operating said gear wheel, a stop arranged to normally prevent the op eration of said motor, a reciprocating bar carrying said stop, a pivotally mounted lever engaging said reciprocating bar, and a magnetic armature on one end of said lever adapted to be attracted by a magnet held in proximity thereto whereby said motor is released and said gear wheel is operated for withdrawing said bar.
4. In a lock of the class described, a bolt, a bar formed with a rack connected with said bolt, a gear wheel meshing with said rack, a motor for actuating said gear wheel, a stop for normally preventing the actuating of said motor, a pivotally mounted lever designed to move said stop so as to release said motor, a magnetically-operated pin de signed to be moved into the path of movement of said lever and preventing such movement and thereby locking said lever against operation, and an armature ar ranged on said lever designed to be attracted by a magnet placed adjacent thereto when said pin is withdrawn.
