Pivotally secured tothe supplemcntal bottom plate 5, as at 8, is a series of levers 9, nine in number. Each of these levers has a hen-t end 9 and carries at its inner end a headed pin 10, which pins project into slots 11 of the rotary disk 7. The headed pins are located at various distances from the pivotal points 8 of the lovers so as to vary the leverage of the levers 9, and these headed pinsor studs 10 revolve the disk 7 on the shifting of the levers 9. Each of these slots 11 is cut laterally to form a clearance space 11 and is notched, as at 11 for the reception of the stud or pin of its lever, so that when the stud at the end of the lever has rotated the disk it is, by means of this notch 11", locked in the extreme outer portion of the slot so that the disk can go no farther. Inother words, as each lever 9 is operated the stud thereof engages the inclined wall 9"' and shifts the disk 7 until the pin 10 is received in the notch 11", while the remaining pins of the levers which have not been operated by the keys remain unaffected by reason of the clearance space 11" which permits the movement of the disk 7 without affectingthe position of the pins. The clearance space of each successive lever, from 1 to 9, is longer than that of its predecessor by reason of the fact that each. successive lever has a greater movement than the preceding lever', and therefore this must be provided for by giving increased length to each succeeding slot so that the stud 10 of any lever not operated by this key will not be affected by 'n'io-verncnt of the disk.
In my prior patent referred, to the con'v nection between the disk and the levers was difi'erent from that shown in the present case, and the means for operating the levers E by the keys was likewise different, the pres- 1 ent improvement having some advantages over my former improvement. In that case the levers were operated by cams operated by or carried by the keys. In the present i case I have done away with cams entirely.
Suitable keys 12 are provided, one for at its lower end t 16, and i 'o the s i,

The rocking lever 18 is provided with a cam projection 21 having an inclined or cam formed under surface 22 adapted, when the key depressed. to engage a sliding tooth 23 which is provided with an uptinned flange 24 for engagement by the inclined surface oi the projection. llhis tooth is slidingly supported so that when pushed forward on the depression of the key as the master gear hereinafter referred to is rotated it will engage the teeth thereof and act as a detent to lock the master gear thus preventing should any one of the keys be hit hard, the flying around or further rotation more than the required number of teeth according to' the push rod that is operated. The greater the distance between the pins and the pivotal points 8 of these levers 9 the greater will be the rotary movement of the disk 7. After each push rod is shifted it is returned by the spring carried by the sleeve which guides the push rod. hen the key is released and returned by its spring to its normal position the rotary disk will be swung back into its original position by means of a spring 25 one end of which is secured to a stud 25 carried on the underside ot the disk 7 and which projects. through a slot 25" in the bottom plate while the other end is secured. to lixcd the same time the key opera-s e point- "d lovers 9 returned to their normal positions by means of springs 9" For limiting the return movement of the disk the un 25 c ioerates with the end of the slot 2 thus prevent melting lever and 7 9 master ing the rotary disk being swung back beyond its original position by the spring 25.
On top of the rotary disk 7 is the master gear 27 mounted loosely on the pin (3. Se cured to the rotary disk 7 is a spring pressed pawl 28, which is forced into the teeth of this gear bf means of a. sprin" 29, so that when the disk 7 is rotated forward in the manner hereinbefore indicated the master gear is also rotated-with it by means of the pawl 28 just referred to. Another spring pressed pawl 30 is also provided and properly positioned and pressed into engagement with the teeth of the master gear by means of a spring 31. This pawl merely rides over the teeth of the master gear when the same is turned by the pawl 28 until the gear comes to a stop, at which time the pawl 30 prevents the return movement of the gear 27 with the rotary disk 7 when the same is shifted backward by means of its spring 25, thus holding the master gear in its advanced position. the pawl 28, on the pulling backward r the rotary disk 7 by its spring 25, at this time riding over the teeth of, the gear in a manner which will be readily understood. Thus it will be observed that by means of these two pawls the master gear 27 may be advanced with the rotary disk 7 but its advanced position not atlccted by the return or backward mo ement of the rotary disk 7 through the medium of its spring 25.

The dial 4t; and its hub 48', to which it is fixed, see Fig. 14, is loosely mounted for sliding movement on a pin 40 and on the bushing 40" of the pinion 43, through which bushing the pin 40" e ods. 3n the interior of the hub 48' of the diam 4G, to whichthe Geneva device 48 is fixed, is formed or located a toothed clutch member 5O" which thus slides or moves up and down with the dial 40, see Fig. 15. Secured to the bushing 40 of the gear 4 3 is the companion clutch member comprising in the present instance a fixed pin 50 adapted to engage the teeth of the clutch member 50", such engagement being maintained by means of a spring ('30 which presses the sliding tooth formed Jeneva devices 48 and 49, and three sets of 2* clutch member- -50 into engagement with the. pain 50", so that when the two clutch memrs are in engagement the dial and its Geneva device will rotate with the pinion 43 and when out of engagement the dial 40 and its Geneva device 48 will be free for rota tion indepel 'ently of the gear 43 and also independent of the pinion 46 when the sliding clutch member is depressed in the manner hereinafter described;
The" toothed clutch member 50' is providedfwith ten teeth, as. are also the other toothed. clutch members of the other two dials. Thus the pinion 43, Geneva device 48 and dial 40 turn as one unit together when the two clutch members 50' and 50" are in engagement. The Geneva device 48, like the Geneva device 49, is a disk with one tooth cut in it, so that in one complete turn this Geneva device 48 engages only once with its gear 46. This gear 46, like the gear 47, has the lower half of every other tooth cut away so that when the Geneva device engages it it turns the gear-.46 two teeth. As pinion 43 has ten teet and its Geneva device 48 one tooth, and gear 46 has ten teeth on its upper half and is turned two teeth on each complete revolution of pinion 43, and as gear 46 meshes with gear 44, which has twenty teeth and is connected with the Geneva device 49 fixed to the hub of the dial 41 by clutch members 51 and 51 similar to those hereinbefore described in connection with dial 40, it follows that the ratio between the revolutions of dials 40 and 41 is one to ten. The same is true also of dials 41 and 42, the ratio being exactly the same, and therefore need not be further described. The ratio between the first and third dials 40 and 42 is therefore one to one hundred.
As hereinbefore stated, the clutch members of the third dial 42 are shown .n Fig. 12, in which the sliding tooth-formed member 52 is normally held in engagement with a pin 52 carried by the member 99 by means of a spring 52". Thus it will be observed that on the shifting forward of the rotary disk by the levers through the medium of the keys in the manner hereinbefore described the several dials are operated in the manner herein set forth. For returning the dials to their zero positions suitable mechanism is provided, comprising a key 61, marked 0, the key rod 61 of which is suitably supported in a tubular slotted bushing or sleeve 62 and is maintained in its normal position by a spring 63, see Fig. On depressing this push rod its stem Wlll engage a lever 64 which is pivoted as at 65 to form a bell-crank with the longer arm 64' of the lever extending through the slotted casing of the stem, so that as this bell-crank lever is rocked on its pivot its short end 64 will rock a rocking device 67 carr1ed by a stud 68, and this rocking device 67 Wlll in turn engage cam-faced member 69 pivotally supported in position to be swung in one (ll-- rection by this rocking device 67 and re turned to its normal position by a spring 70. The forward end of this member (in is provided. with. a projection 71, the top face of which is inclined, as at 2, so as to engage and raise a projection 73 carried by a rock shaft 74 suitably supported, and which rock shaft carries three clutch shifters T5, T6 and 77, one for each sliding clutch member 50', 51 and 52. These clutch shifters partly encircle grooves in the hubs of the sliding or toothed clutch members so that the same may rotate relatively to the clutch shifters, but when the projection carried by the rock shaft is raised the clutch shifters will depress the toothed clntch members against their springs and thus separate them from their respective pins 50", 51 and 5'3" hereinbefore described. The separation of the clutch members 50 and 51 from their pins also carries the Geneva devices 48 and 49 below and free of the gears 46 and 47, so that the dials may now be returned to their zero positions. The projection of the rock shaft having been raised by the member and the dials returned to their zero positions the projection is released so as to permit the toothed clutch members to return by means of their springs into position to engage the pins 50", 51 and 52".
The return of the dials to their zero positions is accomplished by means of a sliding plate 90, see Fig. 5, suitably supported on upright posts 91. This plate is provided with three projections 92, each adapted to engage a heart-shaped cam member 99 at any position in which they may be at the time it is desired to return the dials to their Zero positions. These members 99 are in the form of eccentrics, one secured to each dial hub. This plate is shifted forward on the depression of the zero marked key by means of the longer arm 64 of the bell-crank lever 64 by reason of the fact that this longer portion 64 of the lever engages one arm 93 of a bell-crank lever the opposite arm 94 of which actuates a rocking device 95,.which engages a pin 96 of the plate 90 and shifts it forward, whereupon its projections 92 engage the heart-shaped cam members, rotating them and their dials, provided of course the toothedclutch members are separated by means of the clutch shifter mechanism from the pin clutch members hereinbetore described, to the zero positions of such dials. Each of the heartshaped members is provided at its rear with a notch 97 which, as the dials are brought to their Zero positions, receive the projections 92 of the sliding plate and so hold these cam-shaped members from further movement, at which time the coiiperating tooth-formed clutch members will return into position to engage the clutch the key operated lever. In other Words, one
key will shift its lever a short distance while another key will shift its lever a comparatively great distance, and consequently the dials will be rotated according to the distance of travel of the several levers.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a pocket adding machine, the com bination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials, a master gear for controlling the movements thereof and means for rotating said gear and comprising a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and rocking devices supported in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk.
2. In a pocket adding machine, the combination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials, a master gear for controlling the movements thereof and means for rotating said gear and comprising a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and rocking devices supported in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organization being such that each lever will be shifted a distance different from all of its companion levers.
3. In a pocket adding machine, the combination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials, a master gear for controlling the movements thereof and means for rotating said gear and comprising a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connect I levers, a series of keys corresponding 1.1 number with the number of levers, rocking devices supported in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk and a detent actuated by each-of the keys for engaging said master gear.
4. In a pocket adding machine, the combination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials, a master gear for controlling the movements thereof and means for rotating said gear and comprising a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers, rocking devices supported in'position to be operated by thc'keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk and a detent actuated by each of the keys for engaging said master gear, the organization being such that each lever will be shifted a distance different from all of its companion levers.
5. In a pocket adding machine, the combination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers cooperating with said disk, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and rocking devices in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk.
6. In a. pocket adding machine, the combination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers cooperating with said disk, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and rocking devices in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers therel'iy to rotate the disk, the organization being. such that each key will shift its lever a distance different from that of its companion keys.
7. In a pocket adding machine, the com bination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers cooperating with said disk, a series of keys corresponding in number With'the number of levers and pivotally supported devices in position to be operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotaic the disk, the organization being such that each key will shift its lever a distance different from that of its companion keys, and springs for holding said levers in engagement with said pivotally supported devices and for returning said levers to their normal positions.
8. In a pocket adding machine, the 001m bination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers cooperating with said disk, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers, springs for returning said keys to their normal positions, and pivdtally supported devices in position to be operated by the keys for shiftingsaid levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organization being such that each key will shift its lever a distance. different from that of its companion keys.

In a pocket adding machine, the com bination of adding mechanism including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and means operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organization being such that each key will shift its lever a distance ditl'erent from that of its companion keys, said disk and levers having one pins and "the other slots for the reception oi said pins, said slots extending laterally relatively to the disk.
10. In a pocket adding machine, the com bination of adding, mechanism including a plurality of dials and. means for controlling the movements thereof and including a 1'0- tary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number oi levers and means operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organination bein such that each key will shiftits lever a distance different from that of its companion keys, said disk and levers having one pins and the other slots for the reception of said pins, said slots extending laterally relatively to the disk and having at one part notches for the reception of said pins.
11. In a pocket addin machine, the combination of adding mec anisrn including a plurality of dials and means for controlling the movements thereof and including a rotary disk, a series of pivotally connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in number with the number of levers and means operated by the keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organization being such that each :ey will shift its lever a distance different from that of its companion keys, said disk and levers having one pins and the other slots for the reception of said pins, said slots extending laterally relatively to the disk and having at one part notches for the reception of said pins and each succeeding slot l wing greater length than the preceding slot.
13. In a pocket adding m hine, the combination of adding mechan l including a plurality of dials and means tor controlling the movements thereof and including a 1'0 tary disk, a series of pivot-alt connected levers, a series of keys corresponding in numher with the number of levers and means operated by the ,keys for shifting said levers thereby to rotate the disk, the organization being such that each key will shift its lever a distance diil'crent from that of its companion keys, said levers havin disk having laterally extending slots each of greater length than its preceding slot and also having a notch for the reception of said pins.
